  • Quiet hillside farm site in west Cumbria with views to the sea
  • Coast, lakes, hill walks and mountain biking within 40 minutes' drive
  • Around five minutes' drive to Caldbeck for pub, cafés and shop
Blecogo… Red Dial… Theckthwaite Beck… There are some fine place names in this part of Cumbria and some fine spots to stop in, too. Wallace Lane Farm can't compete in the intriguing name stakes but it's certainly a winner on the fine spot front. The views from this farm are spectacular: the Irish Sea, the Solway Firth, the first of the Galloway hills. Whatever you're looking at, and whichever parts of this fab area you're visiting, you'll likely appreciate the laundry and drying room as well as the hot showers in the heated washrooms. And at the end of your day of exploring, you can sit round a campfire or grill your bangers on a barbecue – both are welcome and there are two washing-up areas for pots and pans. It's just over five minutes' drive from the farm to Caldbeck, which has a pub with food and two cafés as well as a shop for supplies. Perhaps you could pick up a picnic and wander through the village along the banks of the Caldew river? If you're into fishing, day permits are available on many of the rivers and streams of the surrounding area; the Wampool, Waver and Ellen are favourites for those seeking trout and salmon.

Liked Beautiful peaceful setting. Friendly staff. Everything was very clean, tidy and well organised. Pizza's delivered on some days of the week was a bonus! Really good dog walk area.

Disliked The toilets and showers were spotless but there didn't seem to be that many for the number of people who might stay at peak times.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The location is great in terms of driving access being easy to get to and an hour's drive to Buttermere. Being by the cows/farm is very sweet. Showers and toilets kept as clean as can be by the staff. Overall had a positive family friendly feel. Having a fridge was a bonus I hadn't seen at other campsites also I didn't get the pizza but another nice extra. Clean and tidy with overall good experience.

Disliked I did stay over bank holiday but the amount of warm showers and toilets seemed too few for the busy periods - there were queues. Don't think most people want to use the cold water ones. Not a campsite for people looking to feel in the wild with stunning views - which is to be expected from its location. The bins were overflowing when I left and didn't seem to have a recycling bin so could maybe get one if don't already. I wouldn't put this as my first choice to stay again though that's largely because I'm looking for more spectacular scenery and ability to do mountain hikes/lake swims from the site.

Liked What a good location in Lake District and excellent camp site. You can go to Maryport, Carlisle, Derwentwater, Grasmere not over one hour. The staffs are excellent too, their arrangements were perfect. My friends and I had a great time having a holiday.

Liked The site was clean, had lovely bathroom facilities which were warm and stocked with cleaning products for you to use. The washing facilities were lovely. Staff members were all lovely and approachable. Pitches well kept, easy to pitch tents. Lovely location.
By far the nicest campsite I have been too.

Disliked WiFi often disconnected but did only use for Google maps so not that I needed to use it much

Local attractions

Sea fishing without a boat can be tried from the banks of the Solway Firth at Port Carlisle (half an hour by car); alternatively try your hand on the waters of Bassenthwaite lake, 25 minutes away. Bassenthwaite is a bumper spot for lake walks and if you're in need of fortification, there's a distillery at the northern end doing tours and tastings. If you're more of a high mountains type, paths up Skiddaw and Grisedale Pike start half an hour from the site. A real peak-bagger could rack up two national parks in a day round here; routes up Cross Fell, jewel of the North Pennines, start an hour away. Mountain bikers make for Whinlatter Forest Park (40 minutes) to hire wheels and try the UK's longest purpose-built tracks; the park's also popular with those seeking treetop thrills on the high ropes. It's a good place to test your mettle before scrambling along the via ferrata cableway at Honister Slate Mine, an hour away. For days down at lake level, you can be sailing, rowing or taking a boat cruise to the little islands on Derwentwater within half an hour; Ambleside, at the top of Lake Windermere with its steamers and watersports, is an hour's journey by car. To see some cracking coastline, it's half an hour to Bowness-on-Solway and Mayport, both good for nature-filled walks and Roman history.
