  • Luxury glampsite on a sheep farm in the Lake District National Park
  • Half an hour to Ullswater; 35 minutes to Derwentwater and Siloth beach
  • Cattle and sheep on site, plus a pizza oven and honestly shop
For a dose of comfort on your outdoor adventure in Cumbria, take a look at Feather Down Farm – Howbeck Lodge at Hesket Newmarket in the Lake District National Park. This family-friendly glampsite serves up spacious and stylish safari tents on a traditional upland sheep farm. Inside the tents, all is warm and cosy, with comfy sofas, a dining area and kitchen with everything you need to conjure up camping suppers. Beds come with quality mattresses and feather duvets, and each unit has access to exclusive-use toilets and hot showers. There is no electricity (or wifi, better prepare the kids) in the safari tents, and light is supplied by candles and oil lamps. Heat comes from woodburning stoves, which also double down as cookers. Outside, covered decking acts as a shelter if the weather turns nasty, and for clement days there’s a firepit for alfresco dining around the picnic table. Expect pizza nights from time to time, and if you run out of basics, head for the honesty shop, which also stocks local produce for tasty Lake District souvenirs. You’ll have plenty of time to take in the spectacular hill views as you potter around the glampsite. If you have questions about farm life, or would like a tour, just ask the Stobarts – the owners of Howbeck – who will be happy to oblige. If you want a change of scenery, the village of Hesket Newmarket (five minutes’ walk) has a welcoming pub, one of the first in the country to be bought and run by the community.

Local attractions

Up for exploring the Lake District National Park on foot? Some serious hikes are within half an hour’s drive of Howbeck Lodge, including Great Sca, High Pike and Lowthwaite fells, all with stunning views over moorland and mountains. If you’d rather do your exploring on two wheels, quiet country lanes and dedicated bike paths make Lake District cycling a breeze. If the kids are demanding days at the beach, the Solway Firth coastline has sandy strips at Silloth (35 minutes) and Maryport (40 minutes) among several others. Alternatively, head for the lakes of Ullswater (half an hour) and Bassenthwaite (20 minutes) for dips on balmy days. If that doesn’t appeal, discover Windermere (50 minutes) aboard a vintage steam boat, or navigate Derwentwater (35 minutes) by kayak or canoe. If you’ve got younger children on board, take them to watch eagle owls in flight at the Lakeland Bird Of Prey Centre (half an hour), interact with the cute bunny rabbit exhibits at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (an hour) or spot flamingos and lemurs at The Lake District Wildlife Park (20 minutes).
