Pitches

  • Organic family farm site overlooking fells
  • In the Yorkshire Dales surrounded by walking and cycling routes
  • Spacious pitches surrounded by peaceful wildflower meadows
Spacious and peaceful, Crake Trees Manor is an organic family farm site with views over the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It's 15 minutes' drive from the M6 and A66 and half an hour from Penrith, Cumbria. In the Westmorland Dales, just to the east of the Lake District National Park, Crake Trees Manor sits at the centre of the farm, 800 feet high up with spectacular views over the farm to the Eden Valley and the Pennines. The farm is in a wildlife haven and often has good stargazing under the clear, dark skies of Cumbria. The accommodation areas are on mown pathways in conservation grassland, with long grass and wildflowers all around. A short walk from the pitches gets you to the shower and toilet block, where individual wetrooms have underfloor heating, and the camp kitchen, which has large sinks, hot and fresh drinking water and a small gas stove. Designated vehicle parking is in the farm courtyard, with wheelbarrows to transport your kit. Please do not park by the pitches. This site does not allow campfires, but you are able to hire a firepit from the site (please do this when finalising your booking).

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its lovely location, peaceful atmosphere, and friendly, attentive hosts. Guests enjoyed the unique and clean facilities, including underfloor heating in showers. The on-site pizzas and farm animals, including piglets, were highlights for many. While most found the site well-run and an excellent base for walking, some mentioned occasional generator use affecting kettle operation and noted a lack of soap in toilets. Food pricing was at times inconsistent, though issues were addressed.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Location was superb, campsite owners were excellent, very friendly and interested in their customers; spent quite a bit of time chatting with them. Never camped in a meadow ablaze with flowers before, a great experience and a testament to their very eco-minded business. Great base for walking - the Orton Fells are just over a mile and half away. No wifi, but there are decent mobile signals. We don't really stay on campsites 24 hrs a day, but we spent 2/4 days on this one such were the peace and quiet and views. Oh, and the cat's real friendly too. Look forward to the next visit.

Disliked I wouldn't say that this is a dislike, more a wish list item: could have done with a fridge/freezer that worked all day to enable ice packs to freeze. But if that's the only negative I can find, then this is a very positive review.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Crake Trees Manor was a lovely stay we went for 3 nights August time, nice big field and not too busy, the shower block have lovely warm water and a sink and toilet in each, extra parking if you carry on driving down, washing up room and bins with thought out recycling separation. The staff were also attentive and friendly we had a lovely stay and would return.

Disliked The only thing with this campsite is location if you are wanting to venture out you have to drive fairly far and food wise there’s no electric hookup option which means perishable foods aren’t an option.
On reflection I would recommend walking to the pub down the road and Appleby is only a 15 minute drive where there’s a co op (this ofcoarse is not the campsites fault just something I would mention to future visitors)

Liked Great campsite, facilities are unique and high quality. Owners are lovely and promptly sorted an issue which arose with other campers. The local pub is lovely and only a short walk through the fields from the camp.

Disliked Only thing I would say is that there is no soap in the toilets but not a big problem!

Local attractions

By foot or bike, the farm has direct access to many waymarked footpaths. It’s adjacent to the Coast to Coast national trail and near the Westmorland Way and Lady Anne's Way hiking paths, with easy access to the circular cycling trails passing through the village too. For a drink, walk through the fields to the village's community pub. By car, take the scenic 50-minute drive to Alston, ending up in a famed market town so historical it’s appeared in both Oliver Twist and Jane Eyre, or drive around the peaceful villages and lakes nearer to the farm. In the Lake District, you could go wild swimming in Ullswater (around 35 minutes' drive) or at one of the outdoor swimming pools enroute to the lakeshore. To potter through a pretty urban centre, Kendal is 40 minutes away from Crake Trees Manor and has 12th-century ruins to roam around, as well as a natural history museum. Feel like pootling about another stately building? Lowther Castle and its gorgeous gardens are a 25-minute drive, while ambles around the banks of stunning Haweswater Reservoir are within reach in 30 if getting back to Lake District nature takes your fancy...
