  • Close to Route 68 and Britain's highest vineyard
  • Spectacular Holme Valley views
  • Farm shop just steps away
Heard of Holmfirth Vineyard? How about Route 68? Listen up, Yorkshire-bound holidaymakers, for these are two Holmfirth places that should feature on your list of Must Visit Forthwith. Holmfirth Vineyard is Britain’s highest and is visited by thousands of wine fans annually, who flow here to take tours and tipples. And Route 68? This is Britain’s longest cycling route, ringing the scenic changes of the land along 355 miles of landscape from Derby, through the Peak District and on to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Both vineyard and cycling could easily be combined on a Yorkshire camping holiday, but doing all the Route 68 miles might lead you to wine about sore muscles afterwards… Say cheers to being close to both with a stay at Whitegate Leisure Caravan and Camp Site, a ten-minute walk from the wines and a prompt pedal from the bike route, which passes along the bottom of the park. The views of the Holme Valley from here are corking (if you’ve seen Last of the Summer Wine you’ll know the lie of the land), all among a peaceful park with toilets and shower block, water point, blue waste disposal and an outdoor washing-up area. The owners have hardcored and turfed over all the pitches here, to keep a countryside feel and prevent tourers and motorhomes getting stuck if it rains. Holmfirth village is about 40 minutes’ walk away and will see you sorted with its pubs, cafés, shops and restaurants; Coddy’s farm shop, steps away from the site, can sort you with bits for a DIY dinner.

Local attractions

If you’ve ever seen the BBC programme Last of the Summer Wine, you’ll know the scenery of the Holme Valley and the stone cottages of Holmfirth – for this, goggleboxers, is where it was filmed. Compo, Clegg et al are immortalised in an exhibition up in Compo’s cottage. For a small town, Holmfirth has a fair bit going on all year round, including live music events, a film festival and an arts festival. Miles and miles of walks and bike rides in spectacular scenery are all around too, from pedalling or pottering around the Holme Valley to roaming around the Peak District four miles south from Holmfirth. If pottering, take the short walk around the woods of Digley Reservoir or go birdwatching at Blackmoorfoot Reservoir; if pedalling, tire your legs out on the climb to Holme Moss View Point, or stick to Route 68 and go south from Holmfirth to Dunford Bridge on the route’s Peak District section. Alternatively, travel northeast and northwest for day trips at the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors national parks, or dazzle in the bright lights of Manchester and Leeds, both about 20 miles away by car.
