  • Scenic Lake District site with easy access from the M6
  • A 10-minute drive to Pooley Bridge, Ullswater and Lowther Castle
  • Laidback pitches with space for kids to play; dogs welcome
You don’t have to go very far into the Lake District National Park to start appreciating the gorgeous views – and the area around Helton Campsite is a case in point. This spacious Cumbria site is only a couple of miles from the M6 at the northern end of the park so it’s a handy spot for a stopover or a quick fix of country air. That said, the scenery around here is lovely enough that you could certainly settle here for several days – pitches have gorgeous open views over the surrounding countryside, and there are lots of places to get out for a walk nearby too. Pooley Bridge is about 10 minutes’ drive away for outings on and around Ullswater, and you’ll also easily be able to get to other top spots like Aira Force waterfall and Haweswater (or Skiddaw and Helvellyn if you’d rather do some climbing). Life on site is fairly simple, with just the essentials provided to keep you going: pitches have access to a toilet and fresh mountain water for drinking, and there’s a field where families can play games. Dogs are welcome to join you here for Lake District jaunts, and there’s space to give them a run around on site plus plenty of choice for walking routes nearby. This corner of the Lake District has several choices for eating out at pubs and the like, but you’re also welcome to light barbecues or campfires on site if you’d rather settle in for an evening of outdoor cooking. There’s a convenience store just over a mile away in the village of Askham (which also has a pub and an open-air swimming pool).

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great pop up site, plenty of space and toilet and shower blocks were clean and well maintained. The views around the surrounding areas from the site are amazing and if you get a clear night, the stars are incredible.

Disliked: Grass was a little long but not really a huge issue.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: It was a lovely campsite- great for star gazing and we got firewood and had a lovely fire. There were a group of young people (who were very lovely and friendly) but they were passing music loudly from around 3pm to 11pm which was a little irritating. Aside from that, all good.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: There was a group of 12 of us mixed females and males.. we liked how chilled the site was the owners came round to check we was ok and if we needed anything , they brought us logs and a bucket for the fire and were very helpful if we needed anything . The toilets are kept clean with toilet roll , there is a shower which is cold but as it was a hot weekend we didn’t mind , there is a sink with hand sanitizer and cold running water which was perfect to fill our bottled up with and brush our teeth. The views were breath taking , the site is just a field with toilets but that’s what we wanted as there was 12 of us who were there for a good time having a few drinks we didn’t want a site that was going to be strict . We kept the noise down when it went dark.. The lake is a 20 min drive from site here you can go paddle boarding and cold water swimming ullwater lake is a definite must when the weather is nice Thank you so much for this perfect get away we also needed jump leads , I rang William and he sent somebody 9am Sunday morning to come help start the car . He didn’t charge us or seem like it was an issue thank you for going out your way to do this

Disliked: The grass was abit long and we lost our rounders ball 😂 but really wasn’t an issue

Liked: We really loved out stay. It was in middle of know where but also not far from the local town. It wasn't far away from our home but we also felt hours away. The scenery was stunning and other campers were respectful.

Liked: Everything was great. Could only have been better if the showers had hot water. Fantastic views and friendly camp manager who delivered wood each night.

Disliked: No hot water which made washing up and showing difficult.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Disliked: We arrived at Helton campsite on a sunny evening. There was a small campervan already stuck in the boggy muddy entrance to the campsite. There was however room for us to also try to enter the field in our small campervan in what looked like a slightly less boggy area. We tried and our front wheels got stuck. The owner said that his son usually ran the site and it was clear he was trying his best to keep people happy in a tricky situation. He offered to tow us in to the site and on to the field, however we were worried about getting stuck there, not being able to get out - the field was large and it was unclear how boggy the rest of the field was. We were able to reverse out off the mud and go back on to the road, as we were tight on time however and needed to also go out that evening, we were unable to stick around to discuss our options (eve refund etc) with the owner. We left and called another site who luckily had space and so did not end up staying at Helton. When we left the original campervan was deflating their tyres slightly to help to get out of the boggy area. We did not stay at this site, however from the road it looked very big (lots of cars and tents and spacious, but serviced by a few portaloos. There may have been more that were less visible.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The views Big open spaces The option to buy wood for fires ( they provide old wheels as a base) Which is lovely Quiet unknown part of the lake district with beautiful local walks

Disliked: Toilets - in a wood hut Showers- beyond basic so didn’t attempt with my children No on-site personnel Didn’t matter on our visit but if some undesirable campers are onsite could pose a problem This really is just a field

Local attractions

Walking trails for all abilities are plentiful in the Lake District – from Helton your options include lakeside ambling by Ullswater (10 minutes’ drive) or the short stroll to Aira Force waterfall (25 minutes) or more challenging outings like the ascent of Helvellyn (half an hour). Those aren’t the only options for exploring though – the area around Pooley Bridge (10 minutes) has boat hire, various watersports and horse riding centres. The natural views are spectacular, of course, but there are some lovely buildings to see too – nearby Lowther Castle & Gardens (10 minutes) is worth a visit for the grand building, the 130-acre gardens and the adventure playground, and the Grade I-listed Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens (15 minutes) is equally lovely. If the weather takes a turn, there are several things to keep you busy in Keswick (35 minutes), including the Derwent Pencil Museum, Puzzling Place and tours of the Keswick Brewing Company.
