  • Small Lake District campervan site at a three-acre smallholding
  • A 15-minute drive to Ravenglass; 45 minutes to Coniston Water
  • On the west coast, with direct access to a sandy beach
Lake District travellers – what if you could add a bit of coastal time to your break without even leaving the national park? If that sounds like a good plan, take your campervan or motorhome along to Captain’s House Campervans, right on a sandy beach at the western edge of the Lake District National Park. Being a little further from the motorway means this is a somewhat quieter part of the national park, but it’s still packed with lovely scenery. And that’s true of the site itself, which has distant views of Scafell Pike in one direction and sea views in the other – often with the added bonus of a spectacular sunset in the evening. That proximity to the beach also means you can easily get out there for a bit of fishing (black lugworms are available at low tide), some windsurfing or just a picnic and a paddle after a day of hiking. Owners Luke and Sarah are keen to keep their place nice and peaceful, so they’ve only got a small number of pitches, all of which have been landscaped to protect them from the coastal winds. Pitches all have easy access to electricity and water, and there’s access to grey/black water disposal and rubbish disposal facilities (please note there are no toilets though, so you’ll need to be self-sufficient on the bathroom front). Barbecues and campfires are permitted at most times, and you can pick up bits to eat from the treats stall (with honesty box) about 10 minutes’ walk away. For something more substantial, take the 10-minute drive to the nearest pub or the café in Bootle village. Please note that this site has weak 4G signal due to its rural location.

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: The site was situated within walking distance of the beach, with excellent views. The owner is very friendly and helpful. We were double booked for the second night, not owners fault generously made a space for us in his own garden. We will definitely return next time we are in the area.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Beautiful location right near the sea. Very quiet and amazing sunset.

Disliked: Grass needs cutting and generally a tidy up and certainly not the owners fault but was dog 🐕 poop at the front of our pitch

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: So glad you enjoyed our spot as much as we do. Hope you choose to visit again. Sorry about the 4G signal due to our rural location. Some service providers are better than others.

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Waking up with views of sea one side and farm and hills the other - all I could hear was birds and sheep / bliss. Walked our dogs in the vast empty beach, beautiful place

Disliked: Portaloo would have been handy 😊

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: So glad you loved our spot! We totally take your point about the Portaloo. We will be working on the area around the back of our tractor shed this Summer to finish levelling out the ground and path. This is the best spot, out of the wind. There used to be a council run toilet block right in our line of view but we are quite glad it washed away before our time!

Local attractions

The Lake District National Park is, of course, known as something of a walkers’ paradise – and this western corner is no exception. Some favourite local spots include Swinside Stone Circle (25 minutes’ drive), Hesk Fell, Stanley Ghyll Waterfall (both half an hour) and Hardknott Roman Fort & Thermae (35 minutes). You won’t have to give up on trips to some of the park’s well-known hotspots either, so don’t worry if you’ve got your heart set on trips to The Old Man of Coniston, Coniston Water or Scafell Pike (all within a 45-minute drive). Staying a little closer to the site, you may like to head up to Ravenglass (15 minutes) for a ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and a tour of Muncaster Castle, where you can visit the hawk and owl centre as well as exploring the house and gardens.
