Stunning winter days

  • Adults-only touring site with pretty fell views in the Lake District
  • Keswick five minutes' drive; Honister Slate Mine half an hour
  • Fresh eggs and milk sold on site; local shop and pub 10 minutes’ walk
With a spectacular backdrop of lakeland fells such as Blencathra, Skiddaw and Latrigg, The Willows is a gorgeous spot for adults-only caravan or campervan holidays in the Lake District National Park. Set between Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake (about five minutes’ drive to either), this farm site is just outside the village of Braithwaite (10 minutes’ walk), and also five minutes’ drive from the cafés and galleries of Keswick (easily accessed via the A66). On site, you can buy essentials such as free-range eggs, fresh milk, butter and a selection of dairy produce. Most other basics (and stuff for barbecues) can be found at the local shop (10 minutes’ walk), which is open seven days a week. There’s a pub and a tearoom in Braithwaite too. The rural setting of The Willows combines with modern amenities in the wooden shower block to make your stay both convenient and peaceful. Dogs are more than welcome, and you can stretch your legs (or paws) on walking trails accessed right from the pitches. Please just keep your dogs on leads around the site as there are farm animals in the vicinity.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The location , just a 10 minute drive into keswick, the size of this touring park - not too big , and the electric hook up & water on each pitch made life easy.
The toilets & shower facilities are very modern lovely & clean & there are even toiletries provided - shower gels, soaps etc - the showers were just the right temperature , a lot of thought has gone into making this site comfortable & mostly practical & it is a great base for exploring the area.
Finally the owner / manager lady is very hardworking & friendly and knows the area well useful for ideas on places to visit 😀
We will be back.

Disliked Only one problem really - the pot washing facilities are 'inside' one of the shower / toilet rooms ( 3 of these in same block) and that means if somebody is using the loo or shower the outer door is locked & you have to wait to wash up.... almost every sight I have stayed on put the 'pot washing ' area outside under a shelter ... 🤔

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Mark,

Thanks so much for your review, we are currently working on the pot wash and hopefully come Autumn the middle toilet is being made into a pot wash area and small drying area , but I will see if we can get a make-shift outside sink sorted in the meanwhile. It's the first time anyone has commented on it but if it's something I need to change I definitely will. Thanks again for staying and your feedback is really appreciated as it all helps to make it better, thank you

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Great pitch, EHU with water, level hard standing, great views and fantastic weather.

Disliked Though the pitches were a little too close together, felt a little too close for comfort at times.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review Denis, I am sorry you felt you were too close to the other pitches, sometimes inevitably if everyone aims for the same side of the site it can happen, I hope to see you again,

Lindsey

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The friendliest lady who gave directions and was so nice but didn’t tell me who she was, I shall presume and was the owner. The facilities were really clean.

Disliked The waste looked awkward so I didn’t use it.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Helen,

Sorry that you didnt like the waste area, I have since you stayed added a permanent hosepipe next to the lid you lift up which is light enough to lift with one finger to make it better following another review that mentioned it would be a good idea.

Thanks again for staying

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked First come first served for pitch allocation
It was too busy so well spread out
Lovely showers, toilets and washing facilities
Added touches like towels, washing up liquid etc.
WiFi on site

Disliked Only glass is recycled

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Morning Lee thanks for your lovely review, the recycling situation is under review we had limited options when we started the season but I am told that the Cumberland council are now taking new customers on again so hopefully we will be able to switch to them as they do offer more recycling options, lindsey

Local attractions

When visiting Keswick (five minutes’ drive), be sure to stop at the Derwent Pencil Museum, which explores the history of this humble writing tool and other art materials – with a wide range available at the on-site shop. Afterwards, make your way to the shore of Derwentwater for a canoeing or rowing expedition, or a cruise around the lake. Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes) is the place for a meditative walk with an alpaca, a falconry experience or a meet-and-greet session with meerkats, lemurs or tapirs. It’s also possible to witness feeding sessions with lynx and red pandas, and to take part in assorted craft workshops. Among the activities at Honister Slate Mine (half an hour), in the foothills of Dale Head, are underground tours of the mine (including one with a spooky haunted theme, and another where you get to scale the walls of the cavern) and thrilling outdoor pursuits such as a via ferrata climbing route and the null Bridge, high above the Borrowdale Valley.
