Graythwaite Glamping: Set on the Graythwaite Estate

General

  • Peaceful glamping site on the shores of Lake Windermere
  • A 10-minute drive from Hill Top; Ambleside 20 minutes
  • Activities including watersports, shooting and off-road driving

Set in the expansive grounds of Cumbria's Graythwaite Estate, this scenic glamping site on the shores of Lake Windermere is deep in the Lake District National Park. This pop-up canvas village is made up of sturdy pre-pitched bell tents that take the hassle out of outdoor breaks, leaving you free to explore the local area or try out some of the activities available on site.

Located on the western site of Lake Windermere, the dog-friendly bell tents at Graythwaite Glamping are spaced out among peaceful green grounds that are fringed by woodland. They come with fitted carpets and waterproof groundsheets but are unfurnished, so you'll need to bring your bedding of choice plus camping essentials like cooking equipment, torches and spare batteries.

The units are a short walk from toilets, hot showers and the site's glamping hub, where you can chill out, play table football, charge your devices, listen to music or chat with site staff about booking an exciting open-air adventure somewhere on the estate. An on-site shop is on hand for essentials, while for hot snacks there's a pizza van that visits at least once a week.

Activities on the estate include shooting, watersports, off-road driving, boat rides and bushcraft classes. If and when you venture beyond the site limits, you'll be well-placed to visit Hill Top, Michelin-starred restaurants, lakeside trails and attractive towns and gorgeous villages like Hawkshead and Ambleside.

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

The people who worked there were very friendly and helpful our whole stay! The glamping tents are were very spacious and had plenty of room for everyone. The location right next to the Lake was ideal for morning/evening dips. The toilet facilities were standard and kept exceptionally clean considering a lot of excess grass from the surrounding area was being trampled everywhere. Lastly the price was brilliantly cheap and worth every penny! Would definitely return :)

    Disliked:

The only slight issue with our stay was we booked for 2 tents next to each other, but this was only numerically (11 & 12) and those tents were actually a fair distance apart. As a group of 10 friends this was initially a bit frustrating but did not impact the quality of our stay in the end + we were aware that it was not the fault of staff working there. Besides they did their best to rearrange to get us adjacent but they could not facilitate this in the end.

My sister and I stayed 2 nights at Greythwaite Glamping in a bell tent.
We were greeted on site by Sophie who was lovely. She told us where the facilities were and pointed us to our tent. The bell tent was big and we had loads of room, probably could have comfortably fit 6 of us in there.

The site was beautiful. The tents were not too close together and were set in clusters. Ours was at the top of the site so we had a fantastic view down the rest of the field through the next and to Windermere and across the lake. There were sheep in the next field and geese slept there at night. The house martens were swooping down over the field and it was so relaxing watching them. The site is very peaceful and away from anything else.

Our first night we went over to the communal area where there was a table football game and a pingpong table that the kids on site were enjoying. We were lucky enough to catch the pizza guy who visits on site (I think at least once a week) who did woodfired pizzas out of his van. These were delicious though the menu is a bit limited.
There is a permanent van onsite which is open 8-8 and from here you can buy drinks (Hot, cold and alcohol) and they have a few snacks available like crisps and biscuits. The prices are reasonable too. You can order a fire pit, wood and kindling or charcoal from here for your stay. The lads will take these up to your tent for you.
The two lads who seemed to be running the site for the owners were fantastic. They were really friendly and kept checking that the guests were OK and were doing the day to day jobs around site. We sat and chatted with them a few times.

If you go through the gate at the bottom of the field and then through the gate and the bottom of the sheep field and turn right, there is a very narrow beach right on the lakes edge which is a nice spot to chill out. If you follow the path round that runs down the edge of the field and through the woods there is a larger beach area where you can sit and look over the lake in complete peace. At the top of the rocks there has even been a bench installed so you can sit in comfort and admire the views (just watch your footing as it is rocky, so uneven).
My sister went for a swim in the lake at this little beach. The water was so clear and she said warmer than she expected.

Our first night we were lucky enough to eventually get completely clears skies. It is a perfect dark sky spot and we spent a few hours sat at our tent looking at the stars.

The facilities are basic, with showers and toilets but were really clean. There was an area in the barn next to the shower block with communal fridges in so you could store things should you wish too. In the communal area (which was open all night just not the 'bar') you could charge your devices if you had any.

Overall the site was perfect for us. We enjoyed our stay and hope to visit again with our kids.

*We took our own fairy lights for the tent, just in case anyone was wondering about them in the photos.

    Disliked:

There was nothing for us to dislike about the site. It was very peaceful and lovely.
The only thing I would say for anyone staying who is walking as we did is take food. There are no shops near and with a 40(ish) minute walk with gear to the site from the car ferry (nearest shops probably Bowness on the other side of the lake if walking) it is a long way to go if you are feeling hungry.

One suggestion to the owners is to put a couple more signs on the way to the site. We saw one on the way from the ferry and were unsure when we got to the road junctions if we were on the right path. Even just one at the 2 junctions would be great (not sure about the other direction).
Possibly think about camp chair hire too. Most tents had them as they had come in a car but we couldn't carry them. It wasn't the end of the world though as we were happy sat on the grass.

Local attractions

As the largest lake in the national park, Windermere is skirted by a good range of attractions, with something here to suit a variety of tastes. For a peaceful retreat, spend a few hours exploring the 30 acres of gardens at Brockhole (30 minutes' drive), or take the kids to Hill Top (10 minutes) to visit the former home of much-loved children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter.

For boat trips, you're a 10-minute drive from the handy Windermere ferry that connects the eastern side of the water to the west, or you could head to the Steam Yacht Gondola at the northern tip of Coniston Water (25 minutes) for a stylish jaunts aboard a well-restored Victorian vessel that was first launched way back in in 1859.

A network of lovely lakeside footpaths is accessible directly from site, but for something more challenging try a hike up the Old Man of Coniston (25 minutes). There’s also the option of embarking on the difficult but very scenic Struggle Trail from Ambleside (20 minutes) before calling in for a well-deserved pint at the Kirkstone Inn.
