  • On a working farm between the Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales
  • Close to the Pennine Way; 20 minutes' drive to Skipton
  • Three pubs within walking distance; easy access from the M65
Planning a walk or few as part of your break? Maybe in the Yorkshire Dales or the Forest of Bowland… or on the Pennine Way… and not forgetting other top spots like Pendle Hill and Gisburn Forest… If you reckon that sounds like a pretty enticing collection of places to explore, the place to stay is Shay Gate Farm, just outside Laneshawbridge on the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire. This well-placed spot is about half an hour’s drive from the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland, five minutes from the Pennine Way and within easy reach of several other excellent walking/biking areas. Getting in, out and all around should be pretty easy too – Colne is about two and a half miles away, and the M65 about four miles. The setup on site is a family-friendly one, with lots of space for the kids to run about and burn off energy. Facilities include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a communal fridge, and you’re allowed to bring along a barbecue to cook your meals if you like (it’s a 20-minute drive to Skipton’s market to stock up on local produce for the grill). There are, however, three country pubs within walking distance if you’d rather someone else cooked you a meal.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely people, great views. Grass was all well kept and fresh. We got there slightly early and was greeted by a kind man who told us just where to set up.

Disliked The toilets did not always have soap, nor were they very clean. However there was 5/6 toilets which is a bonus.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely site, great location close to pubs and plenty of walking. Loved the map with directions for pubs.Facilities basic but perfect for 1 or 2 nights, we didn’t need the fridge/freezers but definitely a good addition to extend the stay. Some of the site is on a slope but there were plenty of spaces on flat areas on a Saturday afternoon. Would definitely return!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Good clean site, with great views. Close enough to local pubs. And even though it was the weekend of the England match. Was still quiet enough for those that were there for a relaxing weekend.

Disliked When I arrived I was just under 25 minutes early. As I was the only one on the site at this time I asked if I could just park up till 2 o'clock and then set my tent up. I was informed that there was a pub down the road if I wanted to wait. The charge for setting up a few minutes was £5. As it was during the heat wave and I had been driving for 3 hours I paid the money, just so I could get out of the car.

Local attractions

Where to take your walking boots first? Local strolls might take you out onto the Pendle Way (which you can access via a network of footpaths leading from the farm), to pick up the Pennine Way (five minutes’ drive) or to take in different rural views from the ‘Atom’ artwork in Wycoller Country Park (10 minutes). Not worn your legs out yet? Great - there’s plenty more to explore. Perhaps a climb of mystical Pendle Hill, a woodland walk in the Forest of Bowland or an outing to the Yorkshire Dales National Park? All are about half an hour away by car. Should you reach a point at which you need a sit down, a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (25 minutes’ drive) is a good option, as it means you’ll still be able to survey the scenery at a more leisurely pace. A stroll around Skipton (20 minutes) might also be on the cards, taking in the priory and castle as you go.
