  • Nights under canvas at a peaceful bell tent site by the river Eden
  • A 30-minute drive to the Lake District; 35 minutes to Hadrian’s Wall
  • Wood, kindling and charcoal available for barbecues and firepits
Find your flow beside the handsome river Eden… half an hour’s drive away from the Lake District National Park and 35 minutes from Hadrian’s Wall, Riverview Retreats really lives up to its name: it has the river flowing through it, and it's a proper back-to-nature retreat on the remote, family-run Cottage Farm. And for your new roost? Well, that’ll be nights under canvas in a peaceful bell tent. Before you clock in for the night though, you might want to bid a proper goodbye to the daylight in the outside area. There’s a picnic bench and large awning for shelter here – and the centre of attention is a firepit to light up the evening. The site sells wood, kindling and charcoal for barbecues should you need the supplies. Things are spacious inside the five-metre bell tents – each one has a kingsize airbed, two single airbeds and an airbed for children aged between one and three (just specify if you have little teammates when you book). For an added cost, these can be fully made up with sheets, pillows, duvets and hot water bottles… all the homely feels. You’ll have access to a composting toilet and gas-powered shower on site so you can freshen up ready for walks along the river or perhaps a jaunt to one of the local villages. Wetheral (10 minutes’ drive) and Armathwaite (15 minutes) both have a train station, pubs and a shop.

Local attractions

When you fancy a quick potter down to somewhere nice, Oak Tree Animals' Charity (35 minutes’ walk) is just the place close by. There’s a woodland and play area for kids to do what kids do, with cake and tea available in the tearoom for afterwards. Of course, with the Lake District National Park half an hour’s drive away, day trips to lakes, waterfalls and mountains might be on your radar already. Perhaps you’ll want to zoom down to Aira Force Waterfall (40 minutes' drive) or to Ullswater (40 minutes) for sailing, kayak tours or the canoe trail. Mountains are ready for hiking here, from Helvellyn’s (50 minutes) scenic Striding Edge walk to the steep ascents up Skiddaw (an hour) and the Jenkin Hill Path on this mountain, once used by Victorians and their ponies. Hadrian's Wall (35 minutes) dates back much further, as this 73-mile coast-to-coast wall was built by the Romans. Housesteads Fort (40 minutes), just one of the remaining turrets and towns along the way, has Roman barrack blocks and a hospital to seek out. You may also like to check out Lowther Castle & Gardens (40 minutes), medieval ruins that now have gardens, an adventure playground and bicycle hire.
