Eskdale valley campsite

  • Scenic, remote no-frills farm site in the west Lake District
  • Within 10 minutes’ walk of Stanley Ghyll Waterfall and wild pools
  • Spacious and a 10-minute drive from Eskdale’s shop and steam railway
Getting to Eskdale Valley Campsite is an adventure in itself. Down a rugged track which passes by a Grade II-listed arched stone bridge known affectionately as Doctor Bridge and then across a cattle grid, this no-frills farm site is remote indeed. It has a stunning setting on a fell farm in the Esdake Valley in the Lake District National Park, which as some of you may already know, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Equal parts peaceful and scenic, the farm has over half a kilometre of private river Esk frontage. It’s also adjacent to Penny Hill Farm, once owned by the writer Beatrix Potter, and has views of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. Paths through the extensive farmlands are bordered by stone walls and woodlands. It's possible to get onto trails right from the doorstep, whether for casual walking, hiking, mountain biking or tracking down prehistoric stone circles and paths once taken by Vikings and Romans. The farm is a 10-minute walk from Stanley Ghyll Waterfall and its wild swimming pools. If you’d like something more vigorous, take the 10-minute walk to the nearby activity centre to book activities like rock climbing, canoeing and archery. Eskdale is a 10-minute drive from Lower Birker Farm. It has a small shop where guests can pick up basic groceries, as well as a Japanese garden and a station on the Eskdale for the Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway. Portable toilet facilities are available on site, and barbecues and firepits are both permitted.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Picturesque location with easy access to walks and wild swimming spots. Nearby pub.

Disliked: Although very quiet generally. 1 very loud and inconsiderate group disrupted our trip, we appreciate difficult for the campsite to manage, but it was still a problem.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Excellent scenery, clean campsite and well maintained. Plenty of hiking to do in the surrounding area with a good pub within walking distance of the campsite.

Disliked: No showers and the water from the tap had to be boiled to drink. Not an awful lot to to nearby if you don’t want/can’t hike.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Plenty of space on site and owner was very helpful, pulled us out of field when stuck with rear wheel drive car without being asked. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something secluded. Roads from Windermere very narrow, windy and tricky to navigate but worth it for the views of The Valley if you’re willing. Good access for driving to Scafell Pike

Liked: Perfect campsite for us, loads of room and stunning views. If you into walking and wild swimming, then this is a great base. There is one porta loo and a fresh water stand pipe, basic but brilliant👍

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Amazing location and beautiful scenery. Spacious site and hardly anyone else there so there was lots of choice of where to pitch. Lots to do around the area!

Disliked: The ground was quite lumpy, hard and uneven all over making it difficult to pitch a tent securely. A big group of men on the site clearly weren’t courteous of the ‘9pm quiet rule’ or of the others staying there which was a shame as it made for a very knackered day after. We ended up staying only for one night due to a very leaky tent and lack of sleep so it felt like a disappointing end to an otherwise nice trip.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Brilliant campsite left to ourselves with plenty of space so no one is looking over your shoulder, definetly the most scenic campsite ive stayed at, breath taking views. no issues, would definitely stay again and very close to scafell pike with plenty of pubs around for food.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nothing. Much better sites to choose than this one.

Disliked: This campsite is having a laugh. There is not any drinking water. They apparently put out a couple of bottles in the morning if you get them in time and only one portaloo for the whole site. No staff. Noisy music and nobody keeping people quiet. No showers or hot water. Much better campsites in Eskdale. Even pop up ones. Forget this one.
