  • Peaceful Lake District site on the shores of Windermere
  • A 10-minute drive from Hill Top; Ambleside 20 minutes
  • Activities including watersports, shooting and off-road driving
Set in the expansive grounds of Cumbria's Graythwaite Estate, this scenic site on the shores of Lake Windermere is deep in the Lake District National Park. This pop-up site is excellent for outdoor breaks spent exploring the local area or trying out some of the activities available on site. Located on the western side of Windermere, dog-friendly Graythwaite Camping has peaceful green grounds fringed by woodland. On site, there are toilets, hot showers and the site's hub, where you can chill out, play table football, charge your devices, listen to music or book an exciting open-air adventure somewhere on the estate. An on-site shop is on hand for essentials. Activities on the estate include shooting, watersports, off-road driving, boat rides and bushcraft classes. If and when you venture beyond the site limits, you'll be well placed to visit Hill Top, Michelin-starred restaurants, lakeside trails and attractive towns and gorgeous villages like Hawkshead and Ambleside.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Access to Windermere Lake. Wheelbarrows to move tent from car to pitch. Fridge freezer space.

Disliked: Loud atmosphere not managed by staff. Multiple groups of young people shouting, swearing and playing music until late. Showers and toilets very small, not suitable for tall people. Also not that clean and no facility to dry hands and no changing area for showers. Hard to get ahold of staff, when I called the number it just directed me to a full inbox.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: For a solo traveller and her dog, this was perfect. I found a perfect spot with a view over the lake and loads of space away from other tents. There is so much space and only a 4 min walk to a beautiful lake side beach where you can swim! It cooled my doggo off and he also enjoyed the surrounding fields to have a run around! When I arrived the man running the little refreshment hut was so friendly, gave me camping spot recommendations and a nice cuppa! There were wheel barrows to help take your stuff to your pitch and the toilets and showers were super good for camping! Nice hot water and the toilet paper etc kept getting replenished. It was only a 25 min drive to where I did a hike, Old Man of Coniston and right on the lake! I will defo be returning ☺️

Disliked: I wish the refreshment van had been there on the Monday too, as the weather wasn’t as great and fancied my evening hot drink ☺️

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Big campsite with plenty of great spots to pitch. Love how close it was to the lake! Was easy to take down paddleboards to the lakeside. Staff working at the bar/reception were really friendly and approachable. Plenty of signs with information on and wheelbarrows to help transport stuff to car/tent.

Disliked: The toilets weren't in the best shape and the bins in the female toilet needed to be emptied more frequently.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic lakeside location. Excellent access for kayaking or paddle boarding. Lovely onsite pop up bar which is open on an evening and morning for coffee. Very friendly staff. We liked the fact we could choose our own pitch rather than have one allocated and the wheelbarrows were very handy to transport belongings from the car to the tent. The showers were hot and there were pegs to hang your towel/ wash bag outside of the cubicle. Great that there's somewhere to charge phones and there were also fridges in the chill out zone.

Disliked: Definitely bring crocs or flip flops for the toilets. The floor was constantly muddy near the showers which I can only imagine would be worse when it's wet outside. There was never any soap to wash hands that had ran out so bring your own. I would say they could do to be cleaned twice a day rather than once, but equally it's camping, it's not designed to be glamorous!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely friendly site, nice welcome when we checked in. It's a "pop up" so the toilets and showers are in a container but they all worked and were cleaned to a reasonable standard. There's a bar on site with some fire pits and chairs so it's a nice spot itlf you want to be social. Very close to the lake (my son ran from the top of the site to the lake in 2 minutes) with a little pebble shore to launch from. We really liked this site and may well go back.

Disliked: Just make sure you use the link in the booking email or what3words to find the site. Google got confused as the Graythwaite estate is quite large.

Local attractions

As the largest lake in the national park, Windermere is skirted by a good range of attractions, with something here to suit a variety of tastes. For a peaceful retreat, spend a few hours exploring the 30 acres of gardens at Brockhole (30 minutes' drive), or take the kids to Hill Top (10 minutes) to visit the former home of much-loved children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter. For boat trips, you'll be a 10-minute drive from the handy Windermere ferry that connects the eastern side of the water to the west, or you could head to the Steam Yacht Gondola at the northern tip of Coniston Water (25 minutes) for a stylish jaunts aboard a well-restored Victorian vessel that was first launched way back in in 1859. A network of lovely lakeside footpaths is accessible directly from site, but for something more challenging try a hike up the Old Man of Coniston (25 minutes). There’s also the option of embarking on the difficult but very scenic Struggle Trail from Ambleside (20 minutes) before calling in for a well-deserved pint at the Kirkstone Inn.
