Planning a walk or few as part of your break? Maybe in the Yorkshire Dales or the Forest of Bowland… or on the Pennine Way… and not forgetting other top spots like Pendle Hill and Gisburn Forest… If you reckon that sounds like a pretty enticing collection of places to explore, the place to stay is Shay Gate Farm, just outside Laneshawbridge on the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire. This well-placed spot is about half an hour’s drive from the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland, five minutes from the Pennine Way and within easy reach of several other excellent walking/biking areas. Getting in, out and all around should be pretty easy too – Colne is about two and a half miles away, and the M65 about four miles. The setup on site is a family-friendly one, with lots of space for the kids to run about and burn off energy. Facilities include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a communal fridge, and you’re allowed to bring along a barbecue to cook your meals if you like (it’s a 20-minute drive to Skipton’s market to stock up on local produce for the grill). There are, however, three country pubs within walking distance if you’d rather someone else cooked you a meal.

Prachtig uitzicht en veel ruimte, met vriendelijk personeel. De faciliteiten, waaronder douches in paardentrailers, zijn goed. Kampvuren zijn toegestaan. Rustig, hoewel soms geluid van grote groepen. Deels op een helling. Goede prijs en relaxte sfeer.

Ik was blij met The view was amazing. The fact we could camp anywhere ( we were with friends) the pizza and ice cream van that came was Great. Loads of loos ( mostly porta loo)

Ik was niet blij met The showers were a bit open Aired . I felt a bit exposed and the pitches were flat

Ik was blij met Great location. Beautiful views. Campsite was clean and tidy. Showers were quirky and unique being in cattle trailers. Enough space to pitch up without feeling like you were encroaching on anyone else’s privacy. As we were there on a bank holiday there were pizza and ice cream van each night (not sure if this is usual) and the pizzas were lovely and cheap enough. Also. Lots of portaloos were dotted across the site so no one had to walk far for a toilet. (Again not sure if this is the norm or whether this is due to bank holiday). Loved our stay here. Would happily go again.

Ik was niet blij met Only issue we had (which wasn’t the campsites fault) was people letting their kids play out at 6.30am running round tents shouting. But it’s kids being kids and no harm done.

Also. Just as a warning. As a tall guy the showers aren’t super big so be prepared to have to crane ur neck to get showered. But again. Tall people problems and not a campsite issue.

Ik was blij met Wonderful campsite with beautiful scenery. It’s great to have hot water for washing and showers. Having more toilets would be much appreciated.

Ik was blij met Great - lots of space to choose in 3 fields (mostly flat). 4 toilets kept nice and clean. Great showers. Livy member of staff greeting on arrival. Peaceful site even though it was summer holidays. Was great camping next to the cows!

Ik was blij met Very welcoming and friendly staff, absolutely gorgeous views and clean and tidy facilities. During our stay there was a pizza maker on site for two of the days as well as an ice cream van that did the rounds too which was a nice bonus! There was a wide range of campers staying at the site, from car campers, roof top tents, vans, motorhomes and ground tents, so it’s a site suitable for everyone! Lots of farmyard animals in the neighbouring fields, so you can go and give the cows a stroke and on an evening we could sit and watch the young cows in a field on a hill opposite running around which was very entertaining :)

Ik was niet blij met We managed to get a flat pitch but a lot of the site is on a hill, which might be a problem for some. There are only four toilets so during busy parts of the day there was a queue to use them, however they were cleaned numerous times a day by the owner.

Where to take your walking boots first? Local strolls might take you out onto the Pendle Way (which you can access via a network of footpaths leading from the farm), to pick up the Pennine Way (five minutes’ drive) or to take in different rural views from the ‘Atom’ artwork in Wycoller Country Park (10 minutes). Not worn your legs out yet? Great - there’s plenty more to explore. Perhaps a climb of mystical Pendle Hill, a woodland walk in the Forest of Bowland or an outing to the Yorkshire Dales National Park? All are about half an hour away by car. Should you reach a point at which you need a sit down, a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (25 minutes’ drive) is a good option, as it means you’ll still be able to survey the scenery at a more leisurely pace. A stroll around Skipton (20 minutes) might also be on the cards, taking in the priory and castle as you go.
