  • Family-friendly camping 15 minutes’ drive from Crewe in rural Cheshire
  • Chester Zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium both 50 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-walking area; pubs within 10 minutes’ drive
Neat as a new pin, spacious, level and divided by young saplings. That’ll be the hardstanding and grass pitches at Oakwood Campsite, a family-friendly spot bordering farmland and set 10 minutes’ drive from the conservation village of Church Minshull in rural Cheshire. All the requisites for a relaxed break with family and friends are on hand at this well-maintained site: a modern shower block with baby-changing amenities and a wet room for the mobility impaired, pot washing, water stations, chemical waste disposal, recycling bins and charging points. You may want to eat breakfast and lunch at Minshull’s Garden Centre (10 minutes’ walk), and if you fancy dining out in the evening, there are several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive, as well as takeaways and fast-food outlets in Crewe (15 minutes’ drive). Your canine companions are welcome, and there’s a dedicated dog-walking area on site – please keep them on leads around the pitches. You can also exercise them (and yourselves of course) on longer expeditions down the Shropshire Union Canal towpath.

Liked Nothing

Disliked There are great big long rows of plots. So the back rows have to pass your windows to get to the amenities. So not a relaxing site when everyone passing your window all the time.

From the manager: How very disappointing you felt the need to give such a low score for just a single nights stay.

It would appear from your comments, that actually, there wasn't much to complain about?

Small sites like mine, are very affected by poor reviews and I feel your review was particularly harsh, and unnecessarily so.

I would urge you to talk to the owners of sites before doing this sort of thing again.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Bathrooms were very modern and well specced. It is in a lovely rural area with good walks locally. A decent pub is within 1km.

Disliked I wasn't keen on the use of campfires and BBQs during the incredibly hot and dry summer we have had, it was a disaster waiting to happen. Also it was a bit like the wild west at times with the noise levels, there did not seem to be a 'lights out' policy or if there was it wasn't implemented. I was thankful that we all had earplugs.

Liked Really nice site with modern facilities. Good dog walking area and access to a public footpath which leads to the canal. Electricity is metered which I think is fair and the site is well laid out.
Location easy to find and nice to watch the planes as the sun goes down.

Disliked The bin area has rubbish piled up. There was one metal industrial bin and 2 bulk tonne bags. All was full and people dumped rubbish next to the bins. No recycling also.

Showers had a bit of mould in the sealant.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments.
If I may address them:

The bins are very difficult to manage, that is why they are out of sight. Extra 'tote' bags are provided for overflow situations. All the rubbish was removed from site when everyone left on the Sunday afternoon.
I am always staggered at the amount of rubbish people create, it would seem that 'saving the planet 'doesn't apply whilst camping!

Recycling is done at the collection company site.

Mould on the sealant is a constant battle

Local attractions

Head to the medieval town of Nantwich (15 minutes’ drive) to sample local produce in the indoor market (open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday); the site owners run a cheese stall there and offer a discount to their camping guests. You can also browse indie shops and antique dealers, admire higgledy-piggledy half-timbered houses or take strolls along the River Weaver Keep the kids happy with a visit to the elephants, big cats and rhinos at Chester Zoo, or learn more about rays and sharks at Blue Planet Aquarium (both 50 minutes). The bucket-list theme park Alton Towers (an hour and 10 minutes) has extreme rollercoasters as well as gentle rides for toddlers in CBeebies Land. Any rainy days can be taken care of in Crewe (15 minutes); simply head for the bowling alleys at Tenpin Crewe or catch a film at the neighbouring cinema. If you’re keen to maintain your fitness regime, you can swim lengths of the pool and train in the gym at Crewe Lifestyle Centre.
