  • Family-friendly Yorkshire Dales farm near the Dales Way
  • In southern Cumbria, a mile from the centre of Sedbergh
  • Walk to Sedbergh for dog-friendly pubs, cafés and eateries in 15 mins
There's something mightily tempting about staying on a working Dales farm with cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and goats. Farm and Fell Campsite is a peaceful farm site in scenic southern Cumbria, just 15 minutes' walk away from Sedbergh, where guests can get stuck into a number of dog-friendly pubs, cafés and family-friendly eateries. This site is something of a geographical oddity, being located within the borders of the Yorkshire Dales but outside the boundaries of Yorkshire. The surroundings have all the smashing scenery you'd expect from this national park location, with highlights including the nearby river Rawthey, miles of dry stone walls and views over the spectacular Howgill Fells. Walkers itching to get out and explore it all have footpaths (including the Dales Way) that start almost opposite the site entrance. Every pitch at Farm and Fell Campsite has its own firepit; hardwood logs, sticks and firelighters are available to purchase between 5pm and 6pm every evening when the farmer visits or feel free to request for them to be left at your pitch for your arrival. Farm activities like lambing, calf rearing and sheep sheering may be available (to be booked separately – mention you're interested on the booking form to learn more).

Liked: The campsite is situated in a beautiful place, very close to a river and its fields are well looked after. The owners and staff are amazingly kind, relaxed and helpful. My kids loved to feed the lambs and play with them. This campsite is very simple which allows you to connect with nature even better. We are allowed to make fire and the campsite provides lots and the fire pits as well. The highlight for my family was the opportunity to ride horses and ponies for the first time. My kids absolutely loved it. This campsite has a barn with some toys, a pool table and serves drinks and food (some times). We haven't tried the food as we were always out and used the campsite only to sleep. You can stay in a quieter area or you can choose the wood field if you like to stay up late. There are 2 shower units closer to the barn and you pay £3 per shower. It is very simple but it works. There is a sink with water in the middle of the first field where you can do your washing up. The campsite is about 1h away from windermere lake and allows you to book only for a night. We stayed there for 3 nights and we absolutely loved it.

Disliked: The only downside for me is that there is no way of telling if a pitch is taken in case you have a campervan or a motorhome and use it to travel whilst staying at the campsite. If you don't leave anything behind like we did (camping chairs and table to secure our place) it will be very certain that when you come back, your pitch has been taken by other campers. Apart from that we loved everything!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely pitches, lots of space. Loved the barn with music, bar and things for children to do. The animals and horse riding really was an added bonus. The toilets, portaloos and showers were always very clean. Showers were hot and had plenty of space so much easier for showering the kids off. Staff where all so friendly and ensured everyone was enjoying themselves and that the children where entertained. Logs brought to the pitch. Can’t wait to go back again.

Liked: View was nice and despite failings the people were friendly.

Disliked: Pitches we're not great as the field started to bog up a bit. Horses got free and we're running loose at half 5 in the morning.. Dangerous!. I bought some wood online a tenner a bag... They were £8 onsite, also asked for a fire pit and it never came! Left early as the site just wasn't finished. Sedbergh is a nice little village and the cafe does a great breakfast unlike the site which at 8:40 in the morning wasn't even looking like starting breakfast when the guy said they would be. Oh and the barn pub didn't have pumps and just had a variety of bottle and cans. Bottle of 330ml Stella was £2 which can't be sniffed at but I saw pumps on a picture and it was a bit of a let down, music was playing which was good.. no live music which we kinda hoped for. Thing is the site has great potential but not enough showers and they could do with cleaning the toilets more frequently. Oh and I don't think anyone checks who you are no one asked who I was or did any checks.

From the manager: Thank you, There were 300 people on site over the weekend, and the vast majority were return customers who reported having a great weekend. It rained for 2 days on a busy weekend, the entrance to the field got a little muddy. Out of 135 cars and campervans on site all weekend - none got stuck and required towing out. The vast majority of campers commented on how hot the (free) showers were, but a couple came and spoke to us when they couldn't figure out why they were cold and we explained how to use the tap/mixer valve in the shower to get the temperature they preferred after the person before them had left it set to cold. Breakfast on bank holiday weekends is served from 0900-1030hrs. There were signs around the site and our team routinely reiterate meal timings to everyone. 2 people called us on Saturday morning at 0530hrs (not you) and told us that there were 3 of our neighbours horses in the camp site. We'd checked the perimeter that evening during our final walk around to check noise and the gate was secure, but at some time in the early hours a camper has seen fit to remove the chain securing the gate and leave the gate open. The horses were returned to their field and the gate secured by 0540hrs. We never advertised live music or draught beer for this weekend. The reason we didn't was because occupancy in the May Bank Holidays is always relatively low, therefore we'd have to increase costs to make it viable and it would be unfair on the campers who didn't want live music. On the campsite we did notify campers that there was live music at the Bull Hotel on Sunday afternoon and many campers enjoyed it. When visitor footfall is modest, we also don't want to compete with businesses in the town who are battling for viability, we want to support them. Finally, toilet cleanliness. We check and clean the toilets every 2 hours. We can't be responsible for whoever used them immediately before you, but overall this weekend our team commented on how clean the campers managed the toilets, especially given the rain. I accept that we'll never satisfy everyone who visits our campsite. Our team work really hard to introduce children and families to farm animals, the countryside, freedom of open space and to keep costs as low as practically possible. That'll never change. If campers are looking for a site in straight lines with concrete roads and rules for every last detail - that isn't us. Sincerely, Brian

Was a great stay, had excellent facilities — would definitely go back.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Friendly vibe, easy access, got to feed lambs, lots of space, dog friendly, river nearby, friendly owners, not too noisy, fairly level, elsan point and pot wash, beautiful views, walking routes all round the area, close to Sedburgh and owners offer pickup and drop off though we didn’t use. Decent signal around camp, EE 5G mostly sometimes 4G.

Disliked: Only downside is the lack of facilities, there were only two in use though only had to queue once in the morning to use so wasn’t a huge issue though appears more are being constructed. They’re not fully covered overhead but they are well built and maintained, again we had a dry stay so not an issue for us. Could do with some more and a sink or hand sanitizer. Cost £2 per dog but not sure why, had to be on lead entire time due to livestock (absolutely fair enough) but seemed an odd thing to charge extra for. Not a dislike but it would be useful to have a phone number at the entrance, I wasn’t sure where/how to check in or pay and ended up booking on pitch up when I got there as forgot to bring cash. A site map would be useful on booking the reviews mentioned a bar etc but wasn’t sure where to find this

Local attractions

Guests at Farm and Fell Campsite have access to the Dales Way footpath within a few minutes' walk of base, opening up 80 miles of traffic-free trails, most of which run alongside local watercourses. Whether you head south to the Pennines or north to the Lakeland foothills, walking in this part of the world is always a very special experience. Sedbergh town centre (15 minutes' walk) is also close by, with places to stop for snacks and drinks and a couple of book shops (one of them very large) where you can pick up some holiday reading material. For more low-key local things to do, check out Farfield Mill five minutes' drive down the road, or set off on a round trip on the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway from Garsdale (20 minutes' drive). Into your sport? Try Killington Sailing Association's watersports centre (10 minutes) or the Lakeland Climbing Centre (30 minutes).
