  • Chester Zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium both 50 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-walking area; pubs within 10 minutes’ drive
Neat as a new pin, spacious, level and divided by young saplings. That’ll be the hardstanding and grass pitches at Oakwood Campsite, a family-friendly spot bordering farmland and set 10 minutes’ drive from the conservation village of Church Minshull in rural Cheshire. All the requisites for a relaxed break with family and friends are on hand at this well-maintained site: a modern shower block with baby-changing amenities and a wet room for the mobility impaired, pot washing, water stations, chemical waste disposal, recycling bins and charging points. You may want to eat breakfast and lunch at Minshull’s Garden Centre (10 minutes’ walk), and if you fancy dining out in the evening, there are several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive, as well as takeaways and fast-food outlets in Crewe (15 minutes’ drive). Your canine companions are welcome, and there’s a dedicated dog-walking area on site – please keep them on leads around the pitches. You can also exercise them (and yourselves of course) on longer expeditions down the Shropshire Union Canal towpath.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, peaceful campsite with spacious, level pitches. Guests praise the modern, clean toilet and shower facilities, and friendly, helpful owners. The site is secure with coded gate access and offers good dog walking areas. Some minor issues have been noted, such as shower temperature and electricity metering, but these are generally outweighed by the positive aspects. Many guests express a desire to return.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Everything was lovely! The campsite, the facilities the rubbish bins!! Really enjoyed the stay

Disliked There isn’t a sign to say please call when arrived with a number and you can’t drive close to the keypad as there’s a block in the way so you have to get out your car. Small things! No big issue

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your kind comments.

An email is sent out prior to arrival explaining to guests to phone on arrival.

The block is deliberately put next to the keypad to stop people driving up the kerb and on the verge. (yes, people do that!)

Over all it’s an excellent site, I would definitely stay there again.

Electric optional grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked I stayed over the bank holiday weekend so the site was full for the first night and for a full site with lots of kids and groups there where no issues. There is plenty of space for kids to play. And the site as a whole works well.

Toilets and showers are modern with plenty of room in the cubicles for getting changed.

Disliked I think the functionality of only having two sinks in the toilet/shower block has been over looked. In the mornings it’s a bit chaotic when you have people trying to brush their teeth, whilst other people are trying to wash their hands. There is also not a lot of room to manoeuvre around people using the sink and people using the one mirror whilst you’re trying to exit. Time your morning trips well if the sites busy.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments.

I thought the bank holiday went well especially with the lovely weather.

Inevitably, the shower block gets busy. There is water outside to brush teeth if needed.

Electric optional grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Spacious, level pitches. Beautiful location - very peaceful with lots of wildlife to spot!
Facilities were clean and modern - accessible facilities too which we thought was a lovely addition.
Pay as you go electric was very easy to use & set up - refunded almost immediately when we left. Dogs are welcome and there is a nice dog walking path to follow on site too!
We’re looking forward to a return stay in the future ☺️

Disliked Our electric post didn’t work after a few hours - we managed to plug into an alternative for the night as it was quiet but when busy this would have been a problem.
Despite the facilities being clean and modern the shower wasn’t the best, seemed to be quite low water pressure.
No WiFi which would have been a great addition for a small site, this is preference however!

From the manager: Thank you for your comments.

The water in the showers is pumped, so cannot be improved upon.
The WiFi is bad in the area.

Liked My second stay here. Great pitches and facilities.
Despite being over the Bank Holiday weekend in May and the site was full there was no issue on availability of facilities or noise levels.

Local attractions

Head to the medieval town of Nantwich (15 minutes’ drive) to sample local produce in the indoor market (open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday); the site owners run a cheese stall there and offer a discount to their camping guests. You can also browse indie shops and antique dealers, admire higgledy-piggledy half-timbered houses or take strolls along the River Weaver Keep the kids happy with a visit to the elephants, big cats and rhinos at Chester Zoo, or learn more about rays and sharks at Blue Planet Aquarium (both 50 minutes). The bucket-list theme park Alton Towers (an hour and 10 minutes) has extreme rollercoasters as well as gentle rides for toddlers in CBeebies Land. Any rainy days can be taken care of in Crewe (15 minutes); simply head for the bowling alleys at Tenpin Crewe or catch a film at the neighbouring cinema. If you’re keen to maintain your fitness regime, you can swim lengths of the pool and train in the gym at Crewe Lifestyle Centre.
