Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I loved how cosy this little campsite was, it was so peaceful, the owner came to welcome us and made my child feel welcome telling her where she could go to play etc, we couldn’t believe how much facilities there was for the price, a full utility room which we didn’t eclectic as we’ve paid more more for just a Porta-loo on site, the location was beautiful and not far from the Lake District, there was no light pollution, it was tidy and peaceful. We will 1000% be back but for longer next time as we loved it so much, our favourite camp to date!

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike

Non-electric hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked: Stunning and unique place, Ive never quite seen a campsite like it. Nice and quiet. The glamping accomodation in the woods was really special, although I took the campervan option. A warm welcome by Andri, Tom and their dogs! Farmhouse kitchen offered toilets, shower, washing up facilities, a washing machine, microwave and the use of a fridge freezer. Plenty of wood to buy and firepits. Far too many sites these days are missing a trick by not using firepits and by not allowing fires. Its what campings all about. Very eco friendly with recycling bins. Tent field is pretty, level and surrounded by trees and an open field next door. Stunning sunsets. Penrith, Ullswater and plenty of heritage sites nearby. I'll be back with Alfie for sure. Pity I cant upload the photographs as Pitch Up websute says they are too small? 🙂‍↕️

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was small, flat and surrounded by trees and fields. Absolutely delightful. The walk along the lane to the toilets was lit with a string of lights that gave it a very romantic feel. It was also wonderful to have access to a fridge and freezer and microwave. The owners were extremely welcoming and even invited us to take our food over to theirs to put it on a bbq - so if you like to be social when you go camping this is your place! The fact that you can have firepits and wood can be bought adds even more to the magic of this spot. I can't comment on child friendliness because we didn't have children with us - there aren't any facilities specifically for children but it doesn't have any lakes or anything that could pose a risk, assuming you don't let your children run near the fire pits. I also didn't try to connect to the wifi so can't comment. We were trying to get away from it all....which is why we chose this spot. It is a huge advantage to be able to book for one night only.

Disliked: The communal space is a square room with the fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, one sink, a book case with some books and a table. Off this are two cubicles, one with a toilet and no sink, the other with a toilet, a tiny sink and a shower with a shower curtain. The description does say there are two toilets and a shower - it would be more accurate to say there is a toilet with a shower in the same cubicle and another toilet. Despite that, we always had access to a toilet when we needed one and to be honest, I only saw one person use the shower (which didn't appeal to me.) the facilities are in an outbuilding attached to the main house - there was one large sink for washing dishes in and for the people from the single toilet to wash their hands in too. We took our dirty dishes home. The facilities really need revamping and felt very grubby, but it doesn't claim to be 'posh' and in fact, might add to the charm for some. The owners had an impromtu 'get together' in the evening to which we were invited but were too tired to join with. It turned out to be very loud, and went on until 12.30am, despite the fact we texted earlier. We were reassured this was a one off and some of the other campers did join in and seemed to be having a great time - but several of us didn't and the bass from the music kept going until much later than 12.30 even though the music was turned down. I was told by someone else that it was extremely peaceful during the week though and I don't doubt that at all.

From the manager: I m so very happy to hear you won’t be visiting us again … music was turned off before 12 and yes there was chatter around the fire until 12.30 , when I received a txt from you and asked the group of mainly campers to disperse.. it wasn’t overly loud … life is for celebrating and living to the full … respectfully which is certainly what we do here … happy quiet camping to you ♥️

Liked: The quiet location. Lovely views. Picnic benches at each pitch and free fire pits with option to buy firewood there. Relaxed site with basic but more than very clean facilities with the added bonus of a kitchen to use with toaster, microwave and fridge freezer. The owners Andri and Tom are so friendly, welcoming and helpful. We will definitely be back.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

The ruins of 13th-century Brougham Castle (15 minutes’ drive) occupy a pretty spot on the banks of the River Eamont and have far-reaching views of the Eden Valley. An elegant and imposing façade is all that remains of Lowther Castle (15 minutes), built in the early 1800s. The gardens here include landscaped areas, wildflower meadows and woodland, as well as an adventure playground. Independent shops and cafés line the cobbled streets of the historic town of Penrith (20 minutes). The remains of a medieval fortress overlook Castle Park, where you can stroll among rose gardens or have a picnic on the lawn while the children let off some steam in the playground. Ullswater (20 minutes) is the second-largest lake in the Lake District. Explore its wooded banks on foot (there’s a spectacular trail following the eastern shore, from Howtown to Glenridding), hop on a cruise or hire a canoe or paddleboard from any of the waterfront outfits.
