Ullswater view

  • Wild camping with spectacular views of Ullswater in the Lake District
  • Pooley Bridge five minutes’ drive, and Lowther Castle 20 minutes
  • Spring water and portable toilets on site; pub 10 minutes’ walk
When it comes to the Lake District, there are many spectacular views, but the one from Ullswater View Campsite is right up there as a serious contender for a prize. The name gives it away somewhat, as this off-grid, wild camping site does indeed have spectacular views over Ullswater Lake and the surrounding forested mountains. At 20 minutes’ drive from the shops of Penrith in Cumbria, this is a spot to really get back to basics; portable toilets, rubbish bins and water from a natural spring are the only facilities you’ll find on site – so at this juncture please note that means no showers and no electricity. Part of the mown camping field is on an incline (all the better to admire those lake views), and due to the angle of the entrance gateway, you’ll need to drive up the lane and turn around before entering the site. The track leading to the pitches is not accessible to low-slung cars either. Having said all that, the site does have a wonderful setting, it’s dog-friendly (as long as your four-legged pal is kept on a lead), and it’s 10 minutes’ scenic walk from a cosy pub serving good food and beer. Staying here also puts you a handy five minutes’ drive from all the sporting action on Ullswater itself. There are firepits for hire and logs for sale on site if you'd like to spend the eve around a fire.

What customers say

This campsite offers stunning views of Ullswater and a "back to basics" experience with ample space. Guests consistently praise the friendly and attentive owner, Sophie, and the convenient location near a pub and lake access. While some noted the basic facilities, including portaloos and a lack of drinking water, were generally maintained, issues with cleanliness and noise from other campers were occasionally reported. Opportunities to hire fire pits were a popular addition.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely view, clear instructions for how to find the field, everything as advertised (portaloos in good condition and a tap for non-drinking water)

Disliked The noise levels from other guests - a couple of loud generators running until almost midnight, with other guests chatting and singing until after that. This was not a quiet, unplugged sort of campsite. Also, given the very basic facilities, it was an expensive stay for a single person - not sure if it works out cheaper for groups.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Not one to usually write a full marks review but can’t complain about anything at all. Lots of space, lovely views, friendly and welcoming owners, local pub and access to the lake. Only 10 mins from Pooley bridge so lots of shops and pubs without being in the middle of a busy town.

Disliked Nothing to twist about other than the full site being on a slight hill but that’s nature. No showers

Liked Incredible views of the lake, you’re allowed fires, nice owner / staff

Disliked They don’t stick to their policies re only allowing couples or families and stopping noise 9.30pm-7am. Toilets also got quite bad after busy night during bank holiday.

Local attractions

Drive down to Pooley Bridge (five minutes by car) at the head of Ullswater for yomps along the Ullswater Way encircling the lake. Father south, stop off at the National Trust car park (10 minutes) and walk up to the impressive Aira Force Waterfall, inspiration for the poem ‘The Somnambulist’ by William Wordsworth, written in 1833. Experienced hikers may care to drive to Patterdale (15 minutes) and clamber up Helvellyn for spectacular Lake District views, while others may settle for a stately voyage around Ullswater aboard the historic steamboat ‘Lady of the Lake’ from Glenridding (15 minutes), itself a pretty lakeside village with tea rooms and souvenir shops. Lowther Castle and Gardens (20 minutes) has imposing and photogenic ruins of a massive mansion as well as parterres and parkland to wander, or you can buy marmalade – reputed to be the best in the world – at Dalemain Historic Mansion and Gardens. If you hit a rainy day, catch a film at Rheged (both 10 minutes).
