  • Small family-run site overlooking open Lake District countryside
  • Five miles from boating, canoeing, yachting and more at Ullswater
  • Disposable barbecue points, grass play area and outdoor seating
A peaceful pod-based break surrounded by ancient fruit trees – what a sweet idea. The aptly-named Orchard Hideaways is a small, friendly rural site set in, yes, an apple orchard, with views over farmland and open countryside and Penrith within walking distance (or a five-minute car journey away). It's a rural setting, yes – but one that's easy to access, thanks to a handy location close to the M6. Dogs are welcome to join you on your hols here, and trot along with you on the trails that run through the surrounds. They’ll need to be on best behaviour on site though, so they don’t get into scraps with the bats, rabbits and hedgehogs that got here first... If you’re bringing kids (or energetic partners) along, there’s space for them to run around and play games in a large open grass area; alfresco meals can be on the agenda too thanks to the barbecue areas and picnic tables provided. Should the weather (or immediate hunger demands) not allow for such activities, it’s an easy amble to a couple of fast food outlets or a quick five-minute drive to the pubs and restaurants of Penrith (or a half-hour stroll if you prefer). Active sorts should find plenty to fill their Cumbria days – there’s a golf course just over the road, and as the site's just on the edge of the Lake District it’s a cinch to sort horse riding, mountain biking, climbing and canoeing as well as all sorts of hikes both gentle and muscle-testing.

Local attractions

It’s easy to pack your Penrith days with plenty of activity. For aquatic antics, plot a course to Pooley Bridge, 10 minutes’ drive away on Ullswater, where there’s a sailing centre, a yacht club, boat hire and the Ullswater Canoe Trail to follow. Those who’d rather stay dry can hurtle down the mountain bike trails at Whinlatter Forest Park (25 minutes’ drive), make their way along the high ropes course at Go Ape Grizedale (an hour) or sign up for archery, climbing and orienteering at Newlands Adventure Centre (half an hour). Hardy walkers might like to join the Coast To Coast Walking Route around 11 miles away at Shap, where there's a 12th-century abbey, or mount an assault on Skiddaw, half an hour away. Want to see below the surface? Head to Honister Slate Mine (45 minutes) for mine tours and a via ferrata climbing route. Dial the pace down a bit with more leisurely outings to Penrith Castle (five minutes), Askham Hall (10 minutes) and spectacular Appleby Castle (20 minutes).
