General

  • Peaceful base to explore the Lake District
  • Sandy beach 200 metres away
  • Leisure complex with pool, Jacuzzi and sauna

It is common knowledge that there is more than enough to do in the lovely Lake District for holidaymakers of all tastes and sizes. But if your tastes also include lots to do on your campsite too, you'll probably want to spend quite a while at Silecroft Caravan Park.

Based near Whicham, Silecroft is in a nifty position to use as a base for Lake District explores, but will also keep all sizes busy with its first-rate onsite facilities: it has a purpose-built leisure complex with heated indoor pool and Jacuzzi as well as a kids' play area. A convenience store is to hand for essentials and a shop and pub are in the nearby village.

And another billy bonus for the park? It's about 200 metres from sandy Silecroft beach, set in a wildlife haven that's in a topping Lake District location for sandcastle-building skill improvement or for long walks along the seashore.

Really liked that they had a swimming pool and 2 hot tubs. The toilets were very nice too, they had the heating on in them so they were very warm and very clean. The showers are really good too lovely and warm and good water pressure.

    Disliked:

There were 2 things we didn't like and they were the wind and how much you had to pay for the washing facilities. I understand the wind isn't silecroft caravan parks fault.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, unfortunately as you mentioned we can not control the wind, but we will pass your comment regarding the washing facilities to the park to look at for the future.

Tidy pitch areas, poor camping facilities - not good value for money! 20/09/2016

    - Nice pitch with a good view
    - Grass well maintained
    - Location excellent as ever, beach on the doorstep

    Disliked:

    - Caravan customers seemed to be well cared for, camping facilities were not maintained
    - Dirty and dated toilets and showers with a few broken locks
    - Kitchen area was fine enough but washing up liquid and toilet paper were not refilled.
    - Not worth the £10 a night for a basic pitch

From the manager...

Sorry you did not enjoy your staff with us, we will pass your comments to our Park to review the facilities.

I liked it here. It was very peaceful at night, with only the sea and the wind to be heard. The site has good playground facilities for kids and my little boy clearly enjoyed himself. 200m from the fantastic pebble and sand (when the tide goes out, it goes out a loooong way) beach. Gorgeous sunsets to be seen from there, over the Isle of Man.

There is nothing else around. Cumbrian Way passes nearby, there's a pub in the village and Black Combe to climb, but that's it. It's 3.5 miles to the nearest proper shop, in Millom, so be prepared. If you want a peaceful retreat, it's pretty good.

Staff were friendly, helpful and enforced rules!

    Good electric hook up.

    Disliked:

Bins were overflowing a lot over the weekend.

The shower block wasn't the cleanest and make sure you take toilet roll!

The jacuzzi was great but I don't know how often the water is changed...

The pool was ok, even at £5 a time, but the floor around it worried me a lot. Stone floors get very slippy when wet and they're hard when a child's head hits it. The swimming pool room could do with an upgrade - my son cut a toe walking between the room and where the sauna is, as the join between the floors was bad. Looked a bit unloved in there, but still, we enjoyed using it.

An ok site with facilities that need an update. 13/08/2016

The pitch was nice and large with good electric hook up. The nearby beach was a lovely quiet place to visit.

    Disliked:

The shower facilities were very basic and only 2 of the 3 showers worked in the ladies and one of those had a dodgy lock on the door. The site is also quite a long way away from the lakes so we spent a lot of time driving to the spots we wanted to visit. Perhaps for a young family on a tight budget who just wants a beach and local walks it would be perfect.

Local attractions

Also next to Silecroft Caravan Park is Silecroft Golf Club, a nine-hole course in a scenic locale rated among the top in the region and adjacent to the Irish Sea; horse riding, fishing and watersports are all close by too.

Dalton Castle, a Grade I-listed fourteenth century tower now in the care of the National Trust is eight miles from Silecroft: have a morning here then go on to the dunes of the Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve or to canter or cycle around the Eskdale Valley 13 miles away.

If you'd like to take in the local scenery as far as your eyes can see – it's worth it – take the two-hour or so climb up Black Combe near Silecroft village, which has views on clear days towards Ireland, Scotland, Snowdon and the Isle of Man. Start from St Mary's Church in Whicham, for a more challenging route, from Beckside Farm on the A595.

More scaling, hill walking and looks across to other lands are of course available all over the Lakes, and if you'd prefer to float a boat the District's biggest lake Windermere is less than an hour's drive away.

Must see

  • South Lakes Wild Animal Park (7.8 miles)
  • Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (9.8 miles)
  • Lakeland Motor Museum (14.6 miles)
