General

  • Working farm with spectacular views in the Lake District National Park
  • Meet and help feed the farm animals
  • Access Hadrian's Cycleway directly from the site

What a stunner... Hall Carleton Farm is a family site set on a working farm on the Irish Sea coast of Cumbria in the Lake District National Park – and with spectacular views across the fells from the farm and an orchard facing west towards the dunes on Drigg beach.

As it's a working farm, your small critters will get to meet and coo over animals of all sorts, and are welcome to feed the site's resident and free-roaming chickens and cockerels too. There's plenty of space to kick a ball around in if energy levels are still raised after all this; grownups, meanwhile, may care to retreat to a quiet spot for some on-site fishing...

The farm is around a mile from the village of Holmrook, a couple of miles from the sea at Drigg, and with direct access to Hadrian's Cycleway or National Route 72, 174 miles of trail running alongside the entire Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. Fishing on the River Irt, swimming and boating at Wastwater and climbing at Great Gable and Scafell Pike are within easy day trip distance.

Amenities include a water tap, a chemical disposal point and a private shower room with electric shower, sink and toilet.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Bookings must not be for more than 27 consecutive nights.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site only allows dogs up to 30kg.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 25 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Nice quiet spot and easy walking distance from Ravenglass, shop also only 5 min drive away and you're sort of away from the busy parts of the Lake District. Interesting area and some beautiful walks (Muncaster fell) too! Perfect small campsite, great value for money, highly recommend it.

    Disliked:

No problem sharing 1 shower and 1 toilet but would have been better if they were in separate places though.

The best camping trip for us to date! 01/09/2018

We visited as a family of 4 with a 5 year old and 12 year old boys. The camp site was small and well kept and the owners were very helpful when we arrived. It is based on a working farm, the children loved watching the farmers moving the cows to different fields and feeding them. There were a couple of farm dogs which came to greet them in the morning also a chicken and a duck, visitors were also allowed to bring their dogs too!

Our pitch had a gorgeous view of the mountains where we enjoyed a campfire at the night. I would definately stay again its a bit of a drive to the mountains but the scenery was amazing along the way, its a short drive to seacale and ravenglass where the ravenglass miniature steam railway is based this is well worth a visit and when you buy tickets they last for 24 hours so we went twice. There is a cash machine at the spar garage near drigg and there is a coop and mcolls in seascale.

There was one bathroom which looked unfinished but it worked and you had to wait in line if busy and there was a tap outside of it for washing the pots. When we arrived the owner said there was also one in the farmhouse that could be used if we had to wait too long. We personally didn't find it a problem.

Very quiet. Nice surroundings. We were lucky to be there on our own.
Owners were not on site on the dates we stayed but they gave us notice of this and left an information sheet for us (unfortunately the weather got it and we could only read part of it)

    Disliked:

Pitch up site said there was a play area and fishing on site but we couldn't locate it.
Toilet and shower together and was ok for us but would have been more challenging if others on site.

Great location near to Scarfell Pike and on the coast. It was very helpful to be able to park the car safely in the yard area and the availability of the fridge freezer was useful too.

    Disliked:

The washing up bowl, toilet and shower were all in the same shed and so there was a lot of queueing; an improvement would be to add an extra toilet or at least to separate the toilet and shower.

Owners, site, size of site, area

    Disliked:

Toilet/ shower, awful, nowhere to get dried and dressed. Door doesn't close properly, birds in toilet/ shower room, holes in door filled with toilet roll, cobwebs everywhere, very cold , no footpath to toilet, disgusting, dirty pond and bird bath right outside toilet door

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments.

I am pleased that you rated the site, its location, the customer service, child friendliness and the quality of the accommodation 10/10.

To date, the site has had around 500 people stay and they have all been complimentary about the shower facilities.

This is a brand new and clean bathroom suite, fitting for a camping experience in the country side. The shower facilities are stand alone and the door does have a lock on it for privacy when changing.

People love the wildlife and children especially enjoy the pond life in our small garden area. We have frogs and the birds drink from the pond water.

The camp site is small and you indicated that you would recommend the site to a friend and return.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Angela and Andrew

Local attractions

Bring your bike and set forth to conquer as much of Hadrian's Cycleway as you can possibly manage: this splendid route takes in Roman forts and spectacular coastal scenery, small villages and busy market towns, mainly on quiet roads or country lanes. Start from the site to access the 34.8-mile run from Ravenglass to Maryport, passing Glannaventa Roman Bath House, Ravenglass, Saltcoates, Holmrook, Drigg and Seascale.

Not up for pedalling quite so far? Take the bike – or car – for a day in the handsome coastal village of Ravenglass, to pootle around its harbour and Muncaster Castle and gardens; toga types should like a look at the Ravenglass Roman Bath House too. Or make for the beaches at Brigg or Seascale, two and a half and five and a half miles respectively from the farm and both reachable by bike, car or on foot.

Other famed Lake District activities and attractions are within easy driving distance, like Wastwater lake (20 minutes), hikes from Eskdale (25 minutes), or climbing at Great Gable and Scafell Pike, 35 minutes away. And if you like your sightseeing with the minimum of effort? Hail the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway steam train for a scenic chuff through the Cumbrian countryside and Eskdale valley from Ravenglass to Dalegarth.
