  • West Yorkshire wild camping on the outskirts of Hebden Bridge
  • National Trust Hardcastle Crags 10 minutes’ drive; Halifax 25 minutes
  • Expansive views of Calder Valley from the site; hiking trails nearby
A public service announcement for suggestible folks: don’t let the fictional criminal shenanigans of the BBC drama Happy Valley (and set in these very hills) deter you from booking a spot at Happy Valley Camping. In fact, you could turn your wild West Yorkshire holiday into a ‘spot the location’-type break if you like… At this small site on the outskirts of the market town of Hebden Bridge (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk), you can let the kids run around free on the grassy field as you relax and take in the spectacular landscape of the Calder Valley. Meanwhile, active types can set off on long walks (with their four-legged companion in tow) along the River Calder, up hills like High Brown Knoll (10 minutes’ drive) or through the woodlands surrounding National Trust - Hardcastle Crags (10 minutes), home of the 19th-century Gibson Mill – along with wildlife including roe deer and woodpeckers. There are heaps of cycling paths around, too, so don’t forget to strap your mountain bike to the roof rack before leaving home. There’s a portable toilet on site, but not much else in the way of amenities: there is no running water, so each booking is provided with bottled drinking water. What you will also find is a warm welcome and plenty of peace and quiet to recharge your batteries.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I had a great stay here. The site was really peaceful and easy to get to. I had some tent trouble when I arrived and June was able to get a friend to help me out which was amazing. They also provided plenty of water and the portaloo was really clean. Everything was exactly as described and June was very easy to contact. Definitely recommend!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Fiona was extremely helpful. We were late arriving and she left us water in the shade. I contacted her to arrange another site visit and she was very accommodating. Very friendly would definitely recommend

Disliked: In the entrance of the gate, the Earth is raised slightly, and it scrapes underneath the vehicle

From the manager: Hi, Thank you for the lovely review. I'm sorry you had an issue with the gateway but we have addressed the problem and the entrance is now flat. Many Thanks June.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We loved our stay at Happy Valley Camping. The campsite had no running water (as is clearly stated in the site description) but June provided a large bottle each day for us which was all we needed. The portaloo was pristine with soap and water and paper towels provided. The site was perfect for our needs and June was extremely helpful. Proximity to Hebdon Bridge was fantastic. 5 mins in the car. Hebdon Bridge is very hilly we realised so we bottled out of walking into town. We will definitely be back. Great pub not too far away as well called the Hare and Hounds. Amazing pies and Sunday lunch!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Clean , well kept site in a beautiful location, close to Hebden Bridge. Good communication once booked and made to feel very welcome on arrival, plenty of space to pitch tents , not over crowded.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

Oxenhope (15 minutes’ drive) marks the starting point of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (KWVR), a five-mile heritage track with steam trains travelling through the Worth Valley. The KWVR is also known for its association with the 1970s film The Railway Children, which was filmed around these parts. Rainy day and the kids are getting restless? Take them to Halifax (25 minutes) and Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, where they can explore several themed interactive zones (including the human body and technology) or just get creative in the play areas. Stop for a bite to eat at Halifax Borough Market before visiting the 15th-century Minster. You’re close to Brontë Country here, and you can learn all about the famed writing sisters at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth (25 minutes), where exhibits include original furniture and assorted personal items. Then take a walk up to the Bronte Waterfall and sit on Charlotte’s Chair (said to be where the Jane Eyre author would come to seek inspiration).
