  • Small, quiet and friendly farm site with spectacular views
  • Lots of room and spacious pitches
  • Several walks direct from the farm including onto the Howgill Fells
For splendid walks among grazing animals, and nights gazing up at big open skies, Low Greenside Farm is an excellent bet for an outdoorsy break of the old-school variety. This small, quiet and friendly site is on a sheep farm in a level field, with spectacular Cumbria countryside views in all directions: the owners say it's 'camping as it used to be', with spacious pitches set around the edge of a large field. There are assorted hill and valley hikes from the site, where up-to-date info is on hand to help you pick places to walk, eat and visit, as well as sorting countryside events and day trip ideas. There's direct access onto the Howgill Fells for long walks, where sheep and ponies will keep you company; the Lakes, the Dales and the lovely Eden Valley are all close by for days out. Campfires are allowed in the hearths provided with logs available to purchase at the farm, and guests can also blaze up a barbecue on site. Ravenstonedale village – a five-minute walk from the farm – has two country pubs with riverside gardens, both serving food and real ales. For foodie supplies you might also want to check out the nearby farmers’ market, or drive over to one of the surrounding towns and villages.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Spacious pitches with incredible facilities and gorgeous views! There were lovely walks straight from the campsite and some lovely pubs within walking distance. A great middle point between the 3 national parks.

From the manager: Thank you for your very kind review - I'm so pleased that you got out for some of the Nine Great Walks from Low Greenside (our printed guide for walks straight from the campsite) and got to enjoy the pubs in the village. Spacious pitches and great facilities are what we strive to provide so I'm so pleased you appreciated them. Whilst we can't take credit for the wonderful views here, we we appreciate them as much as all our guests :)

Looking forward to staying again :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Spacious pitches. The hosts ar lovely and can't do enough for you. I love the fact, that's it's an eco site. There's a fridge , kettle, charging point in the entrance to the showers. It's a Fantastic base for walking. The Pub is just a 5 Min stroll, serving amazing food (dog friendly too). The staff are fab and make you feel so welcome. We will definitely be returning.

Disliked It is quite dark, so make sure you have a torch handy. Other than that, there's not much to dislike.

From the manager: Hi Miriam. Thank you for your review. It's great to hear that the touches we put in place to be eco-conscious yet still provide all the amenities you need are appreciated. It's also great advice to other guests looking to book to bring a torch. As we're in a Dark Sky Reserve, we intentionally keep the whole camping field as dark as possible for the best stargazing prospects. The latest photos on our social media of the shooting stars and Venus were taken when you were staying with us so hopefully you spotted a few astro phenomena too whilst here.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a lovely review and for your kind comments about our welcome and cleanliness. We really try hard to ensure that everyone gets a warm welcome and the opportunity to ask anything they need to about the site before they set up. We're super proud of our facilities too and probably clean them farrr more often than they really need but we know it's appreciated so it's definitely worth it. Hope to see you again soon.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked It was a beautifully located campsite with superb views and choice of where you want to pitch up. The facilities were so clean and environmentally friendly and it truly was such a lovely campsite to stay at. The fact there was a firepit by every tent spot was such a nice touch and really easy to get the wood and grill from the hosts. The lady who showed us round was lovely and she told us off a walking spot nearby that was absolutely beautiful (smardale) we went to the viaduct and would 100% recommend really close by! Would absolutely go again we had a great time, thank you!

From the manager: Thank you for mentioning our lovely location and one of the Nine Great Walks from Low Greenside (our printed guide to walks from your tent). It's such a gorgeous area to visit - and there are no crowds and the roads are quiet!
So glad you enjoyed it and we do hope to see you again.

Local attractions

There are plenty of interesting local walks and bike rides in the region – several of which start at the farm gate – with refreshments to be had at pubs and cafés en route. The Howgill Fells are a few minutes' stroll up the lane. There's excellent access to both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, with the equally scenic Eden Valley another option for those looking to avoid the crowds. Close to the site, you can go pony trekking or trout fishing – catch one and barbecue it later (the trout, not the pony...) Ravenstonedale village has a playground, public tennis court, nine and 18-hole golf course and a small art gallery to take in. The market towns of Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Sedbergh are all within hiking distance. For some food and tipples to finish the day with back at base, head to Hawes (40 minutes' drive) for cheese from the Wensleydale Creamery and craft beers from the Yorkshire Dales Brewery.
