  • Family-friendly Yorkshire Dales farm near the Dales Way
  • In southern Cumbria, a mile from the centre of Sedbergh
  • Walk to Sedbergh for dog-friendly pubs, cafés and eateries in 15 mins
There's something mightily tempting about staying on a working Dales farm with cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and goats. Farm and Fell Campsite is a peaceful farm site in scenic southern Cumbria, just 15 minutes' walk away from Sedbergh, where guests can get stuck into a number of dog-friendly pubs, cafés and family-friendly eateries. This site is something of a geographical oddity, being located within the borders of the Yorkshire Dales but outside the boundaries of Yorkshire. The surroundings have all the smashing scenery you'd expect from this national park location, with highlights including the nearby river Rawthey, miles of dry stone walls and views over the spectacular Howgill Fells. Walkers itching to get out and explore it all have footpaths (including the Dales Way) that start almost opposite the site entrance. Every pitch at Farm and Fell Campsite has its own firepit; hardwood logs, sticks and firelighters are available to purchase between 6pm and 8pm every evening when the farmer visits or feel free to request for them to be left at your pitch for your arrival. Farm activities like lambing, calf rearing and sheep sheering may be available (to be booked separately – mention you're interested on the booking form to learn more).

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: We arrived at tea time having driven from Sedbergh, which took about 10 minutes. There were no staff around and just a sign saying pick your pitch. The toilets consisted of a box with a toilet in and no hand washing facilities. The shower was a similar box. We stayed for approximately 10 minutes and left to stay in Dent. Would not return and would definitely not recommend as there is nothing to recommend.

Liked: Gorgeous setting for the camp with stunning views. Lovely clean site, toilet and shower block were also great. Owners coming round regularly selling firewood or giving out binbags for rubbish. 2 sheep kept wandering round visiting the pitches which was nice. Loved the little notes giving you directions to the river, town and the pigs. Various water points around the site too. We were lucky to have a clear night, the stars were fantastic due to low light pollution. Definitely recommend, great site. Lots of pitches but only a handful booked while we were there.

Liked: We found this site at the last minute as our original planned destination was full. The site is very well run, clean, relaxed, friendly and with more than adequate facilities including Elsen, water, toilets and free showers. The site owners also take care to come round every so often in the early evening to offer fire wood etc and all in all, it's really nice and relaxed. The pitches are also very large and plenty big enough for a van, a car in addition if required and still with ample space to sit out and have a fire. Excellent. We find it astounding that a limited few people whinge in the reviews about mud etc. What do they expect when camping on grass in the rain? That said, we were lucky and got perfect sun all day and there were loads of grassy, flat pitches with no mud issues whatsoever, the.majority with very nice views too. This is a great site, you can see how hard the owners have worked to make it a perfect stay and it's all very friendly, as are the owners and their staff when they come round. We booked and paid on Pitchup just as we arrived and the data hadn't yet made it through to the young lady who came round in the evening but everything was very relaxed and she just asked to see our receipt email. 4g reception, by the way, is also very good. We hope the oweners don't get too disheartened by the minority who whinge about nothing at all. They're doing a great job, so thanks very much for all your hard effort. It's really appreciated. Great location and lovely gentle 15 min walk into the town. Geoff & Beverley

Disliked: Nothing at all. If you want to parallel park on concrete or gravel, go to other sites and pay way more.

Local attractions

Guests at Farm and Fell Campsite have access to the Dales Way footpath within a few minutes' walk of base, opening up 80 miles of traffic-free trails, most of which run alongside local watercourses. Whether you head south to the Pennines or north to the Lakeland foothills, walking in this part of the world is always a very special experience. Sedbergh town centre (15 minutes' walk) is also close by, with places to stop for snacks and drinks and a couple of book shops (one of them very large) where you can pick up some holiday reading material. For more low-key local things to do, check out Farfield Mill five minutes' drive down the road, or set off on a round trip on the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway from Garsdale (20 minutes' drive). Into your sport? Try Killington Sailing Association's watersports centre (10 minutes) or the Lakeland Climbing Centre (30 minutes).
