  • Adults-only farm site with stunning views of the Cheshire countryside
  • Alton Towers, Manchester and Chester all within an hour's drive
  • Ramblers' haven with direct access to farm walks
Need a break from the pace of modern life? Turn the rat race into more of a gentle saunter at Welltrough Hall Farm Caravan Park, an adults-only farm site less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Lower Withington in Cheshire. On a 270-acre farm in the scenic Cheshire countryside, this is a top spot for rural rambles: there’s access to a couple of miles' worth of farm walks from the site and there are plenty of other routes nearby – and further afield if you don’t mind taking a spin in the car first. No doubt all the trekking will have you feeling peckish in no time. You can take a 15-minute walk into Lower Worthington for some profesh pub eats at the local, rounding your evening off with a couple of brews. Before you call it a night, pull up a chair and spend some time taking in the spectacular views from site. When it’s time to turn in, don’t worry about getting your pristine sleeping quarters all grubby. There’s a warm dog shower that your family friend can use for free – just be sure to leave enough time for the wet dog smell to fade before you hit the hay.

Liked: Loved the location, the mowed farm walk, the security, the views and the facilities. The toilets and showers were clean and there was plenty of hot water. This was definitely one of the nicest sites we have stayed on. The pre arrival communication was also very good.

Disliked: The awful electric meters! We stayed for 3 nights and ended up feeding it £36.00 as well as having to use gas for heating. We had the heating on its lowest setting, turned it off completely when we went out and never had it above 18 degrees. It wasn’t so much the money but the faff of having to keep walking for change from the machine that will only give you £5 at a time when using a card for payment, as well as having to wake up in the middle of the night to feed the meter when it runs out or risk leaving a huge credit for someone else. It was a constant headache that ruined what would otherwise have been a lovely break away. I get that Nick states the huge rise in unit cost as the reason behind the meters but I can’t help thinking the cost of buying 23 coin operated meters as well as a change machine and having them all fitted must have been an astronomical cost. I can see why people are happy with them in the summer but they will never be popular at any other time of year. I for one would have been happier with a higher price to include the electricity. For the electric meter issue alone, I couldn’t recommend this site and unfortunately would not want to return.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, I'm sorry to hear that you wouldn't return, with out repeating myself from previous responses i put slot of thought into which way to go snd rightly or wrongly this is the way I thought fairest

Scrap the meters and it would be a perfect site.

Liked: A great, quiet well kept site, large serviced pitches, clean toilet and shower facilities with next to no walking distance to them. Nice and secure, we liked the security gate on access too. We really liked the site and it’s location just 1 downside to it unfortunately for us.

Disliked: A huge No for us is the top up meters, we stopped 2 nights, checked in late afternoon the sat, left the power off all day Sunday as was at a wedding and had it on in the evening and spent £20, (money wasn’t an object but the hassle was) with being woken up in the middle of the night to beeping from a power cut due to it running out - we’ll not be back for this reason, we couldn’t relax properly for not knowing if it would need topping up or not, didn’t want to over pay and leave a fortune in credit on the meters, heating was kept on low Inc gas mix to reduce electric even more - considering it was the coldest weekend of the year so far too… The owner should put the price up per night (which is currently cheap) and scrap these meters and we’d be back and think others would agree. Other than this we couldn’t fault the site.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, regarding the meters I thought long and hard as to which way to go, my tarrif went from 15p/kwh to 59p which left me with little choice really,I thought the fairest way was for guests to pay for what they use,I have had alot that haven't used any or very little which would have been unfair to charge them say £32/night,my tarrif goes down to 29p/kwh next march which should make a big difference

Liked: The pitch was good, the views amazing. The WC & Shower were clean.

Disliked: We thought it was a bit pricey compared to other places we’ve visited. In the brief it states that the electricity is charged at 50p kWh, we put £5.00 credit in and after 5 kWh the credit ran out, this appears to have been charged at £1 kWh.

From the manager: Hi Judith, thank you for your review, yes the meters are set at 50p/kwh,you need to press the button on the meter to see the day usage and press again to see your night usage,I think you have just looked at one figure

Liked: A fantastic site, well maintained with lovely views. Easy access to and from the site. The facilities very clean. A enclosed area with animals. Excellent idea with the electric meters, pay as you go and not overcharged £10 a day like other sites. A lovely farm field walk with a mowed path and a bench half way round to take in the views. The same goes for the path to the local pub the Royal Oak easy access and signposted and it’s worth a visit. Hope be back soon we loved it. Keep up the good work Dave and Wendy

Local attractions

Feel like you were born in the wrong century? You’re well placed here for a taste of old-world splendour: tour the house, gardens and farm at Tatton Park 25 minutes’ drive from the site, or get along to Little Moreton Hall, Arley Hall and Gardens or Capesthorne Hall, all within 40 minutes. You may need a bit of high-octane after all that stately exploration, so head to Oulton Park Circuit (one of the most scenic tracks in the UK) for track days and races, or zip over to Alton Towers, just over an hour away, for days spent clinging to coasters. For a break from the endless countryside, you’re 50 minutes from the city of Chester, where you can wander the city walls, explore the Victorian and medieval streets, clamber around the remains of Chester Castle and call into Grosvenor museum to learn about what the city was like when it was under Roman rule. You can also add a little bit of the exotic to your trip with a stop at Chester Zoo before heading home. Not enough city for you? The museums, distilleries, gardens and stadiums of Manchester are about 50 minutes away, and the docks, stunning buildings and (of course) Beatles tours of Liverpool are just over an hour’s travel from base.
