  • Lake District working farm two miles from Thirlmere
  • A 10-minute drive to Derwentwater, Keswick and Grasmere
  • Adult-only dog-friendly site; 20 minutes' walk to the local pub
Want to wake up, lace up your boots and head off on a hearty hike straight from your pitch? Stay at Stybeck Farm near Keswick in the Lake District – pitches here are on a busy working farm where the fields give way to fells, crags and lakes. About 10 minutes’ drive from Keswick and Grasmere, the farm is less than two miles from Thirlmere, with Helvellyn rising above and Blencathra and Skiddaw about seven miles away. Base yourself here and large parts of the Lake District National Park can become your playground. A 10-minute jaunt in the car brings you to Derwentwater, an excellent launching place for boat trips. In 20 minutes you can drive to Ullswater, and Windemere is half an hour’s drive. If you fancy leaving your car behind, there’s a handy bus stop at the bottom of the lane. The family run a small farm shop on site selling their own vegetables and eggs. If you need to pick up more in the way of supplies, or go out to eat, head into Keswick and Grasmere. A closer option for filling up on food is the local pub, 20 minutes’ walk away. If you fancy kicking back and just enjoying your surroundings, there’s nearly always some animal antics to see – from feeding the inquisitive chickens to watching the sheep shearing or saying hi to the goats, donkeys and cows out in the fields.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Very nice hosts. Direct access to walks (although strenuous ascent to Sticks Pass). Beautiful surroundings.
The services are basic and the shower costs 1£ extra, but was worth it.
Farm eggs and homemade marmelade for sale.
30 metres from a hotel with a café.
Expect a working farm: noises and smell of animals, dogs and chicken running around, people starting work very early in the morning.

Disliked: The road from Kelswick to Ambleside is about 200 metres away, there will be car noise.
Book direct, it's cheeper.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Loved the peace and quiet without the loud groups/ball games etc that you find on some of the bigger sites. The hosts were very friendly and although the facilities were basic they were clean and perfectly adequate for a small site.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Small, welcoming farm site with well spaced pitches for camper vans/motorhomes.
Very clean facilities

Disliked: In late April no sun in the early morning. It slowly creeps across the valley to the site.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Really good layout for the campers all with EHU points, I managed to get one next to a bench which was handy. The pitch was nice and flat too. The best location for exploring the high fells on the Helvellyn massif as the track up to Sticks Pass is directly at the side of the farm. The hosts are extremely friendly, plenty of animals around as Stybeck is a busy working farm and loved seeing all the new lambs and chicks. Facilities include toilets and showers

Disliked: Nothing. It was exactly what I wanted in the location I wanted, I will be returning!

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Loved Stybeck Farm. If you enjoy a simple campervan experience then book. An amazingly busy working farm (we visited during lambing season), but the owners still find time to be so helpful and up for a chat.
The views are 10/10, you are right in the middle of the Lakes, we walked from the van straight up to the hills and did a big loop finishing with a climb up Helvellyn - wow.
Decent shower and loo facilities.
You can sit and watch the busy farm, especially the cheeky donkey, buy fresh eggs for breakfast.
We did 2 nights up in the top yard and a third night down along the fence right next to the fields - both spots had amazing views - we will definitely be back.

Birchell’s summer house microlodge

Liked: We had a lovley stay in the cabin. Its so cosy with the log fire and set in such a lovley location. It's perfect for getting away from the busy life. The owner was excellent, and could never do too much for us. Its a very basic cabin, however that's exactly what we wanted. The location is slap bang in the middle of the lakes making it the perfect base exploring both the southern and northern lakes without too much of a drive. While this is a fully operational farm, this didn't affect our stay. It was lovley seeing the animals, and quite eye opening to how busy the life of a farmer can be. I'll more than likely return.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Beautiful location and welcoming host. All you need for this type of site. We did undertake a hike which we didn't plan for from Stybeck. Just loved it and will be going back if any vacancies on our return trip South. Easy to find and easy access to some fabulous locations.
Highly recommended.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

Travel 10 minutes in the car, and about 5000 years back in time, to see Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the earliest constructions of its kind in Britain. It’s also 10 minutes’ drive to start your journey to discover another important part of the Lake District’s history – albeit a bit more recent – on the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Trail, which repurposes the Victorian railway line as an accessible path through tunnels and over bridges. If the weather isn’t playing nice, there are a couple of popular places to while away a rainy few hours in Keswick (10 minutes' drive): the Derwent Pencil Museum and The Puzzling Place, where nothing is quite as it seems. Keswick's also the place for boat trips and watersports on Derwentwater. Alternatively, if you fancy a pint or a dram to put a spring in your step, and want to learn all about how they’re made, you could pay a visit to the Keswick Brewing Company (10 minutes) or the Lakes Distillery in Cockermouth (20 minutes).
