Blecogo… Red Dial… Theckthwaite Beck… There are some fine place names in this part of Cumbria and some fine spots to stop in, too. Wallace Lane Farm can't compete in the intriguing name stakes but it's certainly a winner on the fine spot front. The views from this farm are spectacular: the Irish Sea, the Solway Firth, the first of the Galloway hills. Whatever you're looking at, and whichever parts of this fab area you're visiting, you'll likely appreciate the laundry and drying room as well as the hot showers in the heated washrooms. And at the end of your day of exploring, you can sit round a campfire or grill your bangers on a barbecue – both are welcome and there are two washing-up areas for pots and pans. It's just over five minutes' drive from the farm to Caldbeck, which has a pub with food and two cafés as well as a shop for supplies. Perhaps you could pick up a picnic and wander through the village along the banks of the Caldew river? If you're into fishing, day permits are available on many of the rivers and streams of the surrounding area; the Wampool, Waver and Ellen are favourites for those seeking trout and salmon.

Mi è piaciuto: Friendly welcomening. Showers & toilettes extremly clean. Will stop again in the near future as its not too far from m6 if your heading up scotland defo worth the divert.

Mi è piaciuto: Extremely welcoming and friendly staff they helped us pitch up and showed us the on site facilities. Showers were nice and hot and didn’t require to be pressed every minute like some other sites.

Mi è piaciuto: The location is great. Loved the peace and quiet. The site includes everything you need for a relaxing break. The hottub was a treat.

Mi è piaciuto: This is probably one of the best sites we have stay on. Lovely friendly staff,big spaced out pitches.we was pitch 34 hard standing/with hot tub. Pitch was pretty level and good gravel,tap for water and waste disposal 200 yards away. Wasn’t that busy so view was of empty fields,with sheep and cows in distance fields which was great. You could hear the cows mooing,think they disliked the rain. Access to two toilets/shower blocks both spotless,well equipped,fridge freeze,phone charger lockers,laundry and all heated. Great interesting marked out dog walking route with llamas in one field ,well stocked shop,fire pits,logs etc. Our pitch had a hot tub which was fabulous,was taken care of by the staff we didn’t have to do a thing! It’s fenced in for privacy and you have patio furniture also. Strong signal and Free WiFI. The pizzas by Crust and Co were delicious,you text them your order and desired time of arrival and they deliver to your pitch! Wonderful stay.

Non mi è piaciuto: Not really dislikes just personal preference. No pub in walking distance. I understand the fence for privacy around hot tub,but an opportunity to enjoy a view would be nice,maybe Some noise behind our pitch from road/timber yard,but nothing too disturbing,just aware. If your visiting the lakes,it’s quite a drive away.

Mi è piaciuto: Lovely welcome with some great facilities. Shower area clean and well kept. Great fridge/freezer and WiFi. Wood fired pizzas delivered to pitch were a lovely touch. Generally well maintained site.

Non mi è piaciuto: Some large holes in the site that weren't ideal to pitch over/near. Site backs onto a 60mph road so some road noise could be heard.

Sea fishing without a boat can be tried from the banks of the Solway Firth at Port Carlisle (half an hour by car); alternatively try your hand on the waters of Bassenthwaite lake, 25 minutes away. Bassenthwaite is a bumper spot for lake walks and if you're in need of fortification, there's a distillery at the northern end doing tours and tastings. If you're more of a high mountains type, paths up Skiddaw and Grisedale Pike start half an hour from the site. A real peak-bagger could rack up two national parks in a day round here; routes up Cross Fell, jewel of the North Pennines, start an hour away. Mountain bikers make for Whinlatter Forest Park (40 minutes) to hire wheels and try the UK's longest purpose-built tracks; the park's also popular with those seeking treetop thrills on the high ropes. It's a good place to test your mettle before scrambling along the via ferrata cableway at Honister Slate Mine, an hour away. For days down at lake level, you can be sailing, rowing or taking a boat cruise to the little islands on Derwentwater within half an hour; Ambleside, at the top of Lake Windermere with its steamers and watersports, is an hour's journey by car. To see some cracking coastline, it's half an hour to Bowness-on-Solway and Mayport, both good for nature-filled walks and Roman history.
