Moor House Farm Camping: View from the farm

General

  • Family-friendly site on a family-run working farm a mile from Orton
  • Between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District; close to the C2C route
  • A five-minute drive from the M6 and Tebay services/farm shop

Moor House Farm Camping is a simple campsite on a large family-run working farm in the Cumbria countryside, just under a mile from the pretty village of Orton.

It’s the kind of location that’s likely to win lots of fans: look out over gorgeous views of the Howgill Fells while on site, then easily get out to the village for a pub (a proper country pub with real ales, meals and takeaways), a café, a well-stocked village shop, a play area and a chocolate-maker, plus a farmers’ market (every second Saturday of the month).

Orton’s also on the famed Coast to Coast route, so this farm makes a good stopover point for long-distance travellers as well as those who’d like to sample a smaller section. There are peaceful walks and bike rides to be had all around, with the Lake District National Park on one side and the Yorkshire Dales on the other.

There’s plenty of space to relax on the farm, where you can watch the cows and sheep grazing in neighbouring fields or make arrangements to play with the lambs and calves. (Please note that life on a working farm does come with a bit of noise from various bits of machinery and the occasional ‘country smell’…)

Facilities at this site include showers, a toilet block with hot washbasins, hand dryers and an outdoor washing-up area. Electricity for the shower block is provided by an on-site wind turbine. This is an unlit site, so you’ll want to bring along a torch; it’s also got no bins so you’ll need to take any rubbish away with you.

Please note

No electric barbecues allowed.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

No gas barbecues allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

This is a lovely back-to-basics farm campsite! I chose to stay here overnight to break up a drive from Scotland to the south coast of England, so the proximity to the M6 was why I chose it. The Google maps and sign posts worked well, as did the clear information board when you arrive. There was plenty of space to pitch, the portaloos were clean, and the owners came over to say hi and check that I had everything I needed, they are welcoming and friendly! Although you can hear the M6 it is not at all loud, I had a very comfortable nights sleep, and I'm a light sleeper. And the rural views of the hills was lovely! I would happily stay here again.

We stayed here for 7 nights and loved it! The campsite was very clean, including the toilets which were cleaned every day. The campsite is in a quiet, relaxing area with beautiful views. The owners were lovely and very helpful, we even got a tour of the farm and got to pet some animals! There is a nice pub only a 15-20 minute walk away and lots of quiet walks around the area. We definitely recommend going here, we will be returning ourselves next year :)

I had an amazing stay at Moor farm campsite; It was restful and relaxing. The family were so lovely and kind and went well above and beyond to help me sort out some things (not things associated with the campsite!).
The view from the site is stunning and, as well as having easy access to and from the M6, it’s well placed as a base for exploring both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. You can even start walks directly from the campsite!! The additional attraction of a working farm, where you can arrange to see and interact with the baby animals, makes this especially attractive for children. The site was lovely and quiet when I stayed and the toilets were spotless. I found the quiet, rhythmic sound of the windmill to be soothing and comforting at night - a bit like the sound of waves on a distant beach. Being able to light a camp fire, means that evenings can be very sociable - toasted marshmallows are always a great way to end an evening!
