  • Wild camping with spectacular views of Ullswater in the Lake District
  • Pooley Bridge five minutes’ drive, and Lowther Castle 20 minutes
  • Spring water and portable toilets on site; pub 10 minutes’ walk
When it comes to the Lake District, there are many spectacular views, but the one from Ullswater View Campsite is right up there as a serious contender for a prize. The name gives it away somewhat, as this off-grid, wild camping site does indeed have spectacular views over Ullswater Lake and the surrounding forested mountains. At 20 minutes’ drive from the shops of Penrith in Cumbria, this is a spot to really get back to basics; portable toilets, rubbish bins and water from a natural spring are the only facilities you’ll find on site – so at this juncture please note that means no showers and no electricity. Part of the mown camping field is on an incline (all the better to admire those lake views), and due to the angle of the entrance gateway, you’ll need to drive up the lane and turn around before entering the site. The track leading to the pitches is not accessible to low-slung cars either. Having said all that, the site does have a wonderful setting, it’s dog-friendly (as long as your four-legged pal is kept on a lead), and it’s 10 minutes’ scenic walk from a cosy pub serving good food and beer. Staying here also puts you a handy five minutes’ drive from all the sporting action on Ullswater itself. There are firepits for hire and logs for sale on site if you'd like to spend the eve around a fire.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The view was amazing!

Disliked: Sophie seemed lovely however the only reason we picked this site over another was because of being able to have a fire pit. We were told the price of them early in the day but no real instructions on how to get one. Sophie came down at around 7:45pm and we mentioned we’d love one. She said she’d be back in 30 minutes. She never came back to our site unfortunately. For the amount of people there, I also don’t know if 4 porta-loos were enough. They were always dirty and full. I totally understand the “wild camping” site of things, I just feel if you are going to offer certain features/amenities (ie, fire pits, toilets) it would be nice to actually receive them.

Disliked: Asked for firewood twice and never received. Suppose to be quiet after 9:30 but music on till 2am. Little disrespectful to other campers.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely beautiful views! Would visit again just for them! The site was very close to pooley bridge and had a lovely pub at the bottom of the road that served very nice food! Ullswater lake was just a stone through away, which was very helpful. Overall great location and stay.

Disliked: There was no bins on the site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Gorgeous views of Ullswater Lake! Close to Pooley bridge.

Disliked: Toilets became very dirty very quickly, I appreciate it was a busy weekend but would have been nice if they were checked. Also was asked by host at 6pm if wanted a fire pit for £15, said yes but then she didn’t deliver it till nearly 10pm? When the night was almost over. This was after several phone calls too, we weren’t the only pitch waiting. Also no drinking water available on site.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: They were checked please please please do not visit again shame it’s not like Uber we’re you get to leave a review about the guests it would make more fair

Wouldn’t recommend if you don’t like wild camping.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The views were nice

Disliked: Portaloos were vile, the grass could do with a cut, hasn’t rained in weeks yet cars were getting stuck. Not sure why it was £40, there were gates open and not one person checking if you actually booked to stay.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Yeah typicall utter bs review shame I can’t write a review on the sort of guests you were to warn other campsite owners please don’t come back

Liked: Beautiful views

Disliked: 4 porta loos which were disgusting and overflowing. No bins anywhere. Asked Sophie for logs 4 times over 4/5 hours and never turned up

From the manager: There was a bin there next to the toilets as there always is but we do state that rubbish is to be taken away it’s quite funny that you were to lazy to clean your mess up yet have the cheek to come on here an run your mouth saying there’s no bin

Local attractions

Drive down to Pooley Bridge (five minutes by car) at the head of Ullswater for yomps along the Ullswater Way encircling the lake. Father south, stop off at the National Trust car park (10 minutes) and walk up to the impressive Aira Force Waterfall, inspiration for the poem ‘The Somnambulist’ by William Wordsworth, written in 1833. Experienced hikers may care to drive to Patterdale (15 minutes) and clamber up Helvellyn for spectacular Lake District views, while others may settle for a stately voyage around Ullswater aboard the historic steamboat ‘Lady of the Lake’ from Glenridding (15 minutes), itself a pretty lakeside village with tea rooms and souvenir shops. Lowther Castle and Gardens (20 minutes) has imposing and photogenic ruins of a massive mansion as well as parterres and parkland to wander, or you can buy marmalade – reputed to be the best in the world – at Dalemain Historic Mansion and Gardens. If you hit a rainy day, catch a film at Rheged (both 10 minutes).
