General

  • Close to Route 68 and Britain's highest vineyard
  • Spectacular Holme Valley views
  • Farm shop just steps away

Heard of Holmfirth Vineyard? How about Route 68? Listen up, Yorkshire-bound holidaymakers, for these are two Holmfirth places that should take up residence on your list of Must Visit Forthwith. Holmfirth Vineyard is Britain’s highest and is visited by thousands of wine fans annually, who flow here to take tours, take tipples and take vittles in the restaurant and café.

And Route 68? This is Britain’s longest cycling route, ringing the scenic changes of the land along 355 miles of landscape from Derby, through the Peak District and on to Berwick-upon-Tweed in the Scottish Borders. Both vineyard and cycling could easily be combined on a Yorkshire camping holiday, but doing all the Route 68 miles might lead you to wine about sore muscles afterwards…

Say cheers to being close to both vineyard and Route 68 with a stay at Whitegate Leisure Caravan and Camp Site, a ten-minute walk from the wines and a prompt pedal from the bike route, which passes along the bottom of the park.

The views of the Holme Valley from here are corking (if you’ve seen Last of the Summer Wine you’ll know the lie of the land), all among a peaceful park with toilets and shower block, water point, blue waste disposal and an outdoor washing-up area. The owners at Whitegate have hardcored and turfed over all the pitches on the farm, to keep a countryside feel and to prevent tourers and motorhomes getting stuck if it rains.

Holmfirth village is about 40 minutes’ walk away and will see you sorted with its wine bars, pubs, cafés, shops and restaurants of all flavours from fine dining to pub grub, while Coddy’s farm shop steps away from the site can sort you with everything DIY from sausages to steak.

Elevated outlook across the valley from Holmefirth and Holmebridge with views iof Digley reservoir. Pitchs were nearly level on hardcore covered with grass so very firm and no requirements for levelling chocks unless you're a stickler for levelness. Shower facilities were exceptionally clean modern and warm. Host Sue was very friendly greeting us when we arrived letting us know all the relevant information, as well as information about local walks from the campsite which we we had already pre-planned anyway but the additional info was very helpful , which was one of the reasons for choosing the site. The free Wifi was very strong and an added bonus.

    Disliked:

Showers could have done with a wooden tread mat or similar as the floor was very slippery , a lift up seat would have been nice too but not essential.

Great campsite! Very easy to find our pitch and the owner came over straight away to make sure we were ok and gave us some great directions and advice on where to go in town. Really good price with some good clean facilities. Holmfirth town is also really nice both day and night, we ordered a taxi there and back at around £7 per journey, it had some good cheap pubs and nice cocktail bars as well. The campsite had both families and young groups and the owner had no problems with us drinking and playing music as long as it wasn't too loud after 10. We will definitely be coming again next year.

Local attractions

If you’ve ever seen the BBC programme Last of the Summer Wine of (recent) yore, you’ll know the scenery of the Holme Valley and the stone cottages of Holmfirth – for this, goggleboxers, is where it was filmed. Compo, Clegg et al are immortalised in a Last of the Summer Wine exhibition, up the steps into Compo’s cottage with gift shop, exhibition and the dubious sight of Compo’s sleeping combo (hint: not silk or high fashion).

For a small town, Holmfirth has a fair bit going on all year round: its former cinema the Picturedrome holds live music events in all seasons and is the venue for the Holmfirth Film Festival and Holmfirth Arts Festival annually, and the choral society has regular concerts in the civic hall, also the venue for the Holme Valley Brass Band Contest every June. The town’s pool and leisure centre has had an extensive facelift and is open seven days a week all year round.

Miles and miles of walks and bike rides in spectacular scenery are all around too, from pedalling or pottering around the Holme Valley to roaming around the Peak District four miles south from Holmfirth.

If pottering, take the short walk along the woods of Digley Reservoir or go birdwatching at Blackmoorfoot Reservoir; if pedalling, tire your legs out on the climb up to Holme Moss View Point, or stick to Route 68 and go south from Holmfirth to Dunford Bridge on the route’s Peak District section from Holmfirth to Derby.

Travel northeast and northwest from Whitegate Leisure Caravan and Camp Site for day trips at the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors national parks, or dazzle in the bright lights of Manchester and Leeds, both about 20 miles away by car.

Must see

  • National Coal Mining Museum for England (10.2 miles)
  • Yorkshire Sculpture Park (10.6 miles)
  • Wentworth Castle Gardens (11.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Marsden Moor Estate (6.4 miles)
  • Lyme Park (16.8 miles)
