  • Peaceful Cumbria campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a nearby playground area, park and bookable swimming pool
It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields, with the Pennine Fells as its wild backdrop – and Lazonby Campsite is next to the local Lazonby Swimming Pool for easy access to dips as long as you book them in advance online. The river's right there if you want to fish (get a permit at Kirkoswald community shop or at the pool kiosk) and the northern Lakes are 15 miles away. Lazonby is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has a pub, a well-stocked supermarket (open daily with post office and ATM), two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald. Toilets and solar-powered showers are in the swimming pool buildings about 200 metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool. The pool is open daily (and subject to an entry fee) from the early May bank holiday until mid-September and is heated to 24ºC; lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/café selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

What customers say

This community-run site, situated by the River Eden, is praised for its friendly volunteers, clean facilities, and peaceful atmosphere. Families particularly appreciate the adjacent playground and the outdoor swimming pool. While many enjoyed the scenic location and proximity to walks, some found the facilities basic, a distance from pitches, and noted occasional issues with mud or noise. The pool access incurs an additional cost.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The gentleman (volunteer) who came around and checked the campsite (sometimes on a bike) was such a lovely man. Taking time to speak to everyone in each visit and make sure we were ok.
Campsite was as described.
Booked here as it was close to River Lune for our paddle boards.
Pitch was big enough for what we needed.
Walking distance to a pub and convenience store.
Option to book and pay to use a pool. We didn’t as we had our dog with us and I didn’t want to leave him alone.
Only wouldn’t stay again as wasn’t suitable for what we ideally need for paddle boards.

Disliked Access to the River was not as easy as I thought it would be from the site. Manageable though.
There is a community park next to the site which anyone can visit. On our first night a group of people had to be moved on by another camper for being extremely loud at around 1am waking most the site up. No issues on the second bight so hopefully not a regular occurrence.
It could get really busy when wanting to use the shower facilities due to sharing with people there to swim.
Couldn’t get any signal on O2 or Three.
Toilet/ shower facilities could be cleaner. A mop is pushed around by a volunteer and appreciate the floors get muddy from footfall but some floor areas in the loo/shower cubicles would benefit from a deeper clean.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Really compact little site, very family friendly. Next to a fabulous park and the community swimming pool. Facilities shared with the swimming pool and pot wash and showers lovely and hot.

Disliked The site must get quite boggy when wet and they've put straw down to try and help it be less of a mud bath but it just ends up a mud bath with muddy straw mixed in or the dry straw ends up covering everything.

Liked Community led and simple site.

Disliked If it were to rain heavy lots of vehicles would find it difficult to get back along the track easily. No mention of the very tight entrance when you book.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The site was located in beautiful surroundings right by the river. The playground was great for kids and the outdoor pool next door was even better! It was also quiet in the evening which was very much appreciated. There are also some lovely walks right from the campsite along the river.

Disliked Although the lido was great, the cost for a family of four was expensive. They should offer discounts for campers.

There was no phone signal or wifi at the site.

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass over the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct; have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic. The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car. Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has lots of shops, supermarkets and services; travel there also for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, cracking views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs. And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.
