General

  • Off-grid camping pods in a rural spot with gorgeous Solway Firth views
  • Five minutes’ drive to North Lakeland fells; 30 minutes to Keswick
  • Well-equipped pods with stoves; shared spa hot tub and LPG showers

On the northern fringes of the Lake District National Park, Cherry Trees Farm Campsite offers a couple of wooden camping pods with spectacular views over the Solway coast and the North Lakeland fells. This is a fab base for anyone wanting to explore the peaceful and beautiful county of Cumbria on foot or by bike.

Surprisingly, considering its remote vibe, Cherry Trees is only 15 minutes’ drive from the M6, and the historic villages of Caldbeck and Hesket Newmarket (both 10 minutes) are packed with pubs and village stores to keep you fed and watered.

Although the location is very rural, there’s masses and masses to do hereabouts, from walking the fells to wild swimming on the Solway Firth (35 minutes), horse riding and golf. If you want to up the pace, there are ziplines at Honister Slate Mine (50 minutes), and if the weather turns, sporty types can stay active at swimming pools and leisure centres (both 20 minutes).

Back at base, the natty wooden pods are sited on the edge of a traditional hay meadow, and each is fully equipped to sleep two people – all bedding, towels, crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils are provided so you don't have to bother bringing everything from home.

Facilities include your own LPG-fired shower and compostable loo, a small kitchen area with a gas stove and a sink with hot and cold running water. On top of that, a major-league bonus is the use of a private hot tub included in the price of each pod – there's no better way to relax after a day out on the fells.

Myself, my partner and our 8 week old belgium malinois puppy had a fantastic stay on this campsite. Loads of space and freedom for our puppy to run around. Owner was very approachable, friendly and helpful (he helped us out massively on more than one occasion and his dog is awsome and friendly too.) All facilities needed ie showers, toilets, hot water was spot on. Nothing more needed on a campsite when camping (apart from wellies when it's been raining so much so you don't get bogged down 😂😂 but it all adds to the adventure and memories.)

    Located in a beautiful spot.
    Would highly recommend.
    We will be back.

Fantastic stay will definitely be back. The host was so friendly and helpful. We turned up with our 1 year old on our first family camping trip and found part of our tent was missing. We thought we would have to go home but he let us borrow his spare tent. The facilities were the cleanest I have ever seen on a a campsite. We had a magical stay and made some amazing memories. Thank you ☺️

I rang the owner, Alan, upon arrival & he was straight there. I had a choice of 2 big fields to pitch up on with plenty of space between pitches. Me & my 2 travelling terriers were made very welcome. I hired a fire pit & bought a couple of bags of wood which was brought over to my pitch straight away. The views are stunning there & it’s not too far to drive to the Solway Firth beach where you can walk all day or choose to take a walk on the nearby fells. Alan bobbed over to check all was well & kindly asked if I needed anything from the shop as he was going anyway! The Heavens opened on the Sunday & as I was car camping I was offered the use of an empty tent or 1 of the pods! The facilities are basic but clean and very well maintained. Bring wellies/wet weather shoes & waterproofs because it is the Lake District after all! Don’t forget your torch! All-in-all I think this is a very special place indeed and I will definitely be visiting again. On a fine day the sunrise can be seen beautifully & the sunset is amazing. On a clear night the skies are shiny bright with stars. What more could one ask for?

Really enjoyed the stay at the camp site. It was a basic campsite but had every thing we needed. The owner was happy to sell us fire wood too. The showers were hot, and the toilets were clean. We were able to park next to the tent and we arrived late. Cheap and cheerful

Lovely quiet little campsite, very friendly and helpful host and is on hand if you need anything.

Two open fields with grass pitches. Rural location, 15 min drive to local villages with pubs and shops.

Facilities are basic but more than adequate for short stay, there is outdoor pot wash, drinking water tap, toilets are regularly topped up, lovely hot showers. Not the cleanest down to grass/mud being dragged in on shoes and flies attracted by the lights but can ask for anymore for the price.

You can hire a fire pit and buy logs, to keep cosy on a night, as there is no lighting you can see the stars.

Once the mist cleared, beautiful scenery.

    Disliked:

No dislikes, only suggestions I could make for host is could do with something to stand on getting out the shower, like wooden mat as mud /grass gets trekked in.

Suggestions for other campers, take a good torch, there is no lighting in the fields. Ideal for star gazing.
Can be wet/muddy take good waterproof shoes and flip flops for showers.
If you’re going to hire a fire pit, remember to pack some marshmallows.

The second field was less boggy, and the field was level.

    Disliked:

The field I was told was the entry point by the owner was seriously flooded, my car got stuck in the mud, then the toilets were disgusting, then once another camper showed us another entry into less flooded field we had to trek into the boggy field to get to the toilet and fresh water. My foot got infected as I had a cut in my ankle and the bog caused infection. It was horrendous! Fortunately we were there for one night on our way home to break up our very long journey.
At £19 a night this was a terrible price!

From the manager...

YEP, Difficult to know where to start with this one!!
Firstly I'm sorry about your infected foot, I suppose the lesson to be learned there is if you ever go camping again in the Great British countryside at the end of an extremely wet summer, maybe take some sensible wet weather footwear and a first aid kit!!
I'm not sure if the infection you suffered has clouded your judgement a little here but while I respect anyones right to an opinion there are so many inaccuracies in this review that need to be addressed.
Firstly, I haven't advised anybody to use the entrance into the wet field since mid July when that field became waterlogged after several weeks of heavy and persistent rain. We are lucky enough to have an adjoining field which is much drier which we have used since then. I have given some people the option to use a small area of the wet field close to the gate if they wanted to be closer to the toilets and showers but with the proviso not to stray away from the area close to the gate and the hedge and if they chose to ignore that advice they would inevitably get stuck. However my first recollection of speaking to you was when you drove on to the dry field.
The second inaccuracy, is that you didn't actually have to walk across the wet field to access a toilet and drinking water. There is a clearly marked water point by the gate in to the field and we hired a good quality portaloo with a sink, soap dispenser and hand towels so that people didn't have to walk so far just for the toilet. The only reason you would have to walk across that field would be for a shower and hot water.
You describe the toilets as disgusting, while this is a subjective opinion, I would still class this as inaccurate. I'm not sure what your expectations of a small campsite toilet and shower block are but judging from pretty much all other comments in reviews on this site and others who mention the toilet facilities do so in a positive manner. I would accept basic, and that some people don't like unisex but we work hard to ensure that these facilities are kept clean and are a pleasant environment to do what you need to do in there. Inevitably the floors became muddy with foot traffic from the wet field but even this was mopped several times a day during busy periods.
Finally the price, £16 per pitch plus £3 for an extra older child for a site with hot showers, flushing toilets, washing up facilities and amazing views..I'll leave that one there!
This has been an exceptionally wet and challenging summer but hopefully next season we will return to a more normal climate for the camping community.
Alan.
