Make a break for the Lakes with a trip to Lakeland Leisure Park, whose lush emerald lawns lie in a coastal setting just 30 minutes from Lake Windermere. Lakeland Leisure Park is on the southern side of the Lake District National Park, and you’ll no doubt want to shake a leg and get exploring all that glorious countryside; there are walks and cycle rides for all abilities here, from formidable fell walking to soothing sylvan strolls. There’s plenty to keep everyone occupied on site, too: heated indoor and outdoor pools (the outdoor pool is open during the summer) have fun watersports sessions such as aqua gliders (a bit like water-based dodgems), three flavours of golf (crazy, pitch and putt, or a traditional nine hole course - you can hire all the kit you need), a bowling green and a bowling alley, plus tennis, archery, fencing and more. As with other Haven sites, guests can buy an Activity Pass in advance for the “pay as you go” sessions, although a reasonable number of activities come free. Haven’s children’s entertainers run a fab range of fun sessions in the free kids’ clubs, too - cookery, crafts, science, stage school and sporting challenges are just some of the many activities on the agenda, so there should be something to tempt even the choosiest child. Young Bear Grylls in the making can even get stuck into the wildly entertaining Nature Rockz activities run at the park. Learn all sorts from bushcraft to building shelters, and try everything from beachcombing or bug safaris. Most activities are free but a small charge may apply to some. Foodies, fear not: bountiful barbies are laid on in the summer months, the comfy lounge bar offers an all-day menu throughout the year, and there’s a chippie as well. Later in the day, guests can live it up in the Live Lounge, where the free evening entertainment includes tribute bands, cabaret, competitions and dancing.

Local attractions

On the banks of Lake Windermere, in Brockhole, is the Lake District Visitor Centre, which has gorgeous gardens to explore, interactive exhibitions, a café with fab lake views, crazy golf, an indoor soft play area, and slides and scramble nets galore in the large outdoor adventure playground. Watch out for the cannibal crayfish in the freshwater aquarium... The steamer cruises on Windermere and Coniston are another ideal way to absorb the glorious lakeland scenery, and passengers can continue under steam power on the pretty Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway (combined sail and rail tickets are available). Peter Rabbit fans will be enthralled by the World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness, where they can wander through Mrs Tiggywinkle’s kitchen or Jemima Puddleduck’s woodland glade to meet their favourite characters. If real animals are preferable to the imaginary kind, try the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, where you can hand feed giraffes, penguins, lemurs and kangaroos, and get up close to an exciting range of creatures via the walk through enclosures and aerial walkways. At Honister Slate Mine, visitors can don helmets and lamps for a subterranean tour of the working mine, and adventurous types can scale the Via Ferrata along the cliff edge of Fleetwith Pike. History buffs will enjoy a poke around Holker Hall, whose stunning house and gardens are the family home of Lord and Lady Cavendish; the estate’s Food Hall is packed with gourmet goodies, and there’s a great gift shop. It’s also an easy ride to Blackpool for a fun-packed family day out. Blackpool Tower is a must-see, and not just for the views from the top - its grandiose architecture houses a circus, an Inca-themed adventure playground, grisly dungeons and more. Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s 42 acres contain a whopping 125 rides and attractions, from loopy white knuckle affairs to calming cruises - no wonder it’s the top tourist destination in the country.
