  • Top-notch family holiday park on the edge of Silloth
  • Close to the Galloway Hills and Lake District National Park
  • Indoor pool, restaurant-bar and busy activity/entertainment programme
Off to explore the Lake District, the Scottish Borders or Hadrian's Wall – and want to stay at a holiday park with heaps to do on site for when you’re not out and about? Nearby Solway Holiday Park should fit the bill, as it's had several million pounds on updating its leisure facilities to make this 130-acre holiday park a highly sought-after place to stay on the stunning Solway Firth coast. It’s also located within walking distance of the Victorian seaside town of Silloth, in a handy spot for all sorts of outings on both sides of the England/Scotland border. That mix means you can really tailor your holiday to your own tastes, whether you’re planning to explore the scenery of the Lake District National Park and Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, hit the beach or focus your attentions on the activities available on site (or some combination of all of the above…) And those activities… well, there are lots and lots of them to fill your time with. The indoor pool, sports field and games arcade might be a place to start (all of these being free to use) while you consider which of the other activities you might like to join in with. Might it be aqua games, teddy bear hunts or pirates and princesses adventures for the younger kids, or archery, zorbing, axe throwing and bird of prey experiences for older guests? Head over to reception to find out the options and put your schedule together. It’s really worth finding some time for the entertainment too – there’s a packed programme of all sorts from kids’ shows through karaoke and bingo to live music from top-notch performers. Of course, all the practicalities are covered here too – the site has a launderette, a mini market and a restaurant/bar that’s open through the day for breakfasts, lunches, dinners and drinks.

What customers say

This holiday park offers a vast array of activities for families, with many praising the clean facilities, especially the new toilet and shower blocks. Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful. Popular amenities include the swimming pool, arcades, and on-site food options. However, some visitors noted issues with pitch conditions, particularly muddiness after rain, and occasional noise disturbances. Several reviews indicate the site is undergoing renovation, suggesting future improvements.

Electric grass pitch

Liked There is plenty to do with children on the site, arcades, classes at an additional cost and sport cages (tennis) but not much free space to have a kick about or fly a kite.

Disliked We had booked for a 4 night stay, when booking it asks what pitch size you want, this information is not passed onto the poor chap who assigns the pitches to the guests arriving. He had to drive around to find a pitch that was suitable for our tent size. On the website it states that there is a minimum of 3 metres between pitches, again not the case, the first pitch we had been given had about 1.5 metres between the tents. The 2nd pitch had about 2.5 meters (legal requirements is 3 minimum).
The swimming you are given an hour a day if you arrive in time to book this the day prior.
The facilities are ok and the domestic staff have their work cut out! 3 out of the 4 mornings going to the toilets people had been sick in multiple cubicles (on the floor) when talking to one of the domestic staff she felt sorry for the families that have to bring children into the toilets due to the conditions selfish people had left them in. We had a young child with us and I would go in to establish which toilet was safe for her to use.
They have a late night disco in the entertainment complex, please be warned that this music can be heard far away. Our pitch was about a 7 minute walk from the complex and it could still be heard at 3am.

Bring a long electric hook-up cable as the ports can be quite far away.

Electric grass pitch

Liked That there were quiet a few activities and it’s family friendly

Disliked The state of shower rooms, toilets, not regularly cleaned despite of no rain in the 3 days we camped, it should have been kept in a better state. There were no extra hooks inside the shower rooms to keep your stuff hanging and clothes and towels kept falling off the one peg inside the shower rooms.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Plenty of food/drink options on site.

Worth a walk into Silloth

Disliked The camping field needs some attention. Pitch very small. No where to sit outside. The pitch was scrub and stones.

Toilets and showers modern but cant cope with the amount of people using them. Despite the best efforts of staff trying to keep on top of the cleaning, they were often dirty. The shower drainage needs addressing as one morning everyone was ankle deep in water.

The holiday park is geared towards children with no entertainment geared towards adults.

People did respect the quiet time after 11pm, shame they didn't respect fellow campers by drowning everyone else's music out with theirs on full blast all day every day.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The site had lots of amenities, the fish shop was reasonably priced and quite tasty. Loved the fact that the kids could use the pool each day (but it was quite booked up as you can only book for the next day after 3pm. Shower and toilet blocks were reasonably clean (we were there mid august and the site was full so the cleaners had their work cut out for them. The guy who booked us in was really helpful, even lending us a hook up cable when ours didn't quite reach. During the day we noticed him driving round the site checking on everyone and keeping things in order. Bins were emptied frequently and everything about the actual site was amazing, we looked to extend our stay and even looked at booking for next year.

Disliked The reason I've marked the site so low and why we have decided not to return to this site is due to the night time noise. For the first couple of nights the noise wasn't too bad and everyone seemed to be in their tents/campers by about 10pm and the noise was kept at a minimal level. On the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights the noise was just ridiculous, mainly from adults drinking and playing music loudly. On the sunday night it sounded like a club was playing music right in the middle of the site until 5am and 2 camper vans behind us were out drinking and playing loud music until 4am. I did call the number to report the noise (I was alone with my kids and they were 4 adults drinking so wanted to avoid confrontation) and security said they would send someone out but this never happened.

I understand that everyone was on holiday having a good time but its not cool when its at the expense of others who have to be up early with kids the next day and have a long drive home. We were exhausted. I've never had a problem with noise, I can usually sleep through it or security will come round and sort issues if noise goes on past 12/1ish but this site just didn't really seem to care.

I ended up leaving a day early because we just couldn't face another sleepless night.

Local attractions

On the English side of the Firth, Solway guests can reach the north-western lakes of the Lake District National Park, day trips to Carlisle and the hills and stargazing of Northumberland National Park. On the Scottish side, you could hike the Galloway Hills, run away to Gretna or drive further afield to urban days out at Edinburgh or Glasgow. (To see it all at once, take a trip to championship Solway Golf Course where you can tee around to views of the Lakeland Fells, Galloway Hills and across to the Isle of Man.) Moseying towards Northumberland (stop off at Carlisle Castle and The Lanes shopping centre on the way), friends, Romans and countrymen can walk as much of the Hadrian’s Wall Path as they can manage: it’s the north of England’s most visited tourist attraction and most of it runs along the Solway Firth on its way to Northumberland. Happily for such a family-centred site, kiddish fun is all around Solway Holiday Park too: farm park Orton Grange, getting open-mouthed at the fish and other inhabitants at Lake District Coast Aquarium, or going on a hop around award-winning World of Beatrix Potter.
