General

  • Peaceful site in 11 acres of a working pine and deciduous woodland
  • Surrounded by walking trails and a 40-minute bus ride from Manchester
  • Pub, café, takeaway and shop within a 10-minute walk

Would you dearly love to spend some time in the woods? If you would, take a look at Lancashire’s Dearden Wood, a 10-minute walk from the little village of Edenfield and a 20-minute drive north of Bury.

Guests here (four-legged ones welcome too) can start their rural rambles with explores of the 11 acres of mature pine and deciduous woodland around the site, then set their sights a little further afield on the footpaths and cycleways through the surrounds or from nearby Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall (both of which also have a fine collection of places for post-hike pints and food).

If you'd rather stagger back to site for sustenance, there’s plenty of space for a barbie, and a washing-up area to get your kit clean afterwards. Edenfield’s a good source of eats too: fuel up for the day with a cooked breakfast or croissant from the café or bakery, pick up a takeaway or settle in for a cosy evening in the pub.

Fingers crossed, such peaceful surrounds lead to deep slumbers – with that end in mind, the owners have kept facilities to the basics, simply installing a couple of toilets and a shower rather than kitting the place out with unnecessary distractions.

We camp a lot and we have to say this is defiantly a front runner for the best campsite we have stayed at. The fire wood sold by the owner is excellent value for money and it was also lovely that the owner got our fire going for us as we returned from our evening walk. Nice little touches around site like to hand made benches & provided hot water bottles (we stayed in October).

    - Nice owners
    - Pitches held up well to say it rained heavily
    - Location is great for walkers
    - Nice facilities
    - Local pub had good food and was pet friendly

We will be back multiple times next year.

Exceptional site with basic facilities and exemplary wardens22/10/2019

I stayed here with my 2 sons for one night in October and they absolutely loved it - even though the temperature fell to 5 degrees in the early morning. The warden provided wood chips to dry out the forest pitch and a number of items we did not bring - extra groundsheet, chairs & marshmallows for the fire-pit. The site is run for the benefit of the scouts and guides and is exceptionally well and expertly maintained and as you would expect my kids were safe and confident on the site throughout.

There are plenty of footpaths in the area for walks and the scenery is beautiful but not too difficult for younger children to get some exercise and fresh air as well. There are rivers and streams, rolling hills, mill ruins and sheep very close by.

The site is professionally maintained with a strong ecological ethic in harmony with the surrounding forest. It is also only a shortish walk (a mile or so) to Edenfield/Ramsbottom where you can pick up provisions or find a pub or cafe for some well deserved rest.

We were dropped off by my dad and could easily have spent a long weekend there without needing a car!

We would certainly have stayed for another night had circumstances permitted it and will be going back here regularly.

Our first stay at Dearden Wood but it won't be our last. Joe and I had a great time. Karen and Mark are fantastic hosts and the site is well laid out with great facilities including a kettle and toaster which was most welcome in the morning. Mark got our fire roaring away and was good enough to show us round the site the next morning after we had a sunrise walk through the woods. Looking forward to returning soon!

Hi Guys.
Really glad you enjoyed your stay. The rain has been terrible this last few months but you seemed to just get a gap in the weather. I think our plans for all weather camping bays was a wise one.
Look forward to seeing you both again.
Best wishes.

Lovely small site, marked out level bays in a quiet location.
Kitchen appliances provided in the communal area so no need to bring a kettle etc.
Really personable staff who go out their way to assist.

    Disliked:

The road leading to the site in a single track with potholes, doesn’t distract from the site itself, just something to be aware of if you’re in a very lowered or very wide vehicle.

Hi
Thanks for the review and love the VW.
We hope that Lancashire highways department will sort out the lane soon which will make the journey to us a little smoother.
PS. The van was extremely low though!!!!!!!!!

The lane to the camp site was narrow.

From the manager...

Hi Pauline.
Many thanks for your review.
One of the reasons why we can remain quiet and environmental is due to our relative remote location. The narrow lane reduces the amount of unwanted traffic to the site which we see as a benefit to the site and our guests enjoyment. We hope to have some repairs done to the surface by the local authority in the near future that will make access a little less bumpy.
Hope to see you again some time.
Regards.

My besty and I were camping in the grounds here and the grounds are stunning. As a blind camper my stay here was very easy. The friendliness of the manager of the site was outstanding to say the least. He could not do enough to help or advise what was locally around us. The campsite it’s self was quiet and relaxing . We would highly recommend this lovely place for everyone.

Local attractions

Walks in these surrounds are fab, but they're not the only way to get out and about. Those who like to take it all in on two wheels may like to mount their mountain bikes for the short (but steep) ride to Rossendale Moor to get their kicks on the quarry trails. Rossendale (10 minutes' drive) is also the place for climbing walls, laser tag and a roller rink at the Adrenaline Centre.

Something a little less hair raising? Take it easy on the East Lancashire Railway, which rides through Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall (both 10 minutes' drive) as it puffs its way around the Irwell Valley. Check out their schedule for details of special journeys including ale rail, dino-themed days, photography courses and the like. More of an appetite for all things that move? Take in buses, trams and a vintage fire engine at Bury Transport Museum (20 minutes) – as a bonus, it's completely free to visit.

If you need a reminder of urban life, flag down a bus in the village for the 40-minute journey to Manchester’s museums, shops and theatres. Rather stick to the rural stuff, ta? Meet the menagerie at Cronkshaw Fold Farm (15 minutes' drive) or Animal Quackers (20 minutes), or saddle up for a day out on horseback from the riding centre in Holcombe (15 minutes).
