  • Peaceful site on a family-run Cumbria working farm
  • Between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks
  • Next to Hutton Roof Crags and Farleton Knott; easy access from the M6
On the side of a fell between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District national parks is a splendid place to be – and that’s exactly where you’ll be spending time if you bed down at Cumbria site Once Upon a Fell. And there’s another bonus with this location too, as it’s only 10 minutes’ drive from the M6 for easy get-ins and get-outs. This site is based on a working dairy and sheep farm, with gorgeous views out over hills and farmland stretching over to Ingleborough, the Howgills and the fells of the Lake District. Getting out to see more of that scenery is easy too, as there’s pretty much instant access to public footpaths and bridleways just outside the farm. Farleton Knott and Hutton Roof Crags are within walking distance, so many folk simply park up on site and spend their stay walking, climbing or riding bikes in the immediate surrounds (or relaxing… that’s allowed too…) If you do want to explore more widely, that’s easily done too: get into either of the national parks with a drive of 15-20 minutes, or head over to the coast around the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with just a slightly longer journey. Keen to keep the countryside as it should be, the owners have set up their place as an eco-responsible site that has minimal impact from its facilities (which include showers, compost loos and a washing-up area). Barbecues and campfires are allowed at this spacious site, but please note that dogs can’t come along to stay here as there’s livestock next to the pitches.

The Sheep Pen cabin

Liked: Absolutely loved our weekend at Once Upon a Fell! We stayed with our two children and in the little cabin on site. The cabin itself had a little sitting area, which we used for our kid’s beds, and the bed. It’s all in one room, but it was spacious and kept warm with the wood stove. The bed was really comfy and there were really nice warm comfy blankets and a ton of pillows. It was so cozy and welcoming! We also had a toilet, little sink, and shower which was really nice for not having to leave the cabin to get ready in the morning. There is shampoo, conditioner, and body wash provided and they smelled lovely! You’ll need to bring your own towels though. Outside there is a little kitchen just off to the right of the door. They have provided dish soap and hand soap by the sink. They also have pots, pans, and some basic dishes (cutlery, cups, and mugs), a can opener, etc. there is also a cooler provided to keep things temporarily cold, however there is also a exclusive fridge up the path towards the campsites. It’s not too far away. The area we stayed in was also fenced so our dog was able to run around off lead which was amazing. We also had the sheep come up to the fence with their little lambs as well as being able to see the horses grazing. Absolutely amazing experience. I would highly recommend this beautiful place to anyone!
