  • Chester Zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium both 50 minutes’ drive
  • On-site basics shop; dog-walking area; pubs within 10 minutes’ drive
Neat as a new pin, spacious, level and divided by young saplings. That’ll be the hardstanding and grass pitches at Oakwood Campsite, a family-friendly spot bordering farmland and set 10 minutes’ drive from the conservation village of Church Minshull in rural Cheshire. All the requisites for a relaxed break with family and friends are on hand at this well-maintained site: a modern shower block with baby-changing amenities and a wet room for the mobility impaired, pot washing, water stations, chemical waste disposal, recycling bins and charging points. Left something essential behind at home? Chances are you’ll be able to pick it up in the small site shop at reception, which is open in the morning and early evening. You can eat breakfast and lunch at Minshull’s Garden Centre (10 minutes’ walk), and if you fancy dining out in the evening, there are several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive, as well as takeaways and fast-food outlets in Crewe (15 minutes’ drive). Your canine companions are welcome, and there’s a dedicated dog-walking area on site – please keep them on leads around the pitches. You can also exercise them (and yourselves of course) on longer expeditions down the Shropshire Union Canal towpath.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Modern and clean. All very new. Lovely lady who met us on arrival. Clean and tidy all round. Big sky so lovely views looking up at night.

Disliked: Few minor issues need to be looked at. No grey waste disposal. Wash basin in bathroom was one big one rather than individual, which didn’t seem appropriate. No separate tap to clean toilet waste. It’s a lovely site. Felt like it needed ‘finishing off’.

From the manager: Hi Andrew, Thank you for your comments. I am sorry I did not specify the grey waste, as there is somewhere to put it. Washbasins are installed now, so I'm sorry you don't like them. There is a tap right next to the chemical waste store as other guests asked for it and I installed it recently. I look forward to seeing you again.

Excellent site with excellent facilities. Friendly owner.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The shower and toilet block was the cleanest I have ever seen. All facilities were of the highest quality. It was warm and bright. Welcoming site owner, who asked if we needed local information. She stayed and chatted which was lovely. Pitches level and roomy. Evidence of a good level of maintenance. Fresh plantings of trees and shrubs.

From the manager: Thank you for your very kind review. I look forward to seeing you both again.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: For those that love spotlessly clean toilet blocks you'll love this place 15-minute walk to the nearest pub the does a really nice Sunday roast

Disliked: The post to enter the code to open the gate is too far away and you have to get out of the car the waterpoint nearest star pitch is also next to the chemical waste tank and people use this to clean out their toilet cassettes another tap is needed also the tank hasn't been buried so you have to lift your grey water tank three foot high to be able to empty it and the site could do with much better drainage please don't get me wrong we had a great time but a new size needs to know it's teething problems

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Colin, Thank you for your comments. For clarity: The gate post was deliberately set back to avoid collisions with wide vehicles (ie. caravans ) The chemical waste is for chemical waste NOT grey water. It is located above ground to enable me to move it easily if needed. The tap was put there by request (of previous guests) to facilitate the washing of vessels. There are more taps on site, which might involve a 100m walk. Regarding drainage, the weekend you visited was probably the wettest, compounded by months of unseasonal rain. The field is drained and other guests commented how quickly the water had gone away. The grass pitches are not open at this time of year for that very reason.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Friendly greeting upon arrival. Great location. Plenty of walks in the area. There is a gate at bottom of site to avoid walking on the road. Across a couple of fields to the canal. Walks to marina or Church Minshull. (muddy when wet though). Fantastic facilities.

Disliked: 11am checkout on day of departure. Usual 12 noon would give that extra hour for relaxing breakfast.

From the manager: Hello Yvonne, Thankyou for your kind comments. I am considering altering the checkout time!

Splendid in evey aspect. Top of our list.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Everything. This site is a real treat. A lot of money and thought has gone into creating this. Let's get serious: Clear, professional, well communicated instructions for your stay. Not far from M6 on good roads; easy wide site access; well signposted; hard access road to hardstanding pitches and grass pitches so no soft grass to sink in thank goodness. (of course the grass pitches are grass!); level pitches; close hookup; plenty of water tap points; spacious layout; modern well kept facilities; friendly owners.... I could go on but am already risking making this so popular that it will be full, all the time, so no room for me. I cannot recommend highly enough.

Disliked: No pegs in facility doors.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Oh my goodness Peter! Thank you for your glowing review. I will get some pegs on the toilet doors.

The bucket-list theme park Alton Towers (an hour and 10 minutes) has extreme rollercoasters as well as gentle rides for toddlers in CBeebies Land. Any rainy days can be taken care of in Crewe (15 minutes); simply head for the bowling alleys at Tenpin Crewe or catch a film at the neighbouring cinema.
