  • Well-maintained Lake District site half a kilometre from Derwentwater
  • A five-minute drive from Catbells; 15 minutes from Whinlatter Forest
  • Pub with a beer garden a short walk away; adventure centre nearby
Mountain biking, high ropes, quad biking and boating… whatever your calling, you’ll be well placed for mucking into all sorts of outdoor activities from Newlands Valley Campsite in the Lake District National Park. Half a kilometre from Derwentwater and 10 minutes’ drive away from Keswick, this family-run pop-up site will plant you firmly near to fells, lakes and forests. You’ll be able to channel your energy into the outdoors from here, as there’s an activity centre five minutes’ drive away (climbing, archery and kayaking included). The nearest fell is five minutes’ drive away for a challenging hike and there are more trails including mountain biking or cycling courses around Whinlatter Forest Park, 15 minutes’ drive away. When you’re ready to give your feet a rest and refill with some tasty food, the local pub is 10 minutes’ walk away up the hill – it’s quite the cosy spot with a beer garden so you can stay in the fresh air if you please while you indulge in a homecooked meal. As a pop-up site, the facilities on site simply take care of the essentials – as you’ll likely be a little mucky from your adventures out and about, there are showers, toilets and clean water where you can freshen up.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The showers, toilets, cleaning facilities etc were all well maintained and nice to use. Location for many walks was perfect and the vibe on site was friendly. Dog and child friendly too. This was my second visit here and will definitely be back for more trips 👍

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Perfect location, surrounded by stunning views. 5 minute walk from the closest pub and about a 50 minute walk to Keswick centre

Disliked: We had to be towed out on the first day due to the grass getting so wet but the staff were very helpful then on hand with a quad bike to help unload/ load gear to your camp. Toilets were similar to a festival site, smelly and not great but useable.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Easy access to local pub for food and drink, on-site facilities for washing up, showers and water facilities. Friendly owners who were knowledgable of area and helped take camping gear to near by field on quads as weather made it hard to access with personal vehicles.

Disliked: Rain

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: friendly & helpul staff area / views pub 5 min walk email sent day before travel offering chance to cancel due to weather fire pits allowed no turn down noise requests open fields not crammed showers and toilets were suprisingly good after reading previous complaints had far worse free trip in trailer with all stuff there and back to car.

Disliked: weather. fields to far from showers / toilets ( poss toilets in other fields) miles from any shops - could sell essentials like bread and milk ?? possible electric charge points ?? cost ? slightly expensive for facilities tbh but no issue really just for other people. very very very muddy and wet.

Liked: The location is pretty perfect close to several walks and only a 5-10 minute drive to keswick, they let you have campfires, they don't mind pets, pretty much whatever you want without making a disturbance, the hosts are really nice too. It's a basic pop up site which is what i like.

Disliked: Toilets can get a little whiffy.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Campsite owners are extremely friendly and couldn’t do enough for you, all the basic amenities are there and the food stop that comes is delicious! The campsite location is great and right next to catbells, skiddaw etc if you fancy hiking! Also so close to Derwentwater where you can take the boat across to Keswick, if not it’s only a ten minute drive.

Disliked: Extremely muddy boggy field, nobody’s fault as it’s purely down to the rain.

Local attractions

Those of you who are ready and willing to get a little mucky (go on – you’re on holiday) might want to get started with some quad biking or Segwaying 10 minutes’ walk from the site. You’ve got a few ways to get stuck in at Whinlatter Forest Park (15 minutes' drive) – aside from hiking, cycling and mountain biking, there are zipwires and treetop obstacles to tackle on the Go Ape course. That’s not all in the way of outdoorsy pursuits. The local adventure centre (five minutes) runs kayaking and canoeing, scrambling, rock climbing, archery and another high ropes course. If you like a challenge, Catbells (five minutes) is a fell with a six-kilometre hike. For a watersports day, nearby Nichol End Marine (five minutes) offer a 20% discount for all campsite guests (just ask the site for the discount code after you've booked your pitch). Otherwise, take a more leisurely route (or a boat, if you want to rest your feet) around Derwentwater (10 minutes’ walk). Aira Force Waterfall (half an hour’s drive) has more spectacular water scenery. For more of those chilled-out activities, be sure to call by the Lake District Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Castlerigg Stone Circle (15 minutes), a Neolithic stone circle.
