  • Peaceful, remote site on a working farm on the Solway Coast
  • Silloth 15 minutes’ drive; Bassenthwaite Lake half an hour
  • About 100 metres from Allonby Beach; views as far as Skiddaw Mountain
If you live for long walks on the beach – perhaps accompanied by your four-legged companion, and maybe at sunset (which can be pretty spectacular along this stretch of the Solway Coast, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) – Old Kiln Farm, on a working farm about 100 metres from Allonby Beach, might well be the place for you. This peaceful, family-friendly site has far-reaching views over a dramatic landscape of intertidal flats and sand dunes to the west, and mossy lowlands and Skiddaw Mountain, in the Lake District, to the east. Oh, and the Scottish coastline and hills to the north. It feels pretty remote here – but you’re not completely cut off from the world: the coastal village of Allonby is less than five minutes’ drive away (if you fancy walking, it will take you about 20 minutes), with its convenience store, ice-cream parlour, fish and chip shop and a couple of pubs. There is also a bike-hire place in the village, so you can explore the coast on two wheels and get to places like Silloth in about 40 minutes (15 minutes by car). As you pedal along the promenade here, keep your eyes peeled for porpoises off the coast. Back at the site, get the barbecue or the campfire going, and settle down for an evening under the big Cumbrian skies. Amenities include a communal kitchen (with two gas burners, a sink and a range of crockery and cutlery) and a toilet block with showers. For an additional fee, site owners Vera and Joe also provide bedding.

Binsey camping pod (two person)

Liked: Stayed in Binsey Camping Pod. Wonderful welcome. Lovely pod. Bed was very comfortable. Perfect for couples. If like me you are travelling with a hairy snoring-champion friend whose feet make top n tailing impossible it’s fine, they’ll be comfy on a camp mat in the floor. Pod was heated, kettle, TV, torch, cooler, firepit and toilet outside, everything you need. Lovely peaceful surroundings, close enough to pubs and a cafe. Will definitely return, albeit with a fresher-socked companion.

Binsey camping pod (two person)

Liked: The view was amazing, friendly sheep, sunset was lush. The toilet block was a short walk as they usually are but they was a toilet for no1. Only during the night this was handy. Kitchen facilities although I wasn’t that prepared.

Disliked: Trying to locate the place, however I rang the number and the gentleman was very helpful and directed me

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything was brilliant. Hosts were very friendly and accommodating, even going to the extent of changing our stay to the pod due to the bad storm. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here, we were given our own space but the hosts were available if needed. Everything was so clean and tidy, kitchen area was great as well as the toilets being clean. We are planning on booking again already for August! Thank you

Binsey camping pod (two person)

Liked: What a fabulous and beautiful camping pod! We have been to a number of pods and this was by far one of our favourites. Super cosy and warm. There’s a small onsite kitchen which is perfect for cooking small meals. The facilities are clean and to a high standard. The host were fantastic and give information regarding the local village and good food spots. We will absolutely be booking another stay here!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Stayed in the Shepard’s hut the bed was very lovely and comfy. It was gated separately which allowed our dog to have a roam around. Owners were pleasant and very helpful , told us a-bit about the area as we hadn’t been before. Location was right near the sea quiet not much around but for what we wanted it was ideal, the stars at night time were unreal. Coffee, tea and sugar was supplied along with a cooler box and a heater which was very useful and a nice touch.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

On the edge of the Lake District, Cockermouth (20 minutes) is a lively market town famed as the birthplace of William Wordsworth. Visitors can learn all about this Romantic poet at the National Trust-run Wordsworth House and Garden, on the banks of the River Derwent, before heading to the ruins of the 12th-century castle. A leafy path skirts the western shore of Bassenthwaite Lake (half an hour), where you might spot assorted birdlife, including curlews and ospreys. The lake is also a popular destination for watersports enthusiasts, or you can visit the Lakes Distillery for a guided tour with tastings of locally made whisky, gin and vodka. Stretching along the River Eden, Carlisle (45 minutes) is dominated by a medieval castle. Check out the tower where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner in the mid-1500s and Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, with audiovisual displays on the regional infantry regiment.
