Entrance to the site

  • West Yorkshire wild camping on the outskirts of Hebden Bridge
  • National Trust Hardcastle Crags 10 minutes’ drive; Halifax 25 minutes
  • Expansive views of Calder Valley from the site; hiking trails nearby
A public service announcement for suggestible folks: don’t let the fictional criminal shenanigans of the BBC drama Happy Valley (and set in these very hills) deter you from booking a spot at Happy Valley Camping. In fact, you could turn your wild West Yorkshire holiday into a ‘spot the location’-type break if you like… At this small site on the outskirts of the market town of Hebden Bridge (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk), you can let the kids run around free on the grassy field as you relax and take in the spectacular landscape of the Calder Valley. Meanwhile, active types can set off on long walks (with their four-legged companion in tow) along the River Calder, up hills like High Brown Knoll (10 minutes’ drive) or through the woodlands surrounding National Trust - Hardcastle Crags (10 minutes), home of the 19th-century Gibson Mill – along with wildlife including roe deer and woodpeckers. There are heaps of cycling paths around, too, so don’t forget to strap your mountain bike to the roof rack before leaving home. There’s a portable toilet on site, but not much else in the way of amenities: there is no running water, so each booking is provided with bottled drinking water. What you will also find is a warm welcome and plenty of peace and quiet to recharge your batteries.

Non-electric grass and gravel tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The pitch was a lovely quiet paddock at the top of the hill. We were the only ones on the site. The view was great and the communication with the owners was great.

Disliked: The price was way too much for what it is. Nothing there apart from a very clean portaloo. There’s no running water but the owner very kindly dropped off a big bottle for us.

Non-electric grass and gravel tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The site has lovely views over Hebden and was only a 20 minute walk down to the village. We got the bus back up the hill as it’s quite steep but they’re every 30 minutes so why walk. The field was lush with good flat places to camp and although just a porter loo on site it made no odds to us. Such a relaxing place to chill and June who owns it was soooo lovely and made sure we were okay every day. We will definitely be going back 100%.

Disliked: Nothing at all. Just perfect you make it what you make it.

Non-electric grass and gravel tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Very quiet, small campsite, soft tidy grass pitches, views overlooking the valley. 20 mins into Hebden Bridge great place to explore the valley. Friendly owners. Off a quiet lane almost no traffic. No Facilities - just one well maintained portaloo, back to basics.

Incredibly steep walk up from Hebden - TOP TIP the 594 / 595 bus service from Hebden drops off at the housing estate at the end of the lane.

Disliked: Nothing wrong with site - as said there is no facilities but a water tap would help.

Local attractions

Oxenhope (15 minutes’ drive) marks the starting point of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (KWVR), a five-mile heritage track with steam trains travelling through the Worth Valley. The KWVR is also known for its association with the 1970s film The Railway Children, which was filmed around these parts. Rainy day and the kids are getting restless? Take them to Halifax (25 minutes) and Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, where they can explore several themed interactive zones (including the human body and technology) or just get creative in the play areas. Stop for a bite to eat at Halifax Borough Market before visiting the 15th-century Minster. You’re close to Brontë Country here, and you can learn all about the famed writing sisters at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth (25 minutes), where exhibits include original furniture and assorted personal items. Then take a walk up to the Bronte Waterfall and sit on Charlotte’s Chair (said to be where the Jane Eyre author would come to seek inspiration).
