Howbeck Lodge: Pitch

General

  • Peaceful touring pitches on a family-run working farm with great views
  • Bassenthwaite, Ullswater and Helvellyn within a half-hour drive
  • By the C2C cycle trail; 10 minutes' walk from a village shop and pub

What would you say to a stint at Howbeck Lodge, a peaceful site on a family-run working farm at the northern tip of the Lake District? If the answer is 'yes, please', then you can look forward to lovely views over the river that runs past the pitches and out to the green countryside beyond…

This may be a rural site, but it’s a most conveniently located one: the M6 (Junction 41) is easily accessed 10 miles away, and the village of Hesket Newmarket is 10 minutes’ walk away for a village shop and pub. The C2C (Coast to Coast) route passes just by the farm as well, so this makes a handy stopover for any cyclists making their way across the country by pedal power.

Days out are just as handy: it’s straightforward to get to several of the northern lakes (including Ullswater and Bassenthwaite) and peaks like Skiddaw and Helvellyn, or to Hadrian’s Wall or the Solway coast. Carlisle is half an hour’s drive away if you feel the need for a bit of city time.

The farm’s serviced pitches are dog-friendly and have access to facilities including a toilet and shower block a short walk away.

Setting, very picturesque, nice walks nearby, friendly staff, pitch with water as well as electric. Meals can be ordered from farmhouse and fresh bread made to order was lovely.

    Disliked:

Not major thing but toilets and showers a bit of a walk away although I understand that units are to be installed near serviced pitches.

Wonderful views, good base for walking and sightseeing. convince of it being a fully serviced pitch, very tentative owners of the site who offered advice, fresh baked bread and pitza service on a evening. The site was a 5min walk to a community run pub that did meals on certain nights. This is a working farm so expect some noise on a morning as they go about there every day business.

    Disliked:

NOT many toilets on site, but they have plans to put 2 x shower & toilet units on the touring pitch site.
Would have preferred a grass pitch as the hard standing was very coarse had uncomfortable under foot.

This is a wonderful site with level, good sized fully serviced pitches on a working farm. Friendly and helpful owners. Freshly baked bread and pitza were delicious.
The showers are a little rustic but clean, with plenty of hot water with good pressure. Charcoal bbq’s and free WiFi were provided which is a nice touch.
There are plenty of local walks and Bassenthwaite and Keswick are only a 20 min drive away.
Makes you appreciate all the hard work farmers do.

Local attractions

If you're looking to spend some time by the water, Bassenthwaite Lake (20 minutes' drive) will surely be on your list. This most northerly lake in the national park is very quiet, with few towns and villages around its shores. Head here for walks along the path that runs along the western shore, or stick around to discover the animals on display just to the north of the lake at the Lake District Wildlife Park (20 minutes).

It's a short drive to other top attractions too, the likes of which include historic Dalemain House (20 minutes), the Lakes Distillery (20 minutes), mountain peaks like Helvellyn (30 minutes) or Skiddaw (35 minutes) and the far-famed Derwent Pencil Museum, where you can learn all about graphite. Birdoswald Roman Fort, part of Hadrian’s Wall, can be reached by road in 50 minutes as well.

Cumbrian life isn't all about the fells and lakes, though: you can take yourself off to Carlisle (30 minutes) for a more urban day out at the castle, cathedral and Tullie House museum, or you could get to Cumbria's gorgeous coastline in about 35 minutes for days out on the sand.

  • Mirehouse Historic House and Gardens (9.4 miles)
  • Castlerigg Stone Circle (9.8 miles)
  • Dalemain Historic House & Gardens (10.9 miles)
