  • Small, dog-friendly lakeside pitches on a Cumbria farm
  • Half an hour’s drive from Windermere; 25 minutes from Sedbergh
  • On-site tearoom and farm shop open Thursday-Sunday
Whether you're planning to wander around Windermere or stretch your legs exploring the Yorkshire Dales, it's a fine idea to spend a night (or several) on the lakeside pitches at Kitridding Lake. Having a base by the lake with parking available next to the pitches is very handy indeed – as is the central Cumbria location… Look to the Lake District for fells, lakes, Beatrix Potter attractions, historical sites and hikes of all sorts – Windermere is half an hour’s drive away from Kitridding Lake. That’s to the west. To the east, things are just as spectacular, with the Yorkshire Dales National Park’s hills, waterfalls and walks, cafés, pubs and shops around Sedbergh within 25 minutes’ drive of the site. Dogs are happily accommodated at this central Cumbria getaway too. The facilities – not for the furry kind, but the humans – include portable toilets, running spring water and easy access to parking on the pitches from the hard-surfaced road that circles the entire lake. The on-site farm shop and tearoom open their doors Thursday to Sunday from 9.30am to 4pm, so guests can get their paws on home-reared meat, handmade sausages and burgers, homemade pies and other locally-sourced foodie treats, as well as other products and gifts. The tearoom’s recipes are all about showcasing the farm’s products through weekly specials and a selection of takeaway food (top picks include the Kitridding breakfast and Sunday dinners). When you’re out and about instead, Kirkby Lonsdale has pubs, cafés and shops 10 minutes’ drive away. The larger market town of Kendal (25 minutes’ drive) has all the typical high street shops, supermarkets and restaurants too. As for the closest pub, that’s in Lupton, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Northwest to Windermere: when you set off in that direction, you might want to alight on the arts and crafts house of Blackwell (35 minutes’ drive), the busy town of Bowness-on-Windermere (35 minutes) with The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction or take a little wander around the Victorian country park of Fell Foot (half a hour) at the south of the lake. In the opposite direction – eastwards -–the Yorkshire Dales has an attractive selection of trails. There’s the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (20 minutes), which runs for four and a half miles around stunning waterfalls, or the climb up to Ingleborough (25 minutes) mountain, to begin with. Those wanting to be wowed can go and take a look at the huge Ribblehead Viaduct (half an hour), with its impressive 24 arches, or perhaps Sizergh (20 minutes), a National Trust site with a medieval house and estate.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful lake, surrounded by farms, cows and sheeps . There were 3 toilets -no showers, we also had access to fresh water-did not use this to drink, on the side there was also small restaurant and small farm shop. Some oarts of the lake were quiet levelled up some were on small hill. Owners were very nice. When we came we have been told it was their first weekend of opening. Nice place to go for walks . Absolutely coming back there and fully recommended to anyone .

Liked: We were the first ever campers to pitch up in this beautiful little spot. A quiet field with a lake we could pitch up right next to! The farmshop staff were lovely and helpful and the food in the cafe was delicious. Plenty of things nearby for young children to do - we particularly liked the maize maze, about a 15min drive from the site. My girls absolutely loved our stay here and have asked to go back.
