If you live for long walks on the beach – perhaps accompanied by your four-legged companion, and maybe at sunset (which can be pretty spectacular along this stretch of the Solway Coast, a designated National Landscape) – Old Kiln Farm, on a working farm about 100 metres from Allonby Beach, might well be the place for you. This peaceful, family-friendly site has far-reaching views over a dramatic landscape of intertidal flats and sand dunes to the west, and mossy lowlands and Skiddaw Mountain, in the Lake District, to the east. Oh, and the Scottish coastline and hills to the north. It feels pretty remote here – but you’re not completely cut off from the world: the coastal village of Allonby is less than five minutes’ drive away (if you fancy walking, it will take you about 20 minutes), with its convenience store, ice-cream parlour, fish and chip shop and a couple of pubs. There is also a bike-hire place in the village, so you can explore the coast on two wheels and get to places like Silloth in about 40 minutes (15 minutes by car). As you pedal along the promenade here, keep your eyes peeled for porpoises off the coast. Back at the site, get the barbecue or the campfire going (firepits are provided but you'll need to bring your own wood), and settle down for an evening under the big Cumbrian skies. Amenities include a communal kitchen (with two gas burners, a sink and a range of crockery and cutlery) and a toilet block with showers. For an additional fee, site owners Vera and Phil also provide bedding.

A aimé We had an amazing stay at Old Kiln Farm. The area itself was beautiful and clean and the Views were stunning. Upon Arrival we were immedietly welcomed by the owner who was super friendly and throughout our trip he was extremely helpful (even offering us a lift into Silloth to save the bus journey!). Amenities were clean and upkept with lots of information available.
The local pubs were great too!

The site was clean, tidy and well maintained, which made our stay very comfortable and relaxing. We really appreciated the warm hospitality and would happily stay here again.Highly recommended!

The well equipped shared kitchen had everything we needed, and we ate outside. The views are lovely. We've been to Allonby before and really enjoy this peaceful setting.

A aimé Stunning place for a smaller site, lovely for a peaceful rest. location is perfect. Village and coastal walks are perfect. Very clean and accessible.. owners are lovely, welcoming and very accommodating. You can basically walk in with nothing and they have everything you need (except the tent) we was in a campervan, a family turned up to stay in the pod and there was tents too.

On the edge of the Lake District, Cockermouth (20 minutes) is a lively market town famed as the birthplace of William Wordsworth. Visitors can learn all about this Romantic poet at the National Trust-run Wordsworth House and Garden, on the banks of the River Derwent, before heading to the ruins of the 12th-century castle. A leafy path skirts the western shore of Bassenthwaite Lake (half an hour), where you might spot assorted birdlife, including curlews and ospreys. The lake is also a popular destination for watersports enthusiasts, or you can visit the Lakes Distillery for a guided tour with tastings of locally made whisky, gin and vodka. Stretching along the River Eden, Carlisle (45 minutes) is dominated by a medieval castle. Check out the tower where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner in the mid-1500s and Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, with audiovisual displays on the regional infantry regiment.
