  • Spacious, simple pitches at a sports club 15 minutes' walk from Kendal
  • On the edge of the Lake District, 20 minutes' drive from Windermere
  • Access to clubhouse for bathroom facilities
Whether you’re a keen fan of the oval-ball game or not, the spacious, simple pitches in the grounds of Kendal Rugby Club make a great place for an affordable break in Kendal. Stay here and you’ll be in the grounds of a sports club that’s 15 minutes’ walk from the town centre and train station – and you’ll be supporting a community club that’s been running since the 19th century. The Cumbria club’s pride and joy is its smart clubhouse, which has a kiosk that serves hot and cold food, alcohol and soft drinks daily. A well-equipped gym, along with toilets and hot showers, are also available to all guests. Other facilities include a playground for kids under 16 and a free wifi connection. This is a fine base not only for strolls around the market town of Kendal but also looking beyond to more rural pursuits. The town that calls itself ‘the southern gateway to the Lakes’ is indeed on the edge of the Lake District National Park, around 20 minutes’ drive from Windermere (for boat trips, windsurfing or canoeing) and 45 minutes from Claife Heights. Between the walks, the bike rides, the wildlife spotting, the watersports and the family-friendly attractions, there’s plenty to keep you busy around the Lake District; if that’s not quite enough, head east instead to reach the Yorkshire Dales National Park with around half an hour’s drive. Please note that unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this site, and there's a no-glass policy in place for everyone's safety.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful scenery, the site is overlooked by hills and is about a 10 minute walk into Kendal. Supermarkets and garages close by and good breakfast on site. Really lovely customer service and the field is well maintained. No issues with any other campers, but the staff were clear about the arrangements for security if we had needed them.

Disliked: The only negative was the communal showers (think school changing rooms). However they had hot water, were regularly cleaned and had plenty space to hang your belongings.

Liked: Every thing was wonderful. Really enjoyed my stay the staff was brilliant. The toilets and shower rooms was nice and clean. The food bar was great and food was fantastic. We will be going back next year. But will be staying longer this time. We got there late and the staff was there to help us with everything we needed and got the key for the toilets and shower. Even got a cup of tea. Can say enough for everything was excellent

Disliked: Nothing to dislike everything great

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Easy relaxed check in and rules. No set pitches just a field to do as you please. Close to morrisons and town centre.

Disliked: We didn’t realise showers are shared with no privacy at all. Hot water took a very long time to come through and even then it wasn’t that hot (mens). £5 deposit needed for fobs to access the toilets / showers. (Don’t forget them in your tent).

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Friendly welcome, clean facilities. We were able to charge devices in the stands of the rugby pitch. Able to pick up the wifi okay where we were pitched.

Disliked: Nothing in particular, but it was quite a long walk from the town centre. Handy for Morrisons supermarket.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great facilities, well kept camping area. Friendly and helpful staff. Electric sockets on rugby stand and in changing rooms we were able to use. Very modern bar and toilet areas upstairs in the Club House when we went for a drink. In walking distance to Kendal and supermarkets. Would recommend.

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike!

Local attractions

You may not be up for a full rugby match while you’re here, but there are plenty more ways to get active in the local area. The greens of Kendal Golf Club are five minutes’ drive away, or you could head to the adventure park at Brockhole on Windermere (20 minutes’ drive) for ziplines, archery and kayaking. While you’re at Windermere, try out sailing and other watersports – or just take a ride on an old steamer if you need something less energetic. Being on the edge of the Lake District there are of course lots of places to get out for a walk around here, but there’s also the option of seeing the scenery at a slower pace on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (half an hour). Other days out nearby might take you to the imposing surrounds of Sizergh Castle (15 minutes), to learn about a former famous resident at World of Beatrix Potter (20 minutes) or to spot fish and other animals from around the world at Lake Aquarium (half an hour). If you don’t have kids in tow, you may also like to try a tour of Hawkshead Brewery (10 minutes).
