Crake Valley Holiday Park: Bell tent bunting

General

  • Quiet family park in 16 acres of woods next to Coniston Water
  • A 15-minute drive from Ulverston and 20 minutes from Windermere
  • Stunning views on site and great walks in the surrounding area

Cumbria, Coniston Water – and Crake Valley Holiday Park. As Lake District locations go, this is a particularly lovely one: in 16 acres of woodland on the shores of Coniston Water and around a 10-minute drive from Coniston village centre.

As you might imagine, there are great views out over the water from this dog-friendly park – and up to the surrounding mountains and fells too, for good measure. Walks, sailing and watersports are all nearby for active types, and there are lake cruises, historic places to visit and family attractions easily accessible too.

For a change of scenery, you could travel to Ulverston (15 minutes’ drive) for a market town on the beginning of the 70-mile-long Cumbria Way or trade lake views for seaside ones at the coast, half an hour away.

While the scenery and location is obviously high up there, this isn’t a site that just relies on its location: the facilities are equally excellent, with free wifi, a laundry room and a modern toilet/shower unit with individual toilet and shower units, everything you’ll need to keep yourself feeling fresh and ready to get going onto your next adventure, whatever that may be.

Quiet space with one other Bell tent and a family with 2 of their own tents. Bed was comfy, nice chair and table to sit in and actually plenty of space inside. Big beanbag was a nice touch. Firepit is a must and the owners kept us topped up with a plentiful supply of firewood (£6 per bag). Toilet block was clean with plenty of cleaning products etc and washing up area had good hot water.

Great place with lots to do near by. We stayed in one of the bell tents for two nights- very clean and well presented with all sorts of necessities available such as fire pit & bbq, picnic bench, fresh bedding, etc. There were two toilet/shower rooms available- super clean and warm.
Highly recommending this place if you are looking for a quite glamping/ camping spot near the lakes.

It was a lovely site. Bed and towels were very clean. We had a very comfy stay with our two handful Vizslas. Toilets and showers were clean and plenty of good quality toilet paper and cleaning products were provided. Owners Karina & Mathew were very friendly and made us feel very welcomed. We even met their handsome Vizsla boy briefly. :)

We highly recommend this site to everyone.

The facilities were really good quality and only used by a few guests so always available.

There was a fire pit per pitch which meant we could have a fire any night of our stay we wanted (logs and kindling available to purchase on site).

The campsite had great proximity to both Coniston Water and Windermere which was perfect for what we wanted to do. The owners recommended driving to Lakeside (Windermere) and catching the ferry to Bowness which was something we hadn't thought of but really enjoyed! Parking was £4 for the day at Lakeside and then the ferry was £15 per adult for the return journey.

Just a short walk behind the site (about 10 minutes) takes you up to an amazing Viewpoint over Coniston Water - highly recommend doing this with a beer in tow, but take warm clothes as it gets windy!

    Disliked:

The ground was a little rocky so it was quite difficult to get the tent pegs into the ground - we'd recommend bringing a mallet!

Stayed on one of the two tent pitches, lovely little site with plenty of space for a family tent. Ground was hard and a little uneven, but this was expected as you are literally on a fell side, we brought heavy duty tent pegs and some air beds and didn't have a problem. There is an option to purchase a box of kindling and logs for the fire pits provided which was great.
Toilet block consisted of two lockable wet rooms/toilet which were well stocked with loo roll and cleaning products which was great.
Brilliant little campsite if you want somewhere away from the big sites, with a wild camping feel.

    Toilets very clean.
    Showers nice and hot.
    Very scenic surroundings.
Very small campsite so nice and quiet.
Delicious cakes from pantry (honesty box).
Text communication very quick to address a question I had.

    Disliked:

WiFi slightly sporadic by the tent pitches- more of an observation rather than an issue.

Not the flattest of pitches, but fine with a decent airbed.

Location. A male member of staff was really helpful and helped us pitch. 5/5 for him. The lodges look amazing.

    Disliked:

Site is supposed to be quiet but there was quite a lot of noise from one lodge. There is also a constant hum from hot tubs all night which spoil the surroundings.
You can get pop and sweet treats there but if you want milk I was told you had to drive to coniston. Luckily a kind female staff member gave us some milk.
The toilets for tents are modern and cleaned, but were very dirty for the first 24 hrs and I cleaned them myself. The children wouldn’t shower because there is a really disgusting smell that is constantly in and around the facilities. I’m presuming it’s a digester or something but it’s really nasty. There was also a fire pit emptied out on the grass with gas canisters left on top and an over spilling bin which was unsightly.
We had to leave a day early because a couple and a young child pitched next to us and the man wouldn’t stop swearing loudly…..f-ing and jeffing constantly. The site is tiny so there was no other option than to up and leave. It’s not the sites fault but there’s no real presence there to deal with problems.

Local attractions

To stick to the ground or to go up into the treetops? You’ll be pulled in both directions in Grizedale Forest (half an hour's drive), thanks to its sculpture trail and the Go Ape obstacle trails in the trees. This is just one of the local areas rich in nature, as the mountain hike up the Old Man of Coniston (15 minutes) is a real beauty spot.

Lake District locations go almost hand-in-hand with water activities and none more so than Windermere (20 minutes), where there’s bike or boat hire, canoeing and kayaking or waterskiing and wakeboarding classes.

But while The Dock Museum (half an hour) is one way to learn about the water, it’s not all about that. There’s also a Buddhist temple at Conishead Priory (20 minutes), the Lakeland Motor Museum (15 minutes) and the National Trust Hill Top with Beatrix Potter’s house (25 minutes).

William Wordsworth has made Grasmere (40 minutes) a particularly interesting village for literary fans, while those of you searching for some more history will find that in the fortresses of Wray Castle (half an hour) and Muncaster Castle (40 minutes).

Must see

  • Lakeland Motor Museum (5.1 miles)
