Great views of the fells

General

  • Quiet, back to basics pop-up site on the shore of Coniston Water
  • Tarn Hows and lake cruises within walking distance
  • A 10-minute walk from Coniston village; two minutes to local pub

Waterhead Coniston is a pop-up site in a properly prime position, right on the shoreline of Coniston Water and a 10-minute walk from the centre of Coniston village (for pubs, cafés, takeaways and shops).

This quiet little Cumbria site has been set up in a farmer’s field, with just basic facilities in the form of fresh water and portaloos (there are no further facilities such as bins so you’ll need to take all your rubbish away with you).

The views from here are unsurprisingly splendid, looking over the water and up to the fells – and it’s easy to get out to see a bit more of the Lake District surroundings without using the car, as you can head straight out on walks up to Tarn Hows and local fells or get going on bike rides or hikes by the lake. The refurbed Coniston Inn is a couple of minutes’ stagger away upon your return, although you’re welcome to bring a barbecue along instead if you like.

For more leisurely ways to see the area, take a ride on the Steam Yacht Gondola across Coniston Water or set out for wanders around Brantwood and Hill Top; if you’d prefer to keep the activity going there are plenty of fells and lakes to hike around, and a Go Ape adventure park is 20 minutes’ drive away.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 4 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The location couldn’t be better, right on the shore of Coniston water, with great access for water sports, pub next door, 10 min walk to the sailing club with loads of activities & 10 min walk to the village with excellent pubs & eateries as well as shops for anything you might have forgotten, as well as amazing walks right on your doorstep! It’s a ‘pop up’ site & was everything expected.. Portaloos, cleaned daily & fresh water. No showers but why do you need them when you can wash in the lake! It’s a real ‘back to nature’ site to enjoy the amazing solitude in beautiful surroundings. Yes, the grass is wet in the morning, isn’t it everywhere! but couldn’t think of a better place to wake up. Yes it gets muddy when it rains & caution when driving is required, but you don’t go there to drive, you park up & walk! If you want commercial facilities, concrete pitches & a holiday park, this sure is not for you, but if you want to get away from it all & chill it’s perfect.. I felt very privileged to be able to camp in such a beautiful spot.. I can’t wait to return next year, I visited twice in 2 weeks involving a 6 hour round trip, I liked it that much. 😊

The site was well spaced out and considering the number of tents very very quiet. Some have complained about the road noise but we were camped right next to it and the cars were definitely not noisy or intrusive. The toilets were always very clean and well stocked with toilet roll and hand sanitizer. The main bonus for this site was the location, right on the lake with amazing views and walking distance to both Coniston town and Tor Hows and Tom Gill. I really hope the site is there next year, we can't wait to return.

    Plenty of loos.
Close to main walking routes from site

A sign at the entrance of the campsite would make it easier to find as it can be easily missed.

Small barebones campsite located right on the shores of the lake, very quiet (got worried on Friday night when a lot of groups turned up but thankfully any noise died down to silence after 11pm) with a nice view of Grizedale on the other side of the lake. The campsite ONLY provides drinking water and portable toilets which are very clean and had toilet paper, fires and cookers are allowed off the ground. Coniston is a very short walk away with pubs and restaurants which is ideal when you're sick of beans and bacon

    Disliked:

The hotel lights were very bright and stayed on until late at night which took away from the adventure of it all, particularly when you're trying to stargaze. But can't be helped!

Loved tranquility of site. Pitched over by lake. Yes at night you could hear traffic over on road, but so what? You could also hear owls hooting at night, and woodpecker tapping at tree. Sat outside tent looking out onto lake watching paddleboarders, swimmers, and the Gondola going up and down....amazing!! Short walk into village and round to boat jetty and Bluebird cafe...lovely cafe! Love Coniston...and loved this "Back to basics' site. Would definetely recommend.

    Disliked:

Yes field gets muddy if rains, but we were fortunate to have good weather gave field chance to dry out. Owner had closed off one entrance for that reason, but obviously to give ground chance to dry and flatten out, for future campers. Wasn't a problem.

    Toilets were clean
If lucky enough to visit during a dry spell would probably be okay

    Disliked:

Over priced for just a field with some portaloos and water bowser, i know it's nice to go back to basics but we stayed at other sites with all fascilities for same price or less.
I know the weather cant be controlled but this field was a swamp, had to be towed out by friendly fellow camper with a landy, low hanging trees prevent views of lake and shoreline was pretty uninviting, Coniston village is not one of the lake districts pretiest villages to say the least.

pitch not for a rainy day16/09/2020

There are basic facilities like mobile toilets and drinkable water. That's about it. It's great because pitch is next to the lake with lovely views. Would recommend to stay here only on a dry summer days. Also very close to town Coniston. You can reach closest pub within 2 minutes.

    Disliked:

Campsite not for a rainy day. We were driving past the campsite and we saw that it's by the lake so we decided to stay there over night. Unfortunately the moment we drove through the gates all the mood started. We decided to turn around but our car got stuck in on the pitch. There was no way we would be able to get out by ourselves. That pitch was a big swamp. Owner of the pitch could help us only next day. Luckily some local was driving past on defender and helped us to tow car to the main road. We already pitched our tent and paid for the stay so we stayed over night. Pitch is very close to the road, night is quiet but gets noisy in the morning.
