  • Simple site on a family-run working farm a mile from Orton, Cumbria
  • Between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District; close to the C2C Walk
  • Views of the Howgill Fells; nearby walking and cycling trails
Moor House Farm Camping is a simple site on a large family-run working farm in the Cumbria countryside, just under a mile from the pretty village of Orton and a five-minute drive from the M6. It’s the kind of location that’s likely to win lots of fans: look out over gorgeous views of the Howgill Fells while on site, then easily get out to the village for a pub (a proper country pub with real ales, meals and takeaways), a café, a well-stocked shop, a play area and a chocolate-maker, plus a farmers’ market (every second Saturday of the month). Orton village is also on the Coast to Coast (C2C) Walk, so this farm makes a good stopover point for long-distance travellers, as well as those who’d like to sample a smaller section of this route. There are peaceful walks and bike rides to be had all around, with the Lake District National Park on one side and the Yorkshire Dales on the other. There’s plenty of space to relax on the farm, where you can watch the cows and sheep grazing in neighbouring fields. (Please note that life on a working farm does come with a bit of noise from various bits of machinery and the occasional ‘country smell’…) Facilities include showers, a toilet block with washbasins (and hot water), hand dryers and an outdoor washing-up area. Electricity for the shower block is provided by an on-site wind turbine. This is an unlit site, so you’ll want to bring along a torch.

What customers say

This is a spacious, peaceful working farm campsite with beautiful rural views, conveniently located close to the M6. Visitors consistently praise the exceptionally clean and well-maintained toilet and shower facilities, as well as the friendly and welcoming owners. The open field offers plenty of space for pitching and relaxing. Some mention potential for slight noise from the farm or motorway, and occasional reports of sloped pitches, though flat areas are available.

Liked Lovely spacious field with good views. Clean toilets and showers. Picnic tables. Pub and cafe etc in village within easy walking distance.

Disliked Not exactly disliked as we got a picnic table but could maybe do with a few more so more people could use them.

Local attractions

On a hot summer day, the open-air pool in Shap (10 minutes’ drive) is a popular spot to cool down; if you’d rather stay out of (but still close to) the water, head to Bessy Beck (15 minutes) for a spot of trout fishing. The Riverside Golf Club (15 minutes) has an 18-hole course at the foot of the Howgill Fells. The imposing ruins of Lowther Castle & Gardens (25 minutes) seem to emerge from the woodland east of Ullswater. Stroll around the gardens, past topiary yews and wildflower meadows buzzing with bees, then take in splendid views of the Lowther Valley from the Western Terrace. The kids can meet Peter Rabbit and other characters from the Beatrix Potter stories at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (45 minutes), on the western shore of Lake Windermere. For more Potter action, head to National Trust - Hill Top Beatrix Potter House (an hour), across the lake.
