Crake Valley Holiday Park: Site Yurt

General

  • Quiet family park in 16 acres of woods next to Coniston Water
  • A 15-minute drive from Ulverston and 20 minutes from Windermere
  • Stunning views on site and great walks in the surrounding area

Cumbria, Coniston Water – and Crake Valley Holiday Park. As Lake District locations go, this is a particularly lovely one: in 16 acres of woodland on the shores of Coniston Water and around a 10-minute drive from Coniston village centre.

As you might imagine, there are great views out over the water from this dog-friendly park – and up to the surrounding mountains and fells too, for good measure. Walks, sailing and watersports are all nearby for active types, and there are lake cruises, historic places to visit and family attractions easily accessible too.

For a change of scenery, you could travel to Ulverston (15 minutes’ drive) for a market town on the beginning of the 70-mile-long Cumbria Way or trade lake views for seaside ones at the coast, half an hour away.

While the scenery and location is obviously high up there, this isn’t a site that just relies on its location: the facilities are equally excellent, with free wifi, a laundry room and a modern toilet/shower unit with individual toilet and shower units, everything you’ll need to keep yourself feeling fresh and ready to get going onto your next adventure, whatever that may be.

The location was excellent for hikes with the dog. We only had one full day here, but could easily have stayed longer. We didn't have to move the car once during our stay, walked up Beacon Fell, to Coniston water and enjoyed some time by the firepit. There is just 2 spaces for tents, so doesn't get crowded which we like. Bathrooms were very nice and clean.

    Disliked:

The tent area is really undulating but we were lucky to get first choice so got the flattest part of the campsite. The pitches are also pretty muddy even when it's dry, so packing the tent got pretty messy. Wish there was electricity at the pitches as we would struggle to keep food fresh in our coolbox for more than 24 hrs.

I would definitely recommend Crake Valley Campsite to anyone who loves camping and who loves nature. We stayed in the self pitched tents of which there were only two. This made it feel a lot more quiet and personal compared to most field campsites. The honesty hut was well stocked with drinks, handmade goods and jams. This was the cheapest campsite that we found in the area so we weren't expecting much, however all the facilities were clean and there was hot water and an area for washing up. We were very pleasantly surprised!!!

Lovely warm double bed, good size bell tent, tents in nice location off the main site in the woods, covered eating area for when it rains, clean & modern toilets / washing up facilities, good location just off the main road and walking distance to the lake.
Tent nicely presented with lovely insulated flooring and patterned mats. I loved the decorative lighting and bunting too.
Kids enjoyed the fire pit and toasting marshmallows. Nice to be in the woods.

    Disliked:

It’s not really a campsite it’s a holiday park full of wooden lodges with a camping area on the edge.

Was not possible to fill our water container as it did not fit into the sink, there was not a tap I could put the water container under - most camp sites have a tap you can use to fill up water containers... it didn’t really matter as I could put the kettle under the tap in the loo or washing up area but it just meant walking to and from the toilets regularly.

I was not aware that this was on a large site full of wooden lodges - not that it impacted our stay - it’s just not the kind of place we’d usually go to. There was not anywhere to put food waste near the washing up area and it is a long walk down to the main entrance to put rubbish in the large bins.

Also beware there are no single beds or mats for the kids just a double bed and bedding for the adults. Luckily I brought the kids bedding and we had a mat in the van.
We didn’t meet any of the staff but we had a text message saying welcome.

Local attractions

To stick to the ground or to go up into the treetops? You’ll be pulled in both directions in Grizedale Forest (half an hour's drive), thanks to its sculpture trail and the Go Ape obstacle trails in the trees. This is just one of the local areas rich in nature, as the mountain hike up the Old Man of Coniston (15 minutes) is a real beauty spot.

Lake District locations go almost hand-in-hand with water activities and none more so than Windermere (20 minutes), where there’s bike or boat hire, canoeing and kayaking or waterskiing and wakeboarding classes.

But while The Dock Museum (half an hour) is one way to learn about the water, it’s not all about that. There’s also a Buddhist temple at Conishead Priory (20 minutes), the Lakeland Motor Museum (15 minutes) and the National Trust Hill Top with Beatrix Potter’s house (25 minutes).

William Wordsworth has made Grasmere (40 minutes) a particularly interesting village for literary fans, while those of you searching for some more history will find that in the fortresses of Wray Castle (half an hour) and Muncaster Castle (40 minutes).

Must see

  • Lakeland Motor Museum (8.3 kilometres)
  • Windermere Lake Cruises, Lakeside (9.4 kilometres)
  • Hill Top (10.1 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Gondola' (7.4 kilometres)
