  • Family-friendly site with views of a Victorian railway viaduct
  • Three miles from Kirkby Stephen; Ullswater 40 minutes' drive
  • Direct access to the gorgeous Smardale Gill Nature Reserve
Viaduct View is a family-run pop-up campsite tucked away in the quiet hamlet of Smardale in the Cumbrian countryside. Overlooked by an impressive Victorian viaduct (part of the famously scenic Settle to Carlisle railway line), this peaceful open field is surrounded by grasslands, with grazing sheep and cows as neighbours. The site is easily accessible from the road and, while feeling remote, is just three miles from the market town of Kirkby Stephen, where there are plenty of shops, bars and takeaways for those who want to enjoy a meal out. Wanders from the site are very varied too, with walks available in Smardale Gill Nature Reserve just next door, as well as easy access to the well-known coast-to-coast route that runs from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay. Scandal Beck, a peaceful stream, runs just by the campsite too, and the site's location on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park means that you can access other activities like fishing or wild swimming in no time. Whatever you get up to do during your stay, it should be mentioned that these views offer up an excellent backdrop for an evening spent around a campfire, and you're welcome to light up a barbecue (logs and kindling are sold on site). Facilities include toilet blocks, baby changing facilities, running water and bins for waste disposal.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great location. Easy access. Toilets were super clean.

Disliked: Would have been nice to have hot water in the toilets - and a shower, but for a short stay it was perfect.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The view of the viaduct was amazing, luckily the weather stayed nice for our one night stay here. The toilet facilities were clean and tidy which is rare from a campsite in the sticks. Would definitely recommend to friends and family and will be coming back again very soon before the colder months come.

Disliked: The only thing we disliked was that there was no fire logs. It did say on the booking confirmation that there would be logs to purchase on site but unfortunately there wasn’t.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: When we first rocked up no one was there. And was a bit apprehensive as the toilet block looked like a murder unit. Might be because it was a bit spooky all by ourselves. Saying that was pleasantly suprised as inside the unit it was super clean well maintained and had extra items in for cleaning. Was a lovely site. Would say needs to be better sign posted as we drove past and ended up up the most white knuckle road I've been on in a while. So if you are going follow to the post code which brings you to the nature reserve. Follow the road up and it's the field on the left just before the Ford. As others have said the grass was long, so wet feet will happen. It would have been nice if perhaps the middle of the field had been mowed but that's not really much of an issue to be honest. My kids enjoyed it was a lovely site and will return. We never saw anyone for the three days so maybe a daily visit would be good. And bring your own firewood as wasn't any to buy. But again if you know this in advance this isn't an issue. Very good value for money and amenities better than expected. Also make sure you do wait up to see the stars as it was an amazing view with no light pollution.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The campsite has nice views of the river and the viaduct.

Disliked: We didn’t realise when booking that large groups were allowed. We pitched up and a couple of hours later we were surrounded by a group of around 20-30 people a lot of them young children. This group were all very loud and the children were running riot around the campground. We decided to pack the awning away and move pitch further down the field. It was quieter but we could still hear the children screaming and running around in to the early hours, they were given bright torches which they were shining in people’s tents. The adults didn’t seem to care that they were upsetting all the other campers. We booked for two nights but decided to leave the next day. It absolutely baffles me that this campsite charges £10 for an extra dog for the weekend and a family of up to 6 people pay less than a couple with 2 dogs who are not using any of the facilities.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Location

Disliked: Unfortunately I can't recommend this site, my stay was ruined by a large group of families probably about 8 car loads including lots of kids who took over the site and made a lot of noise until late, there was no warden and no signal to call the number given, I left early next day so missed one more night there
