If adventures in the Lake District National Park are calling, how about a glamping pod with some little luxuries and home comforts to retreat to after a day's exploring? Highside Farm is a family-run, 400-acre working sheep and beef farm, 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Keswick, and the scenes here are pretty inviting. The wooden pods are on a rural hillside position and the site has views of Bassenthwaite Lake, Ullock Pike and Skiddaw mountain, so you’ll be itching to get out for lakeside strolls and mountain treks… if you can tear yourself away from your well-equipped pod, that is. Inside, the pods sleep up to four with bedding supplied. There’s an ensuite shower room and a kitchenette with microwave, hob and fridge freezer, so rustling up big breakfasts ahead of your park ambles is no trouble. There are some cosy extras, too, including double glazing and underfloor heating, while the sofa is the ideal spot to curl up and relax. At warmer times, you may well prefer to relocate to a spot by the firepit and and barbecue for an alfresco evening under the stars. Handy touches include Freeview TV and plenty of electrical points. There’s also good 4G signal, so you can keep friends and family up to speed with your Lake District adventures while you’re away.

When you’ve wandered by Bassenthwaite Lake and conquered Skiddaw mountain, turn your attention to some of the area’s other top walking and cycling picks, including Dodd Wood (five minutes’ drive) and Whinlatter Forest Park, where there’s also a Go Ape (15 minutes). Be on the lookout for wildlife sightings while you explore, too. Time can also be well spent strolling around some pretty houses and gardens nearby. Mirehouse & Gardens (five minutes) has woodland adventure playgrounds and picnic areas, while Wordsworth House and Garden (20 minutes), the childhood home of romantic poet William Wordsworth, is one for the literary fans. For more history, get your creative juices flowing at Derwent Pencil Museum (10 minutes), check out the prehistoric monument, Castlerigg Stone Circle (15 minutes) or set off an underground tour of Honister Slate Mine (35 minutes). Make the most of your proximity to Derwentwater and catch a performance at Theatre by the Lake (15 minutes), or take to the water with lake cruises and boat hire (15 minutes). There are more than 100 species of animals to spot at the 25-acre Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes), with indoor and outdoor play areas for the kids; meanwhile, adults might like to opt for tours and tastings at Jennings Brewery (20 minutes).
