  • Site in a wildlife centre in the Forest of Bowland’s Ribble Valley
  • Just under 10 minutes’ drive from Chipping and 40 from Preston
  • Petting zoo, play area, café and pond; marked walking trails on site
For a family escape with an educational twist consider a stay at Bowland Escapes, in the middle of a wildlife centre that aims to get kids up to speed on conservation and animal welfare. This place – part of the Bowland Wild Boar Park – is topnotch for groups with younger members keen on cuddling creatures like lambs and baby chicks, or seeing more exotic breeds such as white wallabies, emus and water buffaloes… and wild boar, of course. Other activities with a farmyard focus available at this spot in the Forest of Bowland Area of Natural Beauty include tractor and trailer rides (in the school holidays and on weekends) as well as wildlife walks inside the lush green Ribble Valley with fells and woodland all around. Named paths aimed at kids and adults alike range from the Cartoon and Totem Pole trails to the Bluebell Walk. A play area is also on site. (Please note the Bowland Wild Boar Park is only open to visitors during the school holidays and bank holidays from February to October; check opening times before booking your stay to see if you'll be able to visit the animals or not.) If you’d rather sit and watch the wildlife, a café is opposite the pond at the park where birds fly in to take titbits from the feeder; for other ways to spy winged critters in their natural habitat, you could also wander beside the nearby Hodder river. After lunch at the café, spark up the barbecue for dinner – local produce is plentiful at the nearby farm shop. Another café plus a couple of pubs are in Chipping just over five minutes’ drive away if you’d prefer to spend less time cooking and more time spreading out next to the firepit back on base after a meal made by someone else. Bowland Escapes has shower and toilet blocks and washing-up stations with hot water.

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its beautiful surroundings, friendly and helpful staff, and excellent, clean facilities, particularly the shower blocks. The adjacent Wild Boar Park is a highlight for families. Some guests found the camping field a bit small or uneven, and a few mentioned issues with toilet handles or the availability of basic supplies. The site's peaceful atmosphere and natural setting are consistently appreciated.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful, quiet, remote, off grid setting. Reception very helpful. Spotlessly clean

Disliked Only 2 combined shower/toilets for the camping field. Not able to drive onto the camping field to unload/load equipment. Luckily weather was dry.

Liked Loved the camp site, toilets were clean, shower was clean- friendly staff & easy to get there.
Fire pit was a huge success & great added extra.

Disliked The play area was brilliant but the wood was falling apart & very rickety. Some of the slats fell off whilst kids were playing.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We’ve just had our first 2 night stay and we absolutely loved it! The pitch sizes were great, the toilet/shower facilities were immaculate and the staff were so friendly and accommodating. Wild Boar park was a minutes walk away and my boys (3 and 4) absolutely loved it! There was a smaller park on the camp site also, as well as little woodland walks, which kept them well entertained throughout the weekend. We will definitely be returning soon!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful site with huge grounds where you can walk in the woods.
Bathrooms spotless.
Camping field only allows five tents so there is lots of space and never had to queue for bathrooms.
Cars parked away from tents but close by for loading/unloading easily.
Staff/owners were so friendly and helpful.
Free access to Boar Park which is a short walk away through the site. We had lots of fun feeding the animals. Owners seem to really care about their animals.
Other animals on site when you do walking trails like emus and ponies.
Felt very safe.

Disliked Only slight negative to site - which is not their fault - is that there isn’t much else around off site.

Camping pod

Liked Pods were simple but perfect! Great firepit to cook on, laid out so it felt private and direct access to the wood for a walk. Shower block was the most clean and warm that we've ever experienced on a campsite! We also had free access to the Boar park which is great for families.

Disliked A few more hooks or a shelf in the pods would of been useful, but I'm searching for a dislike to fill the box!!!!

Liked We are new to camping and thought we would try one night here to test it out. We have had the BEST time and we are booking for next month and bringing our son with us as we already know that he will love it. The toilet/ shower room was pristine! Thank you for being so helpful when booking and once there a lovely lady booked us in

Local attractions

There may be much to keep you at this wildlife park but family-friendly activities are all around the region too, with the rare breeds of cattle at Cobble Hey Farm & Gardens 25 minutes’ drive away and the rainy-day workshops and events at Barton Grange Garden Centre within half an hour. If it’s sunny, Brock Bottoms Picnic Site (25 minutes) is an excellent spot for an outdoor meal – followed up with an ice cream made courtesy of the milk from the dairy cows at Mrs Dowsons Farm half an hour away. Famous places for the kids are also within an hour’s drive, like the rides at the Blackpool seaside; for grownups, the fell walks of the Lake District are the same distance away.
