  • Small, quiet Lancashire campsite in the north of the Forest of Bowland
  • Lancaster and Morecambe both 20 minutes' drive away
  • Part of a 180-acre farm with retired racehorses living on site
Where do racehorses go when they retire from competition? Well, some of the lucky ones end up here at Whinney Hill Farm, in Lancashire’s Lune Valley and surrounded by the fabulous scenery of the Forest of Bowland National Landscape. And now you can join them too, for a relaxing break in this lovely rural location. This 180-acre site is home to The British Thoroughbred Retraining Centre, a charity that cares for and rehomes retired racehorses. You’ll probably spot some of the residents (currently numbering around 30) as you pass through the site, but there’s also the chance to meet them properly on a visit while you’re here (you’ll just need to organise this in advance by contacting the site owners once you’ve booked your stay). Whether you’re into horses or not, this farm makes a great base for days spent exploring the Forest of Bowland – and that’s not the only natural area you’ll have at hand, because both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks are within a half-hour drive too. And you can also plan seaside days too, because the coast is only about 20 minutes’ drive away… This farm site has something of a wild camping vibe – it’s got no electricity, but guests do have access to a washing-up area (fittingly in a converted horse trailer), two compost toilets and two gas-powered showers. There’s also a communal firepit area where you can keep warm by night while looking up into the starry skies.

What customers say

This quiet and spacious campsite offers beautiful views and abundant wildlife. Facilities including hot showers and clean toilets are well-maintained. Guests appreciate the helpful staff, the availability of trolleys for transporting gear, and the peaceful atmosphere. While most found composting toilets acceptable and clean, a few guests preferred traditional facilities or noted a lack of handwashing stations. The no-car policy was challenging for some due to gear transport.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Very spacious and quiet campsite. 2 other tents on our second day and you could barely see them with them being so spread out. We had the site to ourselves one night and it didn't feel any different the next when others were there. There's 2 metal carts for moving your gear from the unloading bay at the entrance so it's easy even when you've brought a ridiculous amount of stuff like we had. Showers were hot and toilets clean, they never any queue for them. The brief interactions we had with staff they were lovely.

Highlight was definitely watching the Barn Swallows out most of the day flying low to the ground across the top of the campsite.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely quiet site. Pitching was easy, bottled water provided. Only 4 tents whilst we stayed and everyone pitched well apart. Loved spotting the deer, and the woodpeckers and robins flying past the tent.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Gorgeous spot, we loved being able to walk near the horses, the composting toilets were the best I've ever experienced and very clean, same for the hot showers.
Very chilled site and it felt like everything had been thought of: trolleys for moving kit from the carpark, clear instructions to find the site, easy access to bottled water.
We loved our stay and will definitely be back! Thank you for having us.
